Room 308: Erin Spenser/Reese Middleton

Date: April 14, 2013, 11:30 am
---------------------------------------------------------
The doctor wore a white lab coat and a smile that never quite
seemed to reach to his eyes. But perhaps that was because he
seemed to have little quirks and twitches of his own,
ceaselessly toying with the edge of his coat or
tap-tap-tapping the clipboard in his hand. He was
middle-aged, with short, brown hair and very nondescript eyes.
"Soooo...did you two know each other before you got roped into
this?" He sent them a smile. "Not that it changes anything,
you'll still be paired up. I'm just curious. I don't like
questionnaires myself, so it seems like it would be easier to
fill out with a friend." He unlocked the lab room, the plethora
of keys jingling in his hands. "I just have to warn you that you
are not allowed to use any of the computers, because we feel it
would distract from the questionnaire, and you would probably
run out of time. So please, leave them be. Now, for the actual
questions... on this line, you'll write your own name, and on
this line, write the name of your partner. You ask her
questions, and she'll ask you. Write your partner's answers on
your questionnaire. Understood?" He placed the clipboard between
two computers, setting a pencil in front of each of the chairs.
"Try to get through all of them, but certainly don't rush
through too much. If you need anything, I'll be right outside
that door, so just knock. I'll come and let you know when the
hour is up." He smiled, clasping his hands together with a
little pat sound. "Okay, then. I will see you two in an hour!"
With that, he went to the door, closing it shut and locking it
soundly, the distant sound of his keys fading away.
~~
The computer lab is fairly well-sized, but a little cold. There
are a couple well cushioned rolling office chairs in the corner,
but most of the students are currently making do with plastic
chairs, until the budget allows for the proper upgrades. Part of
this reason is that this lab room is quite rarely used, and is
mostly open for students who want a little quiet study time when
everywhere else is full. The computers themselves are a bit
outdated, and all of them have been turned off for the time
being. There are also white-boards and a set up for a
powerpoint, but these are rarely used, and very old. There is a
marker next to the white-board, but it doesn't write very well.
In the corner sits a trashcan with some discarded soda cans in
it.
Each character takes turns posting, and the characters' goal is
to finish the questionnaire in the hour they are left in the
room together. Your character cannot leave, without explicit
permission. I will let you know when about an hour has passed in
character-time, so don't worry. Cause drama, dig deeply into
each other's character, and have fun!
Here are the first five questions on the questionnaire:
1. Describe yourself in five words.
2. How has your Enhancement changed the way you see yourself and
others?
3. What do you dream about most often?
4. What’s the craziest thing you’ve ever done?
5. What are 5 things you want more of right now? (Could be
physical things, characteristics, ideas, anything.)
NOTE: NPC comments and such will be added by me (message if
otherwise needed). My NPC will come in and inform the students
when their time is up.

know the hour won't be crappy.... Actually..." She looked over
the questions and gave a laugh. "These look kinda fun. Kinda
like those online asks. Except I have no idea how most of these
relate to Enhancements..." She cocked her eyebrows, sending an
amused glance Reese's way. "Like, really."
She sat down in one of the computer chairs and turned sideways
in it, twirling the pencil in her right hand. "Okay, so give me
five things that describe you."

Reese Middleton
He had to admit, he was kind of proud of his luck for ending up
with Erin for the hour. Seriously, it could have been much, much
worse. At this point, he wasn't sure if there was anyone else he
would have rather spent and hour with, chatting and getting to
know each other a little more. Sure, they had known each other
for ages, but this was probably the first time Reese had had the
opportunity to just sit and talk, just him and Erin. He scrawled
his name and Erin's across the paper, using her full name, as
Yukito had the other day. Erin Chloe Spenser.
"Well, he is right... at least we know each other. So we know
the hour won't be crappy.... Actually..." She looked over the
questions and gave a laugh. Even if the questions were the most
boring on the planet, Reese believed she would have found some
amusement in them. "These look kinda fun. Kinda like those
online asks. Except I have no idea how most of these relate to
Enhancements..." Arching one eyebrow, she looked over at him,
her big, brown eyes sparkling with amusement. "Like, really."
He took a glance at them himself, smiling. "Wow..it's just like
getting an anonymous ask. Nice. This won't be so bad, then, will
it?"
She sat down in one of the computer chairs and turned sideways
in it, twirling the pencil in her right hand. It seemed like she
was always moving around, fidgeting or twitching. Over the
weekend, Erin had gone through a pretty rough time of it, with
Yukito exploding in anger on them all. It was hard to tell what
her feelings on that, were. Erin seemed like the type who could
only bury her hurt under a layer of laughter and silliness.
Reese slowly turned toward her in his own chair. "Okay, so give
me five things that describe you."
Reese grinned, resting his chin in his palm.
"Hmm...'Fun-loving', which is totally one word 'Empathetic',
'Calm', and....hm.. 'At Peace'. Makes me sound like a Buddha or
something, doesn't it? Hahaha.. Okay, your turn. What's five
words to describe Erin?"

at him, her big, brown eyes sparkling with amusement. "Like,

Reese glanced at his own copy, which probably looked just like
Erin's, but with tinier, neater handwriting. "Wow..it's just
like getting an anonymous ask. Nice. This won't be so bad, then,
will it?"
"Nah," she said, sitting down sideways in one of the chairs.
"But if you tell them I said that, we're gonna have a fight."
She couldn't hold the fake-serious face for very much long,
quickly breaking into a giggle. Impulsively, Erin twirled the
pencil in her hand as she read the first question aloud. "Okay,
so give me five things that describe you."
Reese grinned, resting his chin in his palm.

words to describe Erin?"
Erin wrote the words in bullet points, putting little stars as
the actual bullets. "Fun-loving... totes one word." She nodded,
lips pursed. "Empathetic.... how the heck do you spell that?"
She looked up and sent him a playful smirk. "At peace is so not
even one word.... way to be a rebel Buddha. Though, technically,
I guess the original was a rebel... sort of... a peaceful
one...." She wrinkled her brow in thought, then waved it away
with her free hand. "Whatever. Anyway. Let's see...." She read
back through the short list, mouthing the words to herself.
"Yeah, that sounds like you. You may pass to the next level...
Oh, oh wait... my questions!"
Putting the paper and pencil down, she wrapped her knees close
to herself, hands feeling the ridges in her jeans. "Hmmm....
five words for me... um... Loud." She burst out into laughs,
only confirming her own adjective. "No, seriously, write that!
And.... hmm...." As she thought, Erin shifted from side to side,
like a little current of the ocean was shoving her this way and
that. "Outgoing.... musical.... hungry...No, don't put that one!
But I do want food... they should've given us free food. How
many left? Oh, how about musical.... and.... devoted." She gave
a nod. "What do you think?"

He watched her twirl the pencil in her hand playfully, "Okay, so
give me five things that describe you."
Reese grinned, resting his chin in his palm.
"Hmm...'Fun-loving', which is totally one word 'Empathetic',

She wrote down his answers with a flourish, and he leaned over
to watch her little bullet-art. "Fun-loving... totes one word."
She nodded, and he looked up into her face to see her thick,
pink lips pressed into a little pout. He smiled. "Empathetic....
how the heck do you spell that?" She looked up, smiling from ear
to ear. He had barely heard what she'd just said, but he tried
to focus. "At peace is so not even one word.... way to be a
rebel Buddha. Though, technically, I guess the original was a
rebel... sort of... a peaceful one...."
"But it's still five words," he grinned, holding up his hand,
all five fingers held aloft, and bent them each at the knuckle
momentarily as he listed them, "Fun-loving. Empathetic. Calm.
At. Peace." He laughed, but she just wrinkled her face and waved
her hand at him dismissively.
"Whatever. Anyway. Let's see...." She read back through the
short list, mouthing the words to herself. "Yeah, that sounds
like you. You may pass to the next level... Oh, oh wait... my
questions!"
He took a moment to pump the air in victory with one fist,
saying, "Level up!" Before pulling out his pencil and looking at
her expectantly for her answers.
Putting the paper and pencil down, she wrapped her knees close
to herself, hands feeling the ridges in her jeans. "Hmmm....
five words for me... um... Loud." They both laughed at that.
"No, seriously, write that!"
"Okay, that's pretty true.." He scrawled the word Loud in his
chicken-scratch hand-writing.
"And.... hmm...." Reese scratched his knee while Erin wriggled
back and forth in her seat, incapable of sitting still for a
moment while she was trying to think. "Outgoing.... musical....
hungry...No, don't put that one! But I do want food... they
should've given us free food. How many left? Oh, how about
musical.... and.... devoted." She gave a nod. "What do you
think?"
He finished and glanced up what he had written. "Loud, outgoing,
musical, devoted. That's four. You still have one more word! How
about 'beautiful'?" he suggested, not looking over at her, but
placing his pencil tip on the paper and waiting for her to agree
or disagree. After a moment he lifted his face to hers, sending
her a smile. "Well, it's true, you know."
Reese gave a little shrug, feigning nonchalance. "I hope that's
not weird to say...even with what's going on between you and
Yukito."

that. "No, seriously, write that!"
"Okay, that's pretty true.."
"Duh." Erin spread her hands in an "isn't it obvious?" gesture.
"And.... hmm.... Outgoing.... musical.... hungry...No, don't put

"Oh, crap, I totally said the same one twice!" In a burst of
laughter, she bumped her forehead with the heel of her palm.
"Wow, way to suck at counting."
"How about 'beautiful'?"
Immediately, Erin's face shifted into one of incredulity, her
eyebrows arching. She'd thought it was pretty apparent that they
weren't expected to write about physical traits, but
characteristics... Or was she just making that up? Yeah... she
could be making that up... "Can you do that?"
"Well, it's true, you know." He sent her a smile.
It was kinda weird hearing someone else call her beautiful so
nonchalantly-- at least someone who wasn't romantically involved
with her or was a family member, anyway. Boyfriends and parents
said that, and sometimes fans who probably wished they were
romantically involved with her, but it wasn't ever something she
expected. Nice, but unexpected. And it's not that she didn't
think about that of herself. Sure, she thought her face was too
round and childish sometimes, and she thought her hips were a
little too good for bearing children...
She brushed it off. "D'you think they'd accept that, though?"
Reese gave a little shrug. "I hope that's not weird to
say...even with what's going on between you and Yukito."
That made Erin scoff, her incredulity reaching a new level.
"Yeah, I don't think there's anything going on there. No worries
about that." A pout formed on her lips, despite Erin's best
efforts to avoid it... she couldn't be happy when it was
apparently evident to everyone else that her stupid attempt at a
relationship crashed and burned. And all because she'd tried to
make him feel better...

"Oh, crap, I totally said the same one twice!" In a burst of
laughter, she bumped her forehead with the heel of her palm.
"Wow, way to suck at counting."
"How about 'beautiful'?" he suggested, his pencil on the paper,
waiting for her to approve or disapprove it. It was supposed to
be her responses, after all. He felt a change in the mood, so he
looked over to see her sending him an incredulous expression.
"Can you do that?"
"Well, it's true, you know." He sent her a smile.
She brushed it off, more concerned with technicalities than
anything. Her eyes reflected a little confusion, however, and he
suspected it wasn' t just on the rules of the survey. "D'you
think they'd accept that, though?"
"I don't see why not, as long as it describes 'Erin', I think it
goes." Reese gave a little shrug, gauging her, then added, "I
hope that's not weird to say...even with what's going on between
you and Yukito."
That caused Erin to scoff. Reese sensed a tension in her that
tightened the air in the room, and he feared that he should have
avoided mentioning Yukito's name. But I haven't had a chance to
talk to her.. really talk to her, with just the two of us...I
need to know. Erin made it obvious her feelings for Yukito.
Whether or not Yukito realized the depth of those feelings,
Reese had a hard time answering. When it came to Erin, Yukito
was deliberately misleading, going back and forth between warm
reception, unsure reciprocation, and a cold, cruel shoulder of
obliviousness. Erin, however, hadn't strayed one bit from her
extra attentions on Yukito. No, she wasn't neglectful of others,
or stalkerish, by any means. It was just obvious to Reese that
she lit up more than usual when Yukito entered a room, and
enjoyed his company in a way that she didn't enjoy with Reese.
But has anything been decided? he wondered, not sure what to
hope for.
"Yeah, I don't think there's anything going on there. No worries
about that." Her thick lips formed a cute pout, and Reese
couldn't feel genuinely happy to know that Erin was losing hope.
He didn't want her to be sad or down-hearted, but could he
really support them both? He was torn in a way he'd never been
before. One of those times I have to be extra-careful of my
Enhancement, right? Damn..
"Yukito is horrible at relationships with anyone, isn't he?"
Reese let out a half-amused snort, sitting back in his chair.
"But didn't you guys have a good time during your movie-night?"
He had picked up enough from Yukito to know it had gone well,
and that he and Erin had decided not to tell everyone about just
what went on, but he had little details. "What did you think of
his house? I never felt comfortable there. I had a sneaking
suspicion that Dr. Ramsey had video cameras in all the walls.."
His expression showed amusement, but the feeling was sincere.
He looked down at his paper again, keeping himself from doodling
on the edges by re-tracing their names at the top of the page.
"Well, one of the things I don't like about Yukito is his
indecisiveness. He never sticks with what he says he going to
do, and he has this aversion to being straight with people. Me,
I think life is too short to spend it all in limbo. So..." he
lifted one shoulder in a little shrug, smiling to himself. "If
nothing is really going on there, I was wondering if you and I
could go out sometime, to a movie or something." Reese lifted
his face to hers after a moment, "If not, that's alright.
Just...think about it."
"But anyways," he sighed, transitioning topics before she had a
chance to reply, "The next question is, 'How has your
Enhancement changed the way you see yourself and others?'
For me...hm...I guess since I already liked to study people
anyways, it hasn't changed it a whole lot. When I first got my
Enhancement was the worst, though. I felt like everyone assumed
I was judging them, analyzing them like a piece of equipment or
something, when I really wasn't. I don't like to use my
Enhancement to 'get an edge' on people, I just use it to
understand them better." He gave a smirk, lifting his shoulders
in a nonchalant gesture. "I guess I see myself as an ambassador
of sorts. A mediator, maybe. Now...your turn."

Erin Spenser
"Yeah, I don't think there's anything going on there. No worries
about that." It seemed impossible to understand how he felt...
He'd made it really clear that he at least liked her. But Yukito
could turn so cold so fast... and Erin couldn't pin that on any
particular thing. It confused her... it felt like he was saying
sometimes, "I changed my mind," or "I didn't really mean it."
For the first time, Erin understood and might actually have
appreciated the "Hot and Cold" song that still floated around
the radio now and then. It definitely felt that way.... one
minute they were sharing a sweet moment, the next he'd be giving
her the cold shoulder....
"Yukito is horrible at relationships with anyone, isn't he?"
Reese let out a half-amused snort, sitting back in his chair.
But Erin's frown deepened a bit at the harsh labeling. "Don't
call him horrible..."
"But didn't you guys have a good time during your movie-night?"
Slowly, her smile inched its way back onto her face. "Yeah... it
was good." Then, she gave a hesitant pause. "But... he's really,
really hard for me to read... I mean, most people are hard to
read, but he's extra-hard... and sometimes I don't think he
wants to be around me as much as I think he does, if that makes
any sense..."
"What did you think of his house? I never felt comfortable
there. I had a sneaking suspicion that Dr. Ramsey had video
cameras in all the walls.."
Erin's face clenched, her eyes widening as she thought of what
Yukito had shown her. "Eek... you're probably right!" Quickly,
though, she added, "And his house is like a freaking museum!
Except for Yukito's room, it's so... perfect." She pretended to
shudder, laughing. Really, Erin was relieved for the subject
change. She didn't want to dump her stupid girl problems on
Reese. He could practically sense everyone's problems, anyway,
so there wasn't any reason to purposely add to that. Plus, it
felt a little awkward talking about her feelings about Yukito to
Reese...
Now Reese looked back down at his survey paper. "Well, one of
the things I don't like about Yukito is his indecisiveness. He
never sticks with what he says he going to do, and he has this
aversion to being straight with people. Me, I think life is too
short to spend it all in limbo. So..." Erin pursed her lips,
fingering the charm on her necklace. It sounded like he was
talking bad about Yukito, and it was rubbing her the wrong
way... They were friends... Why would he do that? Meanwhile,
Reese continued: "If nothing is really going on there, I was
wondering if you and I could go out sometime, to a movie or
something."
Erin looked up from her thoughts. "Huh?"
"If not, that's alright. Just...think about it."
In just seconds, Erin mentally sorted the two options: one--
Reese was legitimately asking her out, which would mean both
that he liked her and was probably jealous of Yukito... and that
Yukito would feel hurt if he did still like her, because... he
might still like her. Or maybe he didn't care, and so it was
okay to let it go for a bit, and-- This was really complicated.
Reese's words interrupted her thoughts. "But anyways," He
glanced back at the survey. "The next question is, 'How has your
Enhancement changed the way you see yourself and others?' For
me...hm...I guess since I already liked to study people anyways,
it hasn't changed it a whole lot. When I first got my
Enhancement was the worst, though. I felt like everyone assumed
I was judging them, analyzing them like a piece of equipment or
something, when I really wasn't. I don't like to use my
Enhancement to 'get an edge' on people, I just use it to
understand them better."
"Okay, Mark Twain, let me get all that novel down." She gave him
a pretend-chiding look before breaking into a grin.
He gave a smirk, shrugging. "I guess I see myself as an
ambassador of sorts. A mediator, maybe. Now...your turn."
Writing down some phrases Reese had used ('sees himself as
ambassador... mediator'), Erin worked her lips in thought.
"Hmm... I feel special... I mean, not in some annoying, elitist
way, but like... I didn't have to get chosen, and my parents
didn't have to research it and agree to it... they usually say
no to everything, so... the Enhancement is really special. And I
think others are special, too. They're unique, and can do things
no one else can, and I think they're really lucky, even though
there are downsides for a lot of them." Erin took a breath,
looked up at Reese, and gave him a smile. "And... sure! To 'a
movie, or something.'" She nodded. "Sure!"

Reese Middleton
"If not, that's alright. Just...think about it." It had taken a
lot more than he had thought it would to get the words out. I
really just asked her out. We've known each other for years, and
I just asked her out. There's no going back now. Erin must have
had some inclination, but to call it out as it was - that he
wanted to try them as more than just friends - was a bit
terrifying. He knew they were both worried about Yukito, but
after a lot of deliberation, Reese had decided that he couldn't
live his life based on his assumption of other people's
feelings. He understood them too well sometimes, and it muddled
up his own decisions and judgement. The basics were that he
liked Erin a lot, and she seemed to like him well enough, too.
And if Yukito hadn't done anything to go against that, and had
said nothing to Reese or to Erin...who were they to live their
lives frozen, waiting for Yukito to make a move?
But he knew Erin was more attached to his best friend than she
would willingly admit. He couldn't just tell her to forget about
Yukito and to focus on him instead. Reese wouldn't have wanted
that anyways, even though a part of him kind of wished she
would. But Erin would call it unfair, would think it cruel, and
maybe she would wait for Yukito forever. Reese didn't want that.
As soon as the request left his lips, he switched, giving Erin
to sort out her own feelings on the matter in her own way, to
either let it slide or mull over it, or to give an answer in her
own way.
"But anyways," He glanced back at the survey. "The next question
is, 'How has your Enhancement changed the way you see yourself
and others?' For me...hm...I guess since I already liked to
study people anyways, it hasn't changed it a whole lot. When I
first got my Enhancement was the worst, though. I felt like
everyone assumed I was judging them, analyzing them like a piece
of equipment or something, when I really wasn't. I don't like to
use my Enhancement to 'get an edge' on people, I just use it to
understand them better."
"Okay, Mark Twain, let me get all that novel down." Came her
tease, a smile on her face as she sent him a mockingly
reproachful look.
He gave a smirk, shrugging. "I guess I see myself as an
ambassador of sorts. A mediator, maybe. Now...your turn."
She wrote it down, still wriggling her mouth thoughtfully while
she wrote. Reese smiled. When his little brother had first
learned to read and write, he would have the same pensive look
about him, but it was even cuter on high-school Erin.
He nodded, turning to
write when she added, "And... sure! To 'a movie, or something.'
Sure!"
Reese nodded again to let her know he had heard, his eyes still
focused on the paper. He tried to play it cool, but a ridiculous
grin made his way across his face and refused to leave. His
heart felt like it had just clashed its way out of his chest and
made a quick rampage around the empty room. He wrote on the
line, 'Feels really special and unique..gifted with something
from parents..and the others, too.'
"Awesome," he said, deliberately unclear as to what precisely he
was referring to. "Two questions down already, plus a bonus.
Now..what do you dream about most often?" He turned his head
toward her, resting his chin in the palm of his hand, his elbow
propped up on the table and a cheeky grin on his face.
"Something like, 'Reese's beautiful eyes', or 'being a mermaid'
or 'coming to school in my underwear'?"

Erin Spenser
"Hmm... I feel special..." she said, answering the next survey
question. "I mean, not in some annoying, elitist way, but
like... I didn't have to get chosen, and my parents didn't have
to research it and agree to it... they usually say no to
everything, so... the Enhancement is really special. And I think
others are special, too. They're unique, and can do things no
one else can, and I think they're really lucky, even though
there are downsides for a lot of them." Erin took a breath,
looked up at Reese, and gave him a smile. He nodded, turning to
write when she added, "And... sure! To 'a movie, or something.'
Sure!"
Reese nodded and kept writing. Erin pursed her lips. He didn't
seem very happy.... Did he only ask so that she could take her
mind off of Yukito? Hmm... probably, Erin decided. Well, it was
still sweet of him, and it would be fun, and especially because
she did want to take her mind off the whole confusing
thing.Plus, Reese was a sweetie anyway, so it was all good.
"Awesome, two questions down already, plus a bonus. Now..what do
you dream about most often?" He turned his head toward her,
resting his chin in the palm of his hand, his elbow propped up
on the table and grinned. "Something like, 'Reese's beautiful
eyes', or 'being a mermaid' or 'coming to school in my
underwear'?"
The dream ideas made Erin burst into laughter. "Reese! What the
crap?!" Sure her laugh was too loud, Erin tried to cover her
mouth with her hands, but the giggles persisted. "Omigod, I do
not dream about underwear!"
When she could talk clearly again, Erin pushed some loose hair
behind her ear and said, "I don't have a lot of recurring
dreams. At least, not any that I remember. Hmm... the only
things I remember dreaming about more than once is a dream where
no one came to our concerts, and another where I basically just
have a really bad day at school." She gave a laugh, brushing it
off pretty quickly. "Y'know, why do only bad dreams become the
recurring ones? Do you have any happy recurring dreams? Please
tell me yes!"
