       Zinnia Natter
"It is pretty awkward, but you just kinda learn to deal with
awkward after a while. Sometimes he can bring me lunch, though,
and that's pretty nice... I'm a sucker for a good deli lunch."
Erin giggled. Zinnia smiled--it was sweet of her dad to bring
her lunch sometimes, even if it was awkward for Erin. "Who do
you know that would teach PE?"
"At least you and your dad seemed to have worked out things
       pretty well."
Erin shrugged. "Well... sorta-kinda-not really. I kinda just
learned to tolerate it. Like when you tolerate the heat when
your AC breaks. Who do you know who would teach PE, though?" she
asked again, curiosity piqued. She figured Zinnia just didn't
       hear her the first time.
""My... friend, that I've been staying with, in France, I mean,
he fences somewhat well. He'd probably make a better dance
instructor though. Haha..." her laugh was only half-hearted, and
faded pretty quickly. I would hate to have to lie to Erin...
she's so sweet... But I kind of have to also keep his name out
of the Academy. It wouldn't do well if he were to get sucked in.
He's perfectly fine in France... And she didn't want him here,
if there was a chance one of the scientists had worked with Hal.
She didn't want him to find out what she was hunting
specifically in revenge for. He might not forgive her for it,
even though he knew all her past.
"What's the best part of your enhancement? I mean, I know you
can breathe underwater, but... surely it has other benefits.
Right?" She shifted the topic into safer waters, and back to
       Erin.
"Well," Erin started, "It also really helps with breath support.
Since my whole respiratory system is enhanced, it's like I have
automatically enhanced breath support, too, which is the most
perfect thing for singing, and if I ever wanna pick up a brass
or woodwind instrument! Like, bringing ska back, guys...." She
mimed playing a trumpet, making jazzy sound effects as well.
       Zinnia laughed.
"That also makes my voice carry farther and I don't have to
strain it to be heard. Breath support also helps you reach your
full vocal range, so my higher notes are clearer and my lower
ones are stronger. so, yeah, besides the obvious mermaid
abilities, that's what it can do!"
"That's pretty cool." Zinnia let the conversation dwindle, out
of safe topics to talk about. She wasn't sure if she wanted to
share her dark past with Erin-she seemed to be in a very cheery
mood, and Zinnia didn't want to dampen her spirits. Something
       popped into her mind again.
"So, is there something going on between you and Yukito? I mean,
you've been a little touchy, lately, that's all... And, I mean,
you are here." She sort of blushed, not wanting to be rude but
also wanting an answer at the same time. "Not to be rude, or
pushy, or anything... It just seems like there might be, and I'd
rather have my facts straight from the source..." She blushed
fully now, knowing she'd dug herself into a hole if Erin took it
       the wrong way. "Sorry."

       Erin Spenser
"Who do you know who would teach PE, though?" Erin repeated, and
       this time Zinnia heard her.
""My... friend, that I've been staying with, in France, I mean,
he fences somewhat well. He'd probably make a better dance
       instructor though. Haha..."
"Awww, seriously? I can't even have a member of the male gender
in my bedroom at my house...." She couldn't help the pout in her
voice. It wasn't fair for so many limits to be set on her guy
friends like that. Plus, it felt stifling. How was she supposed
to stretch out her wings and do her own thing if she was so
       constantly restricted? It wasn't fair.
Zinnia shifted the topic to Erin's enhancement, which she
rambled about quite happily for a bit. Some people found it dull
or something to talk about their Enhancement, because it was
pretty much the norm in their circle of friends, but...
everyone's Enhancement was different, and most were pretty new,
so it still was an exciting topic for Erin.
They were getting pretty close to Yukito's house, Erin thought.
Despite having come in the dark and rain at a high speed, things
       felt a little familiar.
"So, is there something going on between you and Yukito? I mean,
you've been a little touchy, lately, that's all... And, I mean,
       you are here."
"Huh?" Erin looked at her, genuinely confused by the choice of
words. "Am I touchy?" She fiddled with a loose strand of her
hair, thinking back to the past couple of days. She couldn't
remember if she'd been extra sensitive, but then, Erin didn't
think she was the best judge of her own actions.
"Not to be rude, or pushy, or anything... It just seems like
there might be, and I'd rather have my facts straight from the
source..." Zinnia ended with another apology, probably because
of the still-confused look on Erin's face. How could she really
answer when she didn't even really know if there was 'something
       going on?'
So she shrugged, fingering the charm on her necklace nervously.
"I dunno.... I mean, I like him, and I would totally go out with
him if he wanted, but... he doesn't want to. So... there's
really nothing that could go on." Working her lips to hide the
disappointment she felt, Erin gave another shrug. "It's
whatever. I can at least help take care of his kitten while he's
gone, right?" She sent Zinnia a smile, hoping she'd let it be
and accept that Erin was okay with it. Even if she really
       wasn't.

       Zinnia Natter
"My... friend, that I've been staying with, in France, I mean,
he fences somewhat well. He'd probably make a better dance
       instructor though. Haha..."
"Awww, seriously? I can't even have a member of the male gender
in my bedroom at my house...." Zinnia looked at Erin, new
thoughts swirling through her head, wondering at just what she
had missed out on while growing up unconscious for the better
       part of her teen years.
"Oh, goodness, it's not like that! He's just.. I mean, he took
me in and told me I could stay in the loft above the fencing
practice place thingy. He lives in a totally separate part of
town, I've never been there. Trying to respect his privacy and
all..." Truth was she didn't even know what part of town Dox
really lived in, but he certainly didn't spend enough time in
the loft after hours to live nearby, or maybe it was just a
change, to give her more privacy. Either way, she really needed
to pass the French Citizenship test soon, so she could start
applying for jobs so she could pay rent or at least buy
groceries for the loft, so Dox could stop worrying about her
       being fed.
Zinnia shifted the topic to Erin's enhancement, which she
rambled about quite happily for a bit, and then quieted down.
Zinnia's thoughts returned to her earlier question, and with the
house nearing, she asked it, a little louder this time.
"So, is there something going on between you and Yukito? I mean,
you've been a little touchy, lately, that's all... And, I mean,
       you are here."
"Huh?" Erin looked at her, confused. "Am I touchy?" She fiddled

"Not to be rude, or pushy, or anything... It just seems like
there might be, and I'd rather have my facts straight from the
source..." Zinnia ended with another apology, really not wanting
to hurt Erin's feelings, but at the same time kind of wanting an
       answer.
Erin shrugged, fiddling with her jewelry. "I dunno.... I mean, I
like him, and I would totally go out with him if he wanted,
but... he doesn't want to. So... there's really nothing that
could go on." Erin shrugged again, face working, but Zinnia
wasn't sure if it was to conceal her feelings or if Erin really
was unsure. "It's whatever. I can at least help take care of his
kitten while he's gone, right?" Erin smiled at Zinnia, and she
nodded, feeling Erin probably didn't want to discuss it any
       further.
"Yep!" She smiled back, hiding her thoughts on the subject and
turning the last corner to the house. "I think it's that one
there..." she said, pointing to the one on the far corner of the
block they were heading down. "Let's just poke our heads in and
make sure Mae-chan is ok and that she's got plenty of food and
water, right? Then we can head back."

big deal out of something that wasn't even a thing to begin
with. "It's whatever. I can at least help take care of his
       kitten while he's gone, right?"
"Yep!" Zinnia replied, then pointed to a place down the road
just a bit. "I think it's that one there..."
"Oh, yeah, it is!" Erin chirped, picking up her pace. She wasn't
sure what her hurry was-- it's not like he was even there.
"Let's just poke our heads in and make sure Mae-chan is ok and
that she's got plenty of food and water, right? Then we can head
       back."
Erin shrugged. "All right." She walked around the fence and into
the side where she knew Yukito's window was. "Doesn't she
usually hang around his window?" Erin looked around.
"Mae-chan.... come here!" She made little clicking sounds with
her tongue to try and draw attention. "Do you see her food and
       water bowls anywhere?"

Zinnia pointed to a place down the road just a bit. "I think
       it's that one there..."
"Oh, yeah, it is!" Erin chirped, picking up her pace. Zinnia
smiled to herself-- Erin was always willing to care for others,
even if she didn't have much of a reason to.
"Let's just poke our heads in and make sure Mae-chan is ok and
that she's got plenty of food and water, right? Then we can head
back." She didn't want to leave any evidence that they'd been
       there.
Erin shrugged. "All right." She walked around the fence, clearly
knowing where she was headed. "Doesn't she usually hang around
his window?" Erin looked around. "Mae-chan.... come here!" She
made little clicking sounds with her tongue, calling the cat.
"Do you see her food and water bowls anywhere?"
Zinnia spotted the edge of something plastic and round poking
out from a cover of bent-over grass, and pushed the grass away,
tearing some of it out in her effort to keep the food uncovered.
"Here it is. I think the water bowl has been filled with
rainwater, but that's better than nothing anyway." She stood
back up, looking around for the cat, wondering if it would be ok
for the rest of the week.
"I think the cat will be fine, though, Erin, no matter what."
She sent a smile to the girl, and then continued looking around
for the cat, slowly turning around, not wanting to scare the cat
off unnecessarily. "After all, the cat DID start as a stray, and
they can usually take care of themselves. Although it would be
nice to see Mae-chan." She hoped they hadn't scared her off.

"Mae-chan.... come here!" She made little clicking sounds with
her tongue, calling the cat. "Do you see her food and water
       bowls anywhere?" she asked Zinnia.
Zinnia walked over to something in the grass, which, thankfully,
turned out to be the bowls. It was kind of obvious now, Erin
realized. "Here it is. I think the water bowl has been filled
with rainwater, but that's better than nothing anyway."
"It's not dirty or anything, though, right? We can get some
clean water out of the house spigot if we need to." Concerned,
Erin peered into the cat's water dish. It did look clean, except
for a few stray blades of grass, which she plucked out. "And she
has enough food, you think? Yukito never told me where he kept
her food, or how he fed her... I mean, I can go get her
something from my house and bring it back for her. You know,
       some tuna or something."
"I think the cat will be fine, though, Erin, no matter what."
Zinnia sent her a smile before turning around to look again for
       Mae-chan.
"You sure?" Erin asked, genuinely worried. Ideally, she'd take
Mae-chan home with her, and they could play and cuddle and the
cat could sleep at the foot of her bed. But she knew that wasn't
going to happen. Plus, Mae-chan wasn't hers to keep.
"After all, the cat DID start as a stray, and they can usually
take care of themselves. Although it would be nice to see
       Mae-chan."
Erin's face fell into a little pout. "Yeah, she looked so cute
in the pictures, and Yukito made her sound really sweet... I
wanted to meet her and play with her some." She sighed. "Oh,
well... Thanks for letting me come with you, anyway." It was her
turn to offer Zinnia a smile.
