Zinnia Natter
Zinnia jumped, then decided she would talk with him for the time
being. It wasn't like she was in a hurry to give herself cramps
and eye strain. So she placed her notes where she was in the
book and closed it, then gave Jasper her full attention.
"Sure... what do you want to know?" She felt a little
uneasy-what if he asked her directly what kind of research she
was doing? She couldn't very well answer 'name-hunting, so I can
go headhunting'...
"When you say, 'sure' does that mean you actually want a
literal penny to share your thoughts, or you are just willing to
share your thoughts?" Jasper laughed again.
"If you're going to give me money for sharing my thoughts I'm
going to start charging a dollar or more. Haha, no, I'm just
willing to share. I'm not a shrink." Zinnia smiled. She was
starting to like this Jasper, and his sense of humor.
"I am sort of curious about this research of yours. Although,
it's not exactly necessary that you tell me. What I'm really
more curious about though, was you in general."
"Well, the research topic is... kind of private, if you would.
But I'm mainly just looking up names of people who have written
papers about Enhancements. There was also an assignment given to
me in a composition class that overlaps with scientific
writings, so I've really been looking for papers to critique.
And I had a few names floating in my head, so I've been trying
to find those. They're old, though, no electronic record. Have
to find them the old-fasioned way."
It wasn't necessarily a lie, at least not all of it. She had no
composition course and she wasn't going to write a paper about
Enhancements. Although she could in a pinch.
The names, though, they weren't a lie. The ones she knew were
correct in her head were either not in the electronic database
that students were allowed to look in, or took a lot of care to
prevent them from leaking onto the internet. She couldn't find
them anywhere. But if they had worked with Hal, she knew there
would be some record somewhere. Based on the little she knew
about Hal, he was the kind of person who would just write down
the names of people he'd worked with, and when he'd worked with
them. She was just looking for the ones who fit the time frame
of before and just after her Enhancement had been given to her.
"As for me... What about me do you want to know? I can't promise
I'll answer, but its ok to ask." Zinnia smiled again. He seemed
so hesitant about disturbing her, it was sweet. "And don't worry
about offending me just by asking."
EDIT by Mascii: On this post and your post before last, you
forgot to put Zinnia's name at the top of the post, so I added
it in. ;) Please double-check in the future.

"Old-fashioned way, reading? I always thought of it as
something all generations would do. I wish I could read regular
books." Jasper looked sadly at his eBook. "Sadly, some,
enhancements aren't gentle with books . . ."
"As for me... What about me do you want to know? I can't promise

Jasper was contagious. "And don't worry about offending me just

Jasper flushed slightly. "Well, we may be a small community of
'special' people." Here Jasper laughed again. "Which really
sounds like we're a bunch of mental patients, but anyway. You
just seem . . . Interesting. So, the most important questions.
Which came first the chicken or the egg, and are you a cat
person or dog person?" Jasper teased, she seemed to find him
amusing anyway.
"Personally, Zinnia, I prefer dogs. And I think there ought to
have been a chicken to have an egg. But it's all personal
preference, don't you think?"
His questions were null arguments people had been having for
ages, but he wanted to tread carefully. It was the first time
he'd met her and he didn't want to scare her off with rude
questions.

"No, old-fashioned way as in, without electronics. Most people

Zinnia smiled, almost laughing. He's so round about... I wonder

"I'm more of a cat person myself. They're not as loud and while
they take just as much upkeep, they get in the way less."
She smiled. "You?"
"Personally, Zinnia, I prefer dogs. And I think there ought to

"Well, in conclusion with all the science I know, the egg came

question literally or not. Metaphorically, of course there has
to be a chicken, but there must also be a rooster, so it's a
null question anyway." Zinnia's tone came out a little bit
sharper than she had intended, so she made sure her next words
were a little more easy-going. "And... what do you really want
to know? Really, you can't scare me off. I wouldn't want to
leave, anyway. Surely you heard what the librarian said about me
having to check out at the front desk so she could turn the
alarm off?"

were unfortunately completely out of the question. It was a text
message from his friend asking him to come over. He had finished
reading his book as well.
"Um, Zinnia, I have to go, nice meeting you." Jasper got up

"Bye, Jasper! See you around."
He left. She kept her back to the students as she worked through
a couple more pages in her book, but gave up with a sigh. She
wasn't comfortable here, with so many hostile glances now that
Jasper had left. So she packed up her books, and wandered over
to the front desk. After getting the all-clear, she walked out
the front door. To her place it was.
Zinnia has left the Library.

Trent Fisher
One of his classes this year was, thankfully, Library Resources,
which Trent knew was scheduling-code for him working a couple of
hours in the library everyday as an aide. He'd signed up for it
before school started, but it had been a nice surprise once
classes began in the fall. Trent quickly got into the groove of
things in the library: he'd sort and shelve the books, check
books in and out whenever kids needed it, and pretty much just
read books for the rest of the time. That is, unless he got told
by the librarians to do something else in particular. That
didn't happen too often, though, so he got plenty of good
reading time in.
At that moment, Trent had picked up the latest edition of one of
the pop science magazines the school subscribed to. He'd laughed
when he saw the headline story: "You Are a Cyborg!" So of
course, he had to read it.
When he'd first gotten his Enhancement, he'd had to adjust to
how things looked like in the day. Even the glossy paper in a
magazine turned out to be too bright most times, and even though
he could read through it and ignore the discomfort--it felt like
his eyes were dilated all the time now, even though they still
operated relatively normally-- Trent had found it was easier
just to wear the shades while he read underneath the fluorescent
white lights. It definitely saved a headache later, and kind of
made him look cool, he thought. So now he sat behind the desk,
reading about Cyborg theory with sunglasses over his
Cyborg-eyes. Yeah, things were pretty all right.
He'd just gotten to the political theory part of the article--
talking about how integration with technology influenced the
political sphere-- when someone came up to the desk, putting a
shadow over his reading material. He looked up, finding Lilith
there. "Hey." He sent her a smirk as he set the magazine aside.
"How may I be of service?"

Lilith Eytinge
The library was so noisy. She really came here mostly because if
she didn't force herself out into areas were humanoids
frequented, she would shut herself up in her apartment and never
look back. In a way, Lilith wanted to interact, wanted to take
part in the whispered discussions and the subdued laughter, but
she felt distanced, separated from the others like she was just
some dud egg being pushed about by boiling water.
I always have the weirdest analogies. She let out a sigh,
closing her book on yet another novel on efficient flight
patterns of bats, and how little they were understood even now.
Checking the time on her cell phone, she decided to give up on
today's efforts to sit in a public place and not speak. Across
from her, a couple of kids sat silently studying at a table,
their gazes focused on their books but their feet, slipped from
their sandals, were focused on playing with the other under the
table in an elaborate game of footsie. Lilith felt like rolling
her eyes - sure, it was better than sucking face all the time,
as Reese and Syd liked to do, but really? It seemed like such a
childish thing to do.
Lilith gathered up her four books on aviation and bats, heading
toward the checkout. She could finish her reading while much
more comfortably situated at home, anyways. She had almost
reached the front desk when she realized she knew the boy who
was on call - it was none other than Trent Fisher, Mr. God's
Gift To Women himself. She was half tempted to ditch the books
on some random shelf and sneak out without having to deal with
him. He looked particularly insufferable tonight, looking very
amused by a magazine he was reading, the sunglasses catching the
overhead light and making them glint. She let out a weary sigh
and sauntered up to the front desk anyways, hoping to have the
chance to dramatically drop the books down and make him jump,
but he looked up and noticed her too quickly.
"Hey." He sent her a smirk as he set the magazine aside. "How
may I be of service?"
Her lips were pursed tightly together, setting the stack down on
the counter and sliding it across to him with one hand, her long
nails tapping impatiently on the hardback covers. "I'm checking
these out," she informed him, sounding more irritated than she
intended. Trying to recover and soften her statement a little
more, she crossed her arms, adding, "If you please."

Trent Fisher
He looked up from the article he'd been reading as Lilith
Eytinge approached the circulation desk. She had that perturbed
look on her face, like she'd just asked the mirror who the
fairest of them all was, and the mirror had paused a few minutes
before declaring her as the winner. It was a look that only
looked good on her.
"Hey." He sent her a smirk as he set the magazine aside. "How
may I be of service?"
Still with that slightly put-off look, as though coming to the
library was too lowly for ladies like Lilith, she scooted her
books across the counter. Trent's smile grew just a bit. She's a
complete diva, he thought. But with the way she carried herself,
she might be able to pull it off without becoming annoying about
it. Maybe. He still hadn't decided. Eventually, most girls
started annoying him, but that usually took them changing their
facebook status to "in a relationship" for him to begin to feel
bothered. Lilith certainly didn't have that qualification.
Lilith's nails tapped the covers of the books impatiently. "I'm
checking these out."
with one hand, Trent took off his sunglasses, meeting her eyes.
He raised his eyebrows.
She pulled her hand away, adding a hasty, "If you please."
"I suppose I can do that," Trent replied, feigning weariness as
he reached for the books. "It's not like it's my job or
anything, but I can make an exception for you, Lilith. Since you
said please, and all." The feigned weariness fell into a
confident smile as he flipped the books over to scan them.
As the beep of the barcode scanner went off, Trent read the
titles of her book choices. Part of his training had been the
head librarian insisting that the workers shouldn't comment on
people's choices unless the patron brings it up first. And even
then, they were supposed to only offer help for finding more
books. But Trent thought that was a stupid rule, and rarely
followed it. And when it came to Lilith, he just had to comment.
"Bat Biology and Conservation, huh? That's different." He
shrugged, then looked at the next one. "America's Neighborhood
Bats: Understanding and Learning to Live in Harmony with Them."
He stopped, looked up at her, and smirked. "I was unaware that
there was disharmony between us and bats. I mean, I don't want
one for a pet or anything, but they're all right."
The last book, something about rehabilitating captive bats,
checked out to Lilith, too, and he handed them back to her with
the due date on a slip between the front covers. "Taking an
interest in the science of your people now, huh?"

Lilith Eytinge
Lilith's nails tapped the covers of the books impatiently. "I'm
checking these out."
Wordlessly, Trent removed his sunglasses, meeting her eyes
levelly with one eyebrow arched oh-so elegantly. Lilith hated to
admit it, but his hazel eyes, with the little glint from his
Enhancement creating a light blue haze over them, were really
fetching. And she was sure he knew it well enough himself.
She pulled her hand away, adding a hasty, "If you please."
"I suppose I can do that," Trent replied, feigning weariness as
he reached for the books. "It's not like it's my job or
anything, but I can make an exception for you, Lilith. Since you
said please, and all." The smirk he sent her would have been
seen as warm and playful. But she wasn't paying attention. No,
not at all. Nor at the way his eyes set off his hair, and how it
was a pity he had to wear those stupid sunglasses a lot.
The beep of the barcode was their only exchange for awhile, and
she prayed silently that he wouldn't comment on her book
choices. But, of course, he did. How unprofessional of him.
But she couldn't blame him. They were strange choices. Luckily
he hadn't seen her books from last week, mostly about vampires
and 1920s swimwear. That would have been hard to explain.
"Bat Biology and Conservation, huh? That's different."
To his shrug, she pursed her lips ever tighter, the bright red
lipstick a contrast to the pale shade of distaste to her cheeks
as she bit down at the inside of them "America's Neighborhood
Bats: Understanding and Learning to Live in Harmony with Them."
He stopped, looked up at her, and smirked. She hated that smirk
of his. "I was unaware that there was disharmony between us and
bats. I mean, I don't want one for a pet or anything, but
they're all right."
Lilith frowned. “And here I thought you were the expert on
winged mammals. And harmony.” Her cooled tones held a certain
note of caution to it, and she wished he would hurry up, and in
the same instant wished he would take longer with scanning the
books.
She wasn't sure how to feel when he slipped the receipt beneath
the cover of the last one, pushing them towards her. "Taking an
interest in the science of your people now, huh?"
With a sigh, she dropped her shoulders, reaching up to drop her
hands on top of her books, protectively laying claim to them.
“Well, I could have checked out books on the ass, but I already
learn plenty about those by being around you all the time.”

"Bat Biology and Conservation, huh? That's different." He
figured she must be taking some interest in her Enhancement, or
at least in Enhancements related to venom. Maybe he should
passive-aggressively point her to the snake books instead. They
tended to be more poisonous than bats, didn't she know? He jut
shrugged.
It was clear he'd gotten to her, just a little bit. With the way
she pursed her lips, she tried so hard to look like she didn't
care. But that just made it all the more obvious. She didn't
want him commenting because she didn't want him to know she
cared. It was a cute look for her, that half-flustered and
half-perturbed look. He smirked, and announced the second one.
"America's Neighborhood Bats: Understanding and Learning to Live
in Harmony with Them. I was unaware that there was disharmony
between us and bats. I mean, I don't want one for a pet or
anything, but they're all right."
Lilith frowned. “And here I thought you were the expert on
winged mammals. And harmony.”
She was trying so hard to be cool. She was constantly trying so
hard to be cool. It was funny, everyone else seemed to accept it
like it came naturally. But Trent saw through it like it was
water. He raised an eyebrow. "You do realize that that made no
sense, right? The only thing these guys and I have in common is
that we can get around in pitch black better than you." He
shrugged. "But, yeah, you're right about the harmony thing.
Obviously. Keep working on that sarcasm, babe, you'll get there
one day."
Setting the due date slip into the cover of the top book, Trent
slid them across the counter back to her. "Taking an interest in
the science of your people now, huh?"
Lilith sighed, like answering him was such a chore. She kept
talking to him, though, which meant it wasn't as terrible as she
liked to pretend. Her hands rested on her books as she lingered
a bit longer and attempted to use her sharp wit on him. “Well, I
could have checked out books on the ass, but I already learn
plenty about those by being around you all the time.”
"Oh, see, you're getting better already! That one was good,"
Trent encouraged playfully, giving her a nod of approval. "Stay
around me long enough, and you'll be fluent in witticism. We can
set up a study date and everything." He waited to see how she'd
respond, sure that no matter her response, it would be an
entertaining one. And if she somehow stumbled into agreeing, it
would be more time in the company of a pretty girl. And Trent
had always been curious about how she'd do with kissing with
that Enhancement. Give me new meaning for the kiss of death,
huh?
