Zinnia eventually won the game, and she smiled from ear to ear
as she handed the cards back to him, a silent victory parade
glittering in her eyes. "Congrats, Z," he said with a smile, and
held his hand out to shake. "I would say 'beginner's luck', but
I know that wasn't it. You pick up on things fast."
She took his hand slowly, and he smiled even more broadly,
"Thanks." Then, she moved to stretch her back, and Reese shifted
his back, trying to get the kinks out after concentrating so
       hard on the game.
"Although, I wasn't operated on by the French scientists. Or
rather, I didn't get my enhancement here." Reese arched an
eyebrow at her, surprised at the sudden return in the
conversation, but interested, all the same. "My enhancements
were done in America, I think. Although one of the scientists
may have come from France, or a French speaking nation, I was
operated on in America." The sudden way she finished made him
wonder if she was done talking, or if she felt she'd said far
       too much.
"Well..." he said, taking a moment to sigh and sit back on the
bench. "It's good to meet someone who's not European, all the
same. Even if I've been here a good portion of my life, that
still doesn't change." He watched her for a moment, his face
contemplative before he added in a gentle voice, "Would you mind
if I look? I'm curious about any of the visible Enhancements
that others have. Since mine can't really be seen, you know?
       Most everyone else's is more...tangible, I guess...so seeing
others' makes mine seem a bit more real to me, in a weird way."
He smiled, "If not, that's totally cool. I can tell you about
       mine, too, if you like."

She took his hand slowly, and he smiled even more broadly,
"Thanks." She stretched her back, and saw Reese do the same out
of the corner of her eye.
"Although, I wasn't operated on by the French scientists. Or
rather, I didn't get my enhancement here." Reese arched an
eyebrow at her, but looked interested. "My enhancements were
done in America, I think. Although one of the scientists may
have come from France, or a French speaking nation, I was
operated on in America." She stopped talking, rather abruptly.
"Well..." he said, "It's good to meet someone who's not
European, all the same. Even if I've been here a good portion of
my life, that still doesn't change." He watched her for a
moment, before asking quietly, "Would you mind if I look? I'm
curious about any of the visible Enhancements that others have.
Since mine can't really be seen, you know? Most everyone else's
is more...tangible, I guess...so seeing others' makes mine seem
a bit more real to me, in a weird way." He smiled, "If not,
that's totally cool. I can tell you about mine, too, if you
       like."
Zinnia hesitated. While relieved he hadn't asked more about her
past, she did like her personal space. But Reese didn't seem
like someone who would violate her private space without her
permission, or do anything else like that.
She nodded after a few minutes. "Sure, why not? Just...be a bit
slow. I'm easily spooked and there's a weapon somewhere inside
of it that gets triggered." She sat down next to him and stuck
her arm out for him to see. "Also, if you'd like, you can take a
look at my left eye, which is technically part of it, but
there's not much left on the surface anymore."

       Reese Middleton
He decided to be a bit bolder, asking Zinnia if she would allow
him to look at her Enhancement. He knew how it felt to be
prodded and examined on a scientist's table, but he wanted this
to be different. This was one curious soul to another, two
people sizing each other up for the sake of knowing each other a
little better. He was just that - curious. Reese saw the
hesitation on Zinnia's face, and hoped she wasn't about to yank
back, insist that he was being weird about it all. But after a
few minutes of thought, she nodded. Reese tried not to beam, but
it was hard to hold back the surge of happiness that ran through
him. He wondered who had really won the game they'd been playing
       in the courtyard.
"Sure, why not? Just...be a bit slow. I'm easily spooked and
there's a weapon somewhere inside of it that gets triggered."
She sat down next to him and stuck her arm out for him to see.
It was a strangely constructed arm, looking similar in shape and
size to a human one, but looking stiffer, and more flexible, at
the same time. Reese gingerly reached forward and touched the
metal on her arm, feeling just the vague warmth and thrum of the
mechanics within. It was somewhere between the normal cool of
metal, and warm from the sunny, late-autumn day. As if slipping
his fingers into someone else's hand, he felt along the wire
which he figured was the edge of the gun, one hand underneath,
marveling at how light the material seemed. "Also, if you'd
like, you can take a look at my left eye, which is technically
part of it, but there's not much left on the surface anymore."
"Really?" he quite naturally glanced up to look at her eye, not
noticing much out of place. There were a handful of scars that
wrapped like webbing around her temple, and upon closer
inspection he could see thin wires that ran along the side of
her face. But her actual eye seemed as normal as could be. He
smiled. "You have very pretty eyes," he mentioned casually,
turning back to her arm nonchalantly. "And your arm is
well-done, too, I would say. I don't know much about mechanics,
but it looks like they knew what they were doing." He let go of
her arm, sending her a smile. "Okay, my turn now." He shifted so
that he was straddling the bench, held both his palms out in
front of him as though pressing at an invisible wall. "Nothin'
up my sleeve..." he teased, then, "Touch your hands to mine for
       just a minute."

"Sure, why not? Just...be a bit slow. I'm easily spooked and
there's a weapon somewhere inside of it that gets triggered."
She sat down next to him and stuck her arm out for him to see,
rolling the sleeve up past where her natural skin started
covering the metal. He gingerly ran both his hands across it,
almost a caress, and if she'd had nerves still she knew she
would have shivered. It was a light, careful touch, though, so
she eventually relaxed more. She did, however, feel him run his
hand up the wire that connected into the gun on one hand and her
brain in the other. "Also, if you'd like, you can take a look at
my left eye, which is technically part of it, but there's not
much left on the surface anymore."
"Really?" He glanced up to look at her eye but didn't seem to
find much out of the ordinary. She knew there were scars,
though, that gave away the fact that her eye wasn't normal, but
they weren't too obvious. He smiled after a few seconds, as
though she'd passed some test. She gave an answering smile. It
was nice to be able to trust someone else's judgement.
"You have very pretty eyes," he continued, then turned back to
her arm. "And your arm is well-done, too, I would say. I don't
know much about mechanics, but it looks like they knew what they
were doing." She didn't agree, albeit on a different part of
       her enhancement.
"Thanks." She felt her face warm just a touch. She'd had the
same reaction when Dox had said the same thing.
He let go of her arm, sending her a smile. "Okay, my turn now."
He shifted so that he straddled the bench, held both his palms
up, facing her. "Nothin' up my sleeve..." he teased, then,
"Touch your hands to mine for just a minute."
"Ok..." She touched her palms to his slowly, wondering what
effect her mechanical arm would have on his Enhancement...and
what his enhancement was to begin with.
       "Now what?"

       Reese Middleton
He looked up into her eyes, realizing the scars and little hints
of Enhancements that ran along her left temple. Left eye, right
arm. Connected. He could feel it in the hum that resonated in
the mechanical arm he held, like the booming of a concert that
shakes your very knees. But why were they connected? Either way,
it didn't really change much, did it? He smiled, and she smiled
back at him, as if they had a mutual understanding in that
moment. "You have very pretty eyes," he continued, then turned
back to her arm. "And your arm is well-done, too, I would say. I
don't know much about mechanics, but it looks like they knew
       what they were doing."
"Thanks." He was a bit amused at her little blossom of warmth.
He let go of her arm, sending her a smile. "Okay, my turn now."
He shifted so that he straddled the bench, held both his palms
up, facing her. "Nothin' up my sleeve..." he teased, then,
"Touch your hands to mine for just a minute."
"Ok..." He was pleased that she obeyed so willingly, touching
her hands to his. Instantly, he felt a surge of her emotion,
wordless in his mind, but as tangible as the earth the tips of
their shoes brushed against below, or the bench they shared.
       "Now what?"
"My parents said that I've always been very sympathetic to
others, ever since I was little. If someone else got hurt, I
cried with them, because I felt so sorry for them. That kind of
a thing. When I got my Enhancement, I basically got an upgrade
on that. I know other people may hate their Enhancements a lot,
and I know they can be really horrifying, but...I like mine,
because it doesn't feel like something shoved down my throat. It
feels like what it's named..and enhancement on what I already
had. Only, a bit more scientifically based." He smiled, their
hands were still held together. "Right now, I can feel the
humming of your mechanical arm, almost like it's a really noisy
old computer that whines in my head. In your left hand, I can
feel your pulse. Not like, I'm checking to see if you're alive
and I can feel it like a little tap-tap-tap, but I feel it
pumping in my own head, too. I can feel if your heart skips a
beat because your nervous, or if you're starting to get dizzy,
and that kind of thing. It's almost like empathy, in a way." He
tilted his head to the side a little, hoping she didn't
instantly get freaked out by such an idea. "Now, to clarify, I'm
       not a mind-reader. I can't tell what you're thinking about. It's
just that my people-studying radio has been turned up to full
blast, so sometimes I can figure out what's going on with other
people, even if they don't say anything. That's all."
He lowered his hands, watching her with soft eyes. "Technically
speaking, it's called Enhanced Synthesia at the moment, although
that suggests that I taste the color purple, when it's more like
I hear the sad." He held his palms up, shrugging. 'I think it's
pretty cool, but it's not very exciting, is it?"

didn't take his hands away, although her emotions were starting
to get stirred up. Mainly it was jealousy that he was at peace
with his enhancement, and himself. But he kept talking, so she
tried to forget her feelings and listened.

He tilted his head to the side a little. "Now, to clarify, I'm

"I think its plenty exciting." Her jealousy rose like a wave,
but she managed to tamp it down. Jealousy never did anything
productive anyway. "At least its easier to control than mine."

Reese gave another little shrug. "Well, each Enhancement has its
own ups and downs, am I right? I'm sure there are things about
your Enhancement that would make it seen as 'better' than mine,
if you look at it one way. For instance," he smirked, "Your
Enhancement doesn't make going to school on test day a
complicated situation. And it's not like I can shut mine off, so
it's always there. But you know what? It was because I wanted to
get out of the annoying buzzing in the classroom that I came out
here, and so I got to meet you. So I think the cards just fall
where ever they may, and I don't complain too much."
He stood up, stretching his arms and back above his head with a
little groan. "Welp...anyways. I should get going. I promise a
friend of mine I would meet him after class. You should come
hang out with us sometime. Anyway..." he sent he a smile as he
picked up his things, "It was really nice meeting you, Zinnia.
I'll see you around." He wandered out of the courtyard, feeling
as though his headache had somehow lightened. He had never
gotten that nap he had hoped for, but that was okay with him.

"I think its plenty exciting. At least its easier to control
than mine." Jealousy raged for a short while, but she ignored
it. It wasn't his fault he hadn't been so traumatized, and that
the scientists had built upon what he had already.
Reese gave another little shrug. "Well, each Enhancement has its
own ups and downs, am I right? I'm sure there are things about
your Enhancement that would make it seen as 'better' than mine,
if you look at it one way. For instance," he smirked, "Your

She nodded, knowing he was in the right. But she couldn't help
wishing that the scientists who had worked on her had been a
       little less cruel.
He stood up, stretching his arms and back above his head.
"Welp...anyways. I should get going. I promise a friend of mine
I would meet him after class. You should come hang out with us
sometime. Anyway..." he smiled back at her as he picked up his
things, "It was really nice meeting you, Zinnia. I'll see you
       around."
"It was nice to meet you too, Reese. See you around.. and have
fun with your friend." Surprisingly, she wasn't angry with him
picking up and leaving so suddenly.
He wandered out of the courtyard, looking content and at peace
with the world. Zinnia sighed, after he'd left, and leaned back
to let the sun fall on her face. She felt more at peace with the
world, now, and all she'd done is be honest with some random
       student at the school.
I should trust people to be good more often, she thought.
Especially if I feel so good afterwards...
Slowly, she relaxed, eventually falling asleep. When she woke
up, it was cold outside, and the sun had left the courtyard. She
jumped up and grabbed her bag, wondering how much time she had
lost. Glancing at her watch, she figured it had been about 3
hours since Reese had left. Softly cussing herself for falling
asleep, she made her way out of the courtyard and back to her
       small apartment.
       Zinnia has left the Courtyard.
