"Awesome, two questions down already, plus a bonus. Now..what do
you dream about most often?" He turned his head toward her,
resting his chin in the palm of his hand, his elbow propped up
on the table and grinned. "Something like, 'Reese's beautiful
eyes', or 'being a mermaid' or 'coming to school in my
underwear'?"
He had accomplished his goal of making Erin burst out with that
warm, comforting laughter of hers. "Reese! What the crap?!" She
tried to cover up her giggles, but there was no way to contain
Erin when she was amused, and he had to laugh, too, to hear her.
"Omigod, I do not dream about underwear!"
Reese shrugged, as if it was an easy mistake to make, "Hey, I'm
not one to judge! How am I supposed to know? Okay, okay..enough
goofing around. I promise I'm done." He smiled, though, clearly
not done making her smile. He was still beaming ear to ear when
she continued.
"I don't have a lot of recurring dreams. At least, not any that
I remember. Hmm... the only things I remember dreaming about
more than once is a dream where no one came to our concerts, and
another where I basically just have a really bad day at school."
She gave a laugh, the idea obviously bothering her, so she
pushed it off as a mere annoyance. "Y'know, why do only bad
dreams become the recurring ones? Do you have any happy
recurring dreams? Please tell me yes!"
He took a moment to consider, his eyebrow raising up and down in
a playful ponder. "Hmm...Well, I can't say it's a happy
recurring dream, but sometimes even in my bad dreams, there is
pie. I think that can be considered a good thing. Like, once I
dreamt I was Batman, and I had broken my leg, and suddenly there
were all these cops chasing me. But I managed to get to the
Batmobile, and there was pie inside. That was pretty sweet. It
was like my subconscious was saying 'Yo, I get that you're
having a bad time of it. So here's some pie', and it'll just be
randomly spread out in my dreams." He paused a moment for
dramatic effect, then added, "Or maybe I shouldn't eat right
before going to sleep."

"Omigod, I do not dream about underwear!" She couldn't help
cracking up at the implication.
Reese just shrugged. "Hey, I'm not one to judge! How am I
supposed to know? Okay, okay..enough goofing around. I promise
I'm done."
"You are not," Erin retorted, still grinning. "I call
shenanigans!" She moved right into the dream thing, rattling off
the only ones she could think of. "Y'know," she asked, her
thoughts jumping. "Why do only bad dreams become the recurring
ones? Do you have any happy recurring dreams? Please tell me
yes!"
Reese seemed to seriously consider this. Without thinking about
it, Erin started poking things with the eraser on her pencil as
Reese pondered. "Hmm...Well, I can't say it's a happy recurring
dream, but sometimes even in my bad dreams, there is pie. I
think that can be considered a good thing. Like, once I dreamt I

subconscious was saying 'Yo, I get that you're having a bad time

out in my dreams." Reese paused, and Erin was trying desperately
not to burst out into laughter. But then, he added, "Or maybe I
shouldn't eat right before going to sleep."
At that, she lost it. "Okay, I have to write that!" Erin mimed
writing in the air: "'Reese has an obsession with pie. Probably
made by Erin, since hers is the best. He dreams about it every
night. His favorite is pumpkin.' Oh, wait, that's mine..."
Finally, she was able to catch her breath. "You know, really,
the pie's probably symbolic of something, like how you're always
an optimist... waiting for the good thing to come out of the
bad. But you have to go through the bad thing to get there
first." She shrugged and wrote down, "Usually has pie appearing
in bad dreams.... like a sign of hope inside darkness!!!!!" The
last exclamation point was just a bit too dramatic, because
Erin's pencil lead snapped off. "Ah!" The sudden sound made Erin
jump a bit, and she gave the stink eye to her severed pencil.
"Well. Guess this means I can't write anymore. I just have to
listen to your stories then." She sent him a playful smile.
"Tell me, what's the cah-raaaayziest thing you've ever done? And
make it good." She put on a serious face and pointed at Reese.
"This goes on record."

He made up half the story, but that was okay. He had experienced
a randomly appearing pie in his dreams, although it wasn't as
often as he would have liked. "Or maybe I shouldn't eat right
before going to sleep," he finished, smiling. Erin completely
lost it, bursting out laughing so loudly that the doctor outside
must have heard it.
"Okay, I have to write that!" Erin mimed writing in the air:
"'Reese has an obsession with pie. Probably made by Erin, since

added the last exclamation point with a dramatic flourish, her
pencil lead broke, making Reese snort with laughter. "Ah!" She
held up her pencil, sending it an adorable little glare, her
round lips pouted in distaste. "Well. Guess this means I can't
write anymore. I just have to listen to your stories then." She
sent him a playful smile.
"Well, I guess so!"
"Tell me, what's the cah-raaaayziest thing you've ever done? And
make it good." She put on a serious face and pointed at Reese.
"This goes on record."
"The cah-raaaaayziest thing?" he echoed, sitting back and
placing a hand on his chin as he pondered. "Hmm...once, I was
hanging out at a bar with some friends, and this was last year,
so I was only like, 16 at the time. I ran out of money, so I
noticed this police officer sitting on the end of the bar. I was
just chatting it up with him, chilling out, you know...and he
ended up buying me a drink!" He laughed, "I couldn't believe it
afterwards...it was probably the stupidest thing I've ever done,
too...haha.." He looked over at Erin, "Now what about you?"

"The cah-raaaaayziest thing?" Reese echoed, making Erin giggle
at herself. Did she really sound like that? He leaned back in
his chair and made like he was really pondering the
question."Hmm...once, I was hanging out at a bar with some

she joined him in her own cackling. "I couldn't believe it

"Ha, no! I think--" she paused through her fit of laughter to
repeat herself. "--I think that was the craziest thing that
police officer did! Did he know you were, like, 16?! Oh my
god.... that could be really, really whacked out, Reese..." She
shook her head, still giggling, but now trying to cover it up
with her hand.
"Now what about you?" asked Reese, making her laughter dwindle
into nothing.
"Hmm.... It's hard to do anything super crazy when you're
watched like a hawk." Erin made a face. "Hmm... okay, so I will
just tell you some stuff, and you can tell me which you wanna
use! Okay, so once, before this school, at my old school I was
on the bus, right? Then this really hot guy sat down next to me
and I was like, 'holy crap,' so I texted my friend Celeste about
him, and she was all, 'oh-em-gee, send a pic!' So I went to
sneak a picture, right, and the flash on my camera went off
right-- in-- his-- face!
"And another time, there was this guy I liked and somehow I
figured out his locker combination...I don't even know, but my
friend and I thought it would be cool to, like, open up his
locker while he was absent and see what all was in there. Okay,
so we do it, and we find stuff like his clothes in there, and
then my friend was all, 'Dude, I dare you to put his shirt on,'
so I was like, 'okay,' and so I did, and when I walked around
the corner, his brother was there and took a picture and called
my crush and sent it to him!" Erin mimed choking on her own
embarrassment. "Yeah, I didn't exactly steal his heart there.
And I won't be doing that again." With wide eyes, she fervently
shook her head.
"And, okay, last one-- I promise! Last summer, before school
started, you know that blue house down the street from me? Well,
they threw out this big, old chair. It looked pretty good, and
it was just sitting there on the side of the road, so me and my
friend Jonathan went over and sat in it. It was sooo soft and
squishy and perfect, I still have no idea why they were throwing
it out. But whatever, we decided to carry it down back to that
little corner market down the other way and we set it in the
parking lot and sat in it and played music for people driving in
and out of the parking lot. Then we decided I could use it in my
bedroom so we walked it back to my house, but on the way, this
police car came by and the policeman was all, 'What are you
doing with that fluffy, squishy chair?'" Erin made her voice
extra-deep and exaggerated for that part. "And we were all,
'Just carrying it into the house,' and he was all, 'Awesome.
Carry on.' And he drove off. But my dad didn't let me keep the
chair because he said it was stealing, even though I told him
they were throwing it away. So..." she sighed. "We had to go
put it right back where we got it from.
"Anyway! Those are my stories! Nothing super exciting, but...."
Erin shrugged, letting the sentence trail off. She'd like to do
exciting things.... wild things, goofy things. But it felt like
pulling teeth to get any chances!

In response to his story about the craziest thing he'd ever
done, Erin was having a hard time controlling her laughter.
Reese joined her in her mirth, still not believing that he'd
gotten away with it himself. "Ha, no! I think--" she paused
through her fit of laughter to repeat herself. "--I think that
was the craziest thing that police officer did! Did he know you
were, like, 16?! Oh my god.... that could be really, really

now trying to cover it up with her hand.
"Well, it's not something I do that often, really," he
clarified, not wanting her to get the wrong idea. "But it was
freaking hilarious! Now what about you?" asked Reese, making her
laughter dwindle into nothing.
"Hmm.... It's hard to do anything super crazy when you're
watched like a hawk." Erin made a face. Reese nodded,
understanding that sentiment. "Hmm... okay, so I will just tell
you some stuff, and you can tell me which you wanna use! Okay,
so once, before this school, at my old school I was on the bus,
right? Then this really hot guy sat down next to me and I was

Reese let out a burst of laughter at that, shaking his head. Of
course Erin would forget about the flash. He wondered what the
guy had looked like, and what he'd done after noticing that he
was having his picture taken.
"And another time, there was this guy I liked and somehow I
figured out his locker combination...I don't even know, but my
friend and I thought it would be cool to, like, open up his
locker while he was absent and see what all was in there. Okay,

so I was like, 'okay,' and so I did, and when I walked around
the corner, his brother was there and took a picture and called
my crush and sent it to him!"
"Oooooh.." Reese let out a hiss, pained at the unfortunate turn
of events there. He imagined Erin wearing some guy's huge shirt,
practically swimming in it, arms and brown eyes wide.
Erin mimed choking on her own embarrassment. "Yeah, I didn't
exactly steal his heart there. And I won't be doing that again."
She shook her head, and Reese couldn't resist another laugh.
"Wow, Erin. I didn't take you for that kind of girl..." he was
obviously teasing, and he leaned down on the desk, beginning to
gnaw on the side of his pencil while watching her with a smile,
waiting for the next story.
"And, okay, last one-- I promise! Last summer, before school
started, you know that blue house down the street from me? Well,

sounding so disappointed in herself. Reese watched her face,
with the thick pink lips that pouted at any opportunity, and the
long, dark eyelashes. He smiled at her for a moment, letting out
a sigh, rolling his eyes.
"You're ridiculous, Erin. You have plenty of good stories. But I
think the sofa one was my favorite." Partially because it didn't
involve another guy in a romantic way, he had to admit. He moved
to write the story down briefly, then picked up the paper and
looked at the fifth question more closely, "Okaaay...Combo
number five. What are five things you want more of right now?
They can be physical, characteristics, yadda yadda..."

She tossed out a few stories... sure, they were funny, but
nothing that was really crazy. Sometimes it felt like there was
such a tight reign on her, that she couldn't have pulled off
anything good no matter how hard she might try. Even just the
dye in her hair had to be temporary, or fake extensions. So, as
much as Erin wanted to have a cool, wild story about something
she did... there was nothing. Just lame, dumb kids' stuff. But
she told Reese anyway, because... why not? At least he wouldn't
judge her for it, and he actually seemed to enjoy it. But
still... she wanted to do things! "Anyway!" Erin ended her
tales. "Those are my stories! Nothing super exciting, but...."
She shrugged, her words trailing off.
"You're ridiculous, Erin," Reese commented, rolling his eyes.
Erin's face shifted into a look of incredulity. What was he
talking about? "You have plenty of good stories. But I think the
sofa one was my favorite."
She had to laugh at that. "Why? It's so dumb! I can't actually
do anything exciting, so I just have to make do with whatever
entertainment I can create myself." It was her turn to roll her
eyes, though she sent him a smile. She didn't want Reese to
think she was actually being too serious about it all.
"Okaaay...Combo number five. What are five things you want more
of right now? They can be physical, characteristics, yadda
yadda..."
Still playing with the broken pencil, Erin poked her cheek with
the eraser's end the entire time she was thinking about it.
"Hmm.... I wa-aant... more oooof.... those cranberry scones you
can get in the cafeteria during breakfast, omigod yes! And I
want moooore...hours in a day. For sleeping and music purposes,
obviously." She gestured with her hand as if to say, "Okay, hand
over the extra hours now!" "And, hmm.... three... I want
more.... I want more of my friends. Just that." She sent him a
grin. "Four.... I want more.... money! I keep spending all of
mine on music and clothes and food... And Fiiiive...." Erin gave
up on the eraser and started tapping out a rhythm with the
pencil on the table's edge. "I want more.... understanding."
Quickly, she snapped the pencil in two and began using them as
very tiny drumsticks to beat out a drumroll on the table beside
her. "Ding! Done!"
She turned to him, saying brightly, "Okay, tell me yours!"

"Just because it's not bungee jumping doesn't mean it can't be

She prodded at her cheek with her eraser, looking like a four

"Okay, tell me yours!"
He stopped and thought about it, resting his chin in his palm.
"Hmm...money, but mine is mostly for food and video games.. Two,
I want to get an awesome career for my life. Three, I want a
cure for all cancers. Four, I want a really nice set of noise

smirked, sitting back in his seat. A knock came on the door
then, and a head poked its way into the room.
"You've got about five minutes left."
Reese turned to look at her, a smile still on his face. "Or
maybe just more time. But we're mostly done anyways." He sat up
straighter in his desk, noting with some surprise, "We were

She shrugged. "Well, you know, like you, and how you can

went a lot deeper than that, but it was too much to talk about,

thumbs up, unable to stop grinning. "You can totally get a

She grinned at him knowingly.
"You've got about five minutes left."
The administrator's voice startled her, and Erin jumped a

"Wait, you wanna choose between more time and having a

He sat up straighter in his desk, noting with some surprise, "We

Erin hopped up from her seat, lifting her hand to give Reese a
high five. "We're just that awesome together! Good teamwork,
