       Reese/Yukito - Flame Wars

The window was open, of course. And the light on. Reese stood in
the moonlight just outside Yukito's bedroom, peering in as
inconspicously as he could manage. Yukito was in the room,
alone, sitting at his computer. The browser was open to the
recent harsh responses he had been handing out lately like
candy, and Yukito himself had his entire upper half flopped
dejectedly across the desk in a posture of one who has given up
completely. Reese frowned, reaching up to pull himself up a
little bit on the windowsill. He whispered, "Yukito."
The boy sat up, his dark hair falling into his eyes as he
whirled around to find the source of the voice. Once he saw
Reese, he looked away again, burying his face in the arm that
was still outstretched across the desk. But Reese had already
seen the tears in the boy's eyes. And he could feel the pain
from outside the window, like someone was repeatedly stabbing
him in his chest and throat. Reese knew that if he entered the
house, he would not only be endangering himself to the whims of
Dr. Ramsey, but he would also be hit with the full power of
Yukito's feelings. He steeled himself, whispering a little
       louder, "Yukito, please."
"Leave me the hell alone, Reese," Yukito mumbled into his arm.
But he was still careful not to speak too loudly. "You can't be
       here."
"What? Because of ol' Ram-Ram in there?" Reese whispered, trying
to put a little laugh into his voice. Yukito didn't move an
inch. Reese felt the boy's heart sink into the floor, an almost
tangible cloud hanging over his head. "Yukito, if you don't let
me come in, I'm going to shout and let him know I'm here."
A scowl of a sound from Yukito, then. After a moment's
hesitation, the boy rose from his desk, opening the window the
rest of the way and offering a hand to help Reese inside. Reese
wanted to cry when their hands touched, feeling the unevenness
of Yukito's heartbeat, and seeing the angry tears on his heated
face. They stood there for a moment in front of the window,
saying nothing. Then Yukito scowled, still whispering, "He's in
his office, but you shouldn't stay. He's got ears like a hawk."
"You know I couldn't just leave you be, after all that crap you
posted online. Yukito, what the hell? Why get so mad over an
anonymous message? Why take it out on Erin?"
"Because I felt like it," Yukito snarled.
       "That's a lie."
       "**** you."
"Yukito...something happened with Dr. Ramsey, right? He said
something. I don't know what he told you, but he said something
that really hurt. You're all ****ed off at him, and now you're
       taking it out on others."
"Stop analyzing me, you little ****!" Yukito hissed, stepping
towards Reese in a singularly aggressive move.
Reese lifted his hands to his temples. "He's the only one that
gets under your skin like this. Look, I don't know what he said,
but you can't do this. You can't shut yourself up and cut
everybody off like you're some tragic hero from a novel. Why
don't you just put--" Reese's words dropped off, falling hollow
into the pit of his stomach. "Yukito."
       "Go home, Reese."
       "Yukito. What did you do?"
       "What?"
Reese just stared at Yukito, aghast, then he reached over,
taking hold of Yukito's black tanktop and revealing a single
pin-sized mark, trailing from the middle of Yukito'd abdomen to
the bottom of his left rib-cage. Reese looked up into Yukito's
stony face, then he reached up and grabbed a thick chunk of
Yukito's hair, shoving the boy downward. Pulling his face close
to Yukito's, he hissed, "What the hell do you think you're
doing, you idiot?! You think this is going to fix things?! Huh?
You're an idiot. An absolute idiot."
"I know it," Yukito growled back, his eyes blazing in fury at
Reese. But he swallowed, hard, and Reese felt the pang in his
chest again. He couldn't tell if the tears in Yukito's eyes were
from the tight grip he had on the boy's hair, or if it was
something else entirely. "It's all I've got to fight back. He
owns me, Reese...and it's all I've got to get him back...I
       just..."
Reese shoved Yukito away, letting go of his hair. Yukito fell
back against the messy bedroom floor, landing on a cushion of
discarded papers and clothing, too dejected to even sit back up.
For several minutes, he just laid there and wept, hiding his
face in the dirty shirts. Reese stood by the door, guarding the
hole where the handle used to be.
"You're so selfish, Yukito," he said at last. "I know you've
been on your own a lot, but do you ever really think about
others? How do you think we feel, having all this hot and cold
       from you, huh?"
"He doesn't trust me, Reese. Nobody really does. They shouldn't.
That's why you should just go home." But even as he said it,
Reese knew it was the last thing Yukito wanted.
"Stop being the tragic hero, and get your act together. You
know, if you would just ask them, they would be fighting along
with you, instead of always ganging up on you." Reese walked
over to where Yukito lay on the ground, pulling him up into a
sitting position, and looking straight into his face. "You are
not doing this - any of it - again. Or so help me I will send
Clarence to kick your sorry a** to oblivion and back. Because
then, you'd fully deserve it. This," he gestured back toward the
missing door handle, where somewhere in the not-so-distant
office Dr. Ramsey sat working, "This is petty, and childish. Not
to mention stupid. You're messed up. I'll agree with that. But
we all are, so stop trying to be the only one singled out."
"No, Reese, listen..." Yukito sniffed, finally looking up into
his eyes, "You don't understand...everyone out there, they have
family, even adopted ones. They have friends, who will be with
them through anything. They have support systems, every day, and
even if they have to eat a lot of ****, there's someone looking
out for them. But me? I'm tied to him. He's taken away everyone
else, and he'll keep doing that."
"Like hell. I'd like to see him try."
Yukito looked up at Reese, surprise riddled into his torn
expression. Reese's face was so dark with solemnity that he
sincerety couldn't possibly be denied. After a long moment,
Yukito bit his lip, holding out his right hand, where he had
been holding a little needle so tightly his hand had bled. His
voice shook audibly, breaking at points so that Reese felt a
surge of fear that Dr. Ramsey would hear him. "In all honesty, I
regretted it as soon as I'd done it, Reese. I just
thought...Well, after all the 'ego' comments, and being told I'm
too...too weak, too scared. I'm scared of everything, and I'm
just so tired all the time..And Erin was trying so hard to make
me stop being so hard on myself, and it just felt like..like it
was the last thing I needed, to be reminded of how good I wasn't
by her being so good to me. And she doesn't even know me, you
       know?"
Reese pursed his lips together. "You don't even give her a
       chance to, man."
Yukito paused a moment, then nodded. Reese took the needle,
adding, "You need to seriously talk with her."
       Again, Yukito nodded.
       "Do you feel better now?"
Yukito shrugged. Reese offered him a smile, wanting to reach out
and pat him on the shoulder, but feeling like he couldn't. "I
have to go, now. But if you need me, message me, okay?" He held
up the needle, sending Yukito a death-glare, "And this, this
       crap can't keep happening."
"Of course," Yukito croaked. Reese stared at his friend for a
moment, then fell forward, wrapping Yukito in a one-armed hug.
       "You're an idiot."
Yukito said nothing, but Reese could almost hear his response.
'I know.' Reese stood up, walking over to the window and placing
the needle in his jacket pocket.
"You need to tell everyone what happened, too."
At this, Yukito looked up, his eyes widened slightly. Reese
rolled his eyes. "Well, obviously. They've got to know why you
blew a gasket earlier. It's not going to make any sense unless
you're completely straight with them, Yukito. Be straight with
them. They can handle it. And if they can't...they can always
walk away. But you know you've tried, alright?"
This time, when Yukito nodded, Reese sent him a smile, and a
thumbs up. "You got this, bro."
Still silent, Yukito offered the smallest of smiles, watching
Reese clamber out of the window.
Reese had no idea if anything had been resolved. It hadn't been
the first time Reese had snuck over to Yukito's house to try and
       console him.
It had, however, been the first time he hadn't ended up lying.
Reese kept repeating his head the evenness of Yukito's heartbeat
as he had left, thinking over the night's events.
I guess we'll just have to wait and see...
