       Lilith Eytinge
His raised eyebrow pained her, as did his snide comments,
cutting through her more acutely than she would ever give away
with a weak expression. "You do realize that that made no sense,
right? The only thing these guys and I have in common is that we
can get around in pitch black better than you." He shrugged.
"But, yeah, you're right about the harmony thing. Obviously.
Keep working on that sarcasm, babe, you'll get there one day."
She willed herself not to look as flustered as she felt, her
pursed lips the only hint of irritation as he slide the books
back toward her. "Taking an interest in the science of your
       people now, huh?"
Lilith sighed, feeling that he had left that opening just
especially for her. He knew her well enough to know she'd stick
around long enough to give him a decent rapport. Didn't they
always seem to get caught in this little loop? “Well, I could
have checked out books on the ass, but I already learn plenty
about those by being around you all the time.”
"Oh, see, you're getting better already! That one was good,"
Trent encouraged playfully, giving her a nod of approval that
only caused to make her even more unsettled. He said it like she
was some puppy he was training. And no, it hadn't been a 'good
one'. "Stay around me long enough, and you'll be fluent in
witticism. We can set up a study date and everything."
“If you're trying to woo me,” she snarled, “You're really doing
a horrid job of it. How about you try your hand at talking to me
like a human being instead of your latest pet?” Her eyes
narrowed into slits, and she gave him a quick up and down glance
before adding, “Or is your hand only limited to pleasuring
yourself?” She paused a moment before slipping her books off the
table and stepping away, her eyes meeting his coolly. Her voice
dropped into a calm deliberation, each syllable accentuated
delicately in order to emphasize her taunt. “My mistake.”

       Trent Fisher
"Oh, see, you're getting better already! That one was good." He
nodded in approval, fully knowing it would egg her on. She
didn't like being talked down to, and she always wanted the
final word. Trent added, "Stay around me long enough, and you'll
be fluent in witticism. We can set up a study date and
       everything."
“If you're trying to woo me,” Lilith hissed, playing right into
it the way Trent had anticipated she would. “You're really doing
a horrid job of it. How about you try your hand at talking to me
like a human being instead of your latest pet?” He opened his
mouth to retort, but Lilith cut him off. “Or is your hand only
       limited to pleasuring yourself?”
Trent mentally chastised himself for not seeing that coming from
Lilith. Her particular brand of sass could deliver any line, and
he did like to incite her. Still, he rose to his feet behind the
circulation desk. "Hey, now," he started as a smile returned to
his face. She didn't back down, and at least she used her need
to have the last say to her advantage. He respected that. "My
hand's abilities border on unlimited, thank you."
“My mistake.” She dropped the words like they were venom, moving
away with her books. But he wondered if it was possible to get
the last word with her. Trent decided to try. He stepped out
from the desk, blocking her path. "Yeah, but it's not your
fault. You assumed I was average. But I think you forgot that
here, no one is average. You're far above average, but you know
that, of course." He shrugged. Time to take a different route.
"Of course, with that being said, you know I am far above
average, too. It's why you put up with me." He smiled at her,
       knowingly.

“If you're trying to woo me,” Lilith hissed, “You're really
doing a horrid job of it. How about you try your hand at talking
to me like a human being instead of your latest pet?” He opened
his mouth to retort, but Lilith cut him off, giving him a quick
once-over as she said, “Or is your hand only limited to
       pleasuring yourself?”
What a delicious wave of pleasure it was to see that he had been
even the least bit taken aback. "Hey, now," he started to smile
once again, recovering, "My hand's abilities border on
       unlimited, thank you."
Lilith couldn't resist a scoff of disbelief. As if he was the
only guy who ever laid claim to that sort of skill set. But
she'd been around long enough to know that they were always just
talk, and none of the walk. “My mistake.” She turned to move
away, feeling that she had quite possibly over-stayed her
welcome in the library. It had been a bad idea to try and get
out of the house, if she was always going to end up running into
somebody she couldn't stand to be around.
He should have just let her go, let her leave then. But no, it
was Trent Fisher, after all. He raced around her, blocking her
path and continuing the conversation from some sort of
narcissistic habit. "Yeah, but it's not your fault. You assumed
I was average. But I think you forgot that here, no one is
average. You're far above average, but you know that, of
course." He shrugged. She stared at him, unimpressed. "Of
course, with that being said, you know I am far above average,
too. It's why you put up with me." He was sending her that smug
grin of his that said that he believed himself to have won.
Lilith met his eyes evenly for a moment, fighting against her
next comment, telling herself to just walk away. But in the end,
she found herself reciting, "Many highly intelligent people are
poor thinkers. Many people of average intelligence are skilled
thinkers. The power of a car is separate from the way the car is
driven. Edward de Bono." Every word was calm and collected, but
her eyes burned brightly with barely withheld fury as she spoke,
"Being "average" or "above average" doesn't mean ****, Trent.
And having a hunk of technology shoved into your body doesn't
magically turn you into a superhero or a leader or Don Juan or a
revolutionary, so don't pretend like it does. We're entitled to
nothing. We're just the latest trend, the newest plastic posing
as normal. So don't talk to me about how you're "far above
average" like it means something special.”

       Trent Fisher
Lilith motioned to leave, but he wasn't quite finished. People
like Lilith were too good to lose too quickly. He moved to stand
in her path, casually continuing, "Yeah, but it's not your
fault. You assumed I was average. But I think you forgot that
here, no one is average. You're far above average, but you know
that, of course." He shrugged. She stared at him, clearly not
impressed. He wouldn't expect Lilith to be, not yet, anyway. So
he pressed on, "Of course, with that being said, you know I am
far above average, too. It's why you put up with me."
Lilith met his eyes evenly for a moment, and he could see the
wheels in her head turning. His mouth twitched in a grin,
waiting on what kind of thing she'd say next. Whatever it was,
it would likely be laced with her venom, and he wasn't opposed
to that at all. "Many highly intelligent people are poor
thinkers. Many people of average intelligence are skilled
thinkers. The power of a car is separate from the way the car is
       driven. Edward de Bono."
He'd pressed a button that released her annoyance in that
endearing, poisonous manner, where her words dropped from her
mouth like acid. Trent raised his eyebrows and replied just as
evenly, "'He wrapped himself in quotations—as a beggar would
enfold himself in the purple of Emperors.' Rudyard Kipling."
"Being "average" or "above average" doesn't mean ****, Trent.
And having a hunk of technology shoved into your body doesn't
magically turn you into a superhero or a leader or Don Juan or a

as normal. So don't talk to me about how you're "far above
average" like it means something special.”
Leaning his elbow onto the top of the circulation desk, Trent
twisted is face into an exaggerated form of curiosity. "Really?
That's interesting, because I can list off at least a dozen
scientists, intellectuals, and philosophers who would disagree
with that statement. In fact, our very biology argues that. It's
no secret that you're bitter and jaded, Lilith, and I'm not
saying you shouldn't be. You got the short end of the
Enhancement stick, and that sucks. But target your anger at the
right people, why don't you? And then you could appreciate your
own natural superiority. Just a thought."
He went back behind the desk, dropped back into the chair, and
propped his feet up. He pulled the magazine back in front of his
face and sent her a wave from behind the words. "Just think
       about it. Later, Lily."

       Lilith Eytinge
She glared at him for a long moment, trying to stay her words
but finding herself utterly incapable. There was something
intoxicating yet infuriating about Trent Fisher that rendered
her tongue completely lose and unleashed every venom in her
body. Even if it killed her, she would still want to have the
last word with Trent, and she felt as if nothing in this world
would ever change that. From the way his eyelashes were too
long, too dark, too curly. To the knowing, cocky grin that
waited for his bait to pull in the catch he so desired, just for
the sake of a little fun. To the way that he always seemed to
think in small, tightly laced circled.
"Many highly intelligent people are poor thinkers. Many people
of average intelligence are skilled thinkers. The power of a car
is separate from the way the car is driven. Edward de Bono."
He arched his eyebrows, and in that moment she would have been
willing to bet her left leg that he didn't get what she was
trying to say at all. "'He wrapped himself in quotations—as a
beggar would enfold himself in the purple of Emperors.' Rudyard
       Kipling."
Lilith let out a sigh, her shoulders slumping with the movement.
She couldn't expect him to even try and look at the meaning of
what she said. It seemed like Trent only heard basic things.
Even if he could speak pretty, she felt like he only took in
information through caveman speech. 'Food', 'Female', 'Ugh',
'Fun'. Her next words held much more of her natural venom, that
bitterness and anger directed at the one guy who just could not
take a hint. "Being "average" or "above average" doesn't mean
****, Trent. And having a hunk of technology shoved into your
body doesn't magically turn you into a superhero or a leader or
Don Juan or a revolutionary, so don't pretend like it does.
We're entitled to nothing. We're just the latest trend, the
newest plastic posing as normal. So don't talk to me about how
you're "far above average" like it means something special.”
Leaning his elbow onto the top of the circulation desk, Trent
twisted is face into an exaggerated form of curiosity. He still
wasn't listening, was he? He was just making fun of her.
"Really? That's interesting, because I can list off at least a
dozen scientists, intellectuals, and philosophers who would
disagree with that statement. In fact, our very biology argues
that. It's no secret that you're bitter and jaded, Lilith, and

right people, why don't you? And then you could appreciate your
own natural superiority. Just a thought."
Her hands balled into fists at her sides, but she tried to hide
them from his view. Even though he could probably see the flames
in her eyes in that moment.
He went back behind the desk, dropped back into the chair, and
propped his feet up, casual as anything. But she knew it must be
a front. He did this just to jar her, just to get her worked up.
He pulled the magazine back in front of his face and sent her a
wave from behind the words. "Just think about it. Later, Lily."
“You'll see, Trent. Maybe it won't be tomorrow, maybe not in a
year. But we'll become old news, and when things become old news
they become hated, just like the rest of the world. Like an ugly
80s ensemble, we won't be seen as 'Gifted', but as an
embarrassment. It's not about my failed Enhancement, it's about
all the ones that worked, and think they're the greatest thing
ever. We help no one. We fix nothing. Just like the cocky brat
who thinks taunting women is the best way to prove he's a man.
After a few years, you'll just be another boring adult, Trent,
just like the rest of the world. When you're not so young, not
so fast, not so free. 'Natural superiority', my a**. Think about
       that, Trent.”
She spun on her heel, long black hair flying behind her as she
hurriedly made her exist, the doors sliding shut behind her as
her face burned. Why did she let Trent get under her skin so
much? Why did she try so hard to make him understand why she
hated the Enhancement program so much?
She refused to let tears fall. It would be like letting him win,
and she couldn't stand even the thought of that. Stupid Trent,
and his stupid face, and his stupid words and stupid smirk.
       Lilith is done here.

"Really?" Trent asked, sarcastically, in response to Lilith's
argument. "That's interesting, because I can list off at least a
dozen scientists, intellectuals, and philosophers who would
disagree with that statement. In fact, our very biology argues

She was on fire now, burning to tell him off, he was sure of it.
Perfect. He went back to his spot behind the desk and pulled the
magazine back in front of his face. He gave her a wave from
behind the pages. "Just think about it. Later, Lily."
Of course, she had to respond. He grinned, unseen, as she ranted
       on.
“You'll see, Trent. Maybe it won't be tomorrow, maybe not in a

"Mm-hmm," he responded, purposely flipping the page in his
magazine. She was wrong, of course. But it was because Lilith
carried her anger with her the way a varsity player wears the
patches on his jacket. She begged for people to see it, to
notice her anger. Trent was just giving her what she wanted, and
it was hilarious. She acted as if she didn't realize at all the
impact they'd have on science and technology from here on out,
whether "failed" or failed or not. "Have a bright, sunshine-y
       day, now."
       Trent is done here.
