Rayfield Library

There are actually two libraries on the Academy's grounds. The
newer one, Rayfield Library, has been redesigned for students.
With colorful, uniquely designed furniture and a focus on soft
but well-illuminated study areas, many of the students find the
library relaxing for more than academic reasons. It is common to
find a worn-out Academy student asleep on one of the couches, or
eating lunch with a friend. The teachers are actually prohibited
(unofficially) from coming into the library, so the kids can
really enjoy themselves in the atmosphere. There are adults
manning the check-out desks, of course, but they rarely have
anything to do with the professors or scientists at the school,
and they are all fairly young, cheerful workers in and of
themselves, providing a reprieve for the students' spirits.

Jasper Evans
Jasper sat at a table alone at the library. He didn't mind, he'd
come here to read, not socialize. Reading was awkward since his
Enhancement. With his new claws he had begun to sort of collect
books from the library. Some of the librarians didn't like him
for this.
He tried to be careful, he really did. But at some point,
usually after less than a day of reading, some part of the book
would be ripped open. He had finally came to the realization
that he should just get something he could put eBooks on. It had
made reading so much simpler.
He sat there quietly reading, every now and then looking up
to see the students around him. They were mostly all interacting
or smiling, or both, some were even napping.
And some others were actually reading or studying, but not too
many.
Jasper looked over what he was reading to look at the people
around him, they were so interesting and confusing. More often
than not, he didn't understand other teenager's behaviors, which
made them seem all the more foreign and interesting to him.
Jasper went back to quietly reading his book.
It was a book about a family enduring a war, it was called
'The Spy', a story that a friend of Jasper's had suggested to
him.

Zinnia Natter
As soon as she walked in the first library double doors, the
wall of sound hit her. Not that it was that loud, but the
difference between the feel of the two libraries was enormous.
The books she had sneaked out of Warner Library were heavy in
her bag, and she hoped that she could find an empty table.
However, she couldn't find a single table empty. There was,
however, one table that had been pushed back a little from the
rest, that only had one person there, sitting alone, quietly,
reading an e-book. His fingers had claws protruding at
uncomfortable seeming angles, which would explain both his
isolation and also the e-reader. Most students, even those with
e-readers, seemed to prefer actual books to e-readers when it
came to libraries and textbooks.
She walked in through the main doors, and sighed when the alarm
went off and everyone in the building looked at her.
"I promise its my Enhancement... Hal didn't do it and so there
are metal bits all over inside. It sets off every alarm from
here to Antarctica."
One of the librarians came over. "And where, exactly, is your
Enhancement located? For security purposes, ma'am, I need to
know."
Zinnia glared, but the librarian didn't back off.
"Fine. My right arm is entirely 'Enhanced', and my left eye
also. I cannot take them off or out or anything, without killing
myself. Happy?"
"Yes. You may go in. Just let me or whomever is working at the
front desk know when you leave, so we can turn the alarm off for
you."
"Always do. Thanks."
The alarm shut off, and when she glanced back at the other
students, they all scurried back to doing whatever they had been
before the alarm went off. She sighed. So much for being
unobtrusive. Now nobody wanted to sit next to her, all their
stuff was miraculously taking up twice as much room as before
and she kept getting stares from the other students there. She
was about to turn and leave the library when she seemed to enter
a bubble of peace, and looked up. She was right in front of the
kid with the claws, and he was looking at her.
"Uh.. hi." She said, momentarily taken aback by his gaze.

Jasper Evans
While Jasper was just starting to get into a particularly
interesting part of his book, when an alarm blared that made him
jump and look up from his eBook quickly.
It was a girl, rather tall, with pretty blond hair that
covered nearly half of her face. She walked with confidence and
carried a bag that seemed to hang heavily on her arm, judging by
her posture.
Momentarily, a librarian walked up, everyone stared at the
girl, the alarms continued to go off.
"I promise its my Enhancement... Hal didn't do it and so there
are metal bits all over inside. It sets off every alarm from
here to Antarctica."
The librarian looked sceptical. "And where, exactly, is your
Enhancement located? For security purposes, ma'am, I need to
know."
Zinnia glared, but the librarian didn't back off.
"Fine. My right arm is entirely 'Enhanced', and my left eye

"Yes. You may go in. Just let me or whomever is working at the
front desk know when you leave, so we can turn the alarm off for
you."
"Always do. Thanks."
The alarm was turned off and everyone went back to whatever
they were doing.
The girl sighed and glanced around, looking past him, he
looked down at his eBook when her gaze wandered towards him.
When people saw him looking at them it tended to not end well.
Everyone seemed to have re-situated their collective mass so
that there was no room at any other table. Jasper shrugged to
himself.
'So what? She looks pretty nice. Sometimes people can be so
rude.'
Jasper found the girl standing near him. Looking closer, she
seemed to be much more an adult than he thought. More grown up.
She turned and saw him looking at her. He smiled lightly at her.
"Uh.. hi." She said. Once again he'd managed to freak somebody
out. He could never quite figure out why though. He certainly
didn't try.
"Hello, if you need a place to sit, you can sit here. Since all
of the other tables seem to be miraculously full now." He
laughed.
"I'm Jasper." He said, smiling in a friendly way. "What's your
name?"

"Uh.. hi." She said. He looked a tad sorrowful, but he was
sitting all alone...
"Hello, if you need a place to sit, you can sit here. Since all
of the other tables seem to be miraculously full now." He
laughed, but not harshly. "I'm Jasper. What's your name?"
"Thank you, Jasper." She sat down, putting her back to the rest
of the students, not wanting to have to look at them at all for
a while. Whomever had the idea that putting a bunch of
'enhanced' kids would improve their life should have remembered
that not everyone fits into the 'in'-crowd.
"My name is Zinnia." She took her glove off her metal arm,
reaching it out for him to shake. She hoped he wouldn't worry
about scratching it. There was nothing worse than the
awkwardness of a hanging handshake, even if one party was
worried about injuring the other.

"Hello, if you need a place to sit, you can sit here. Since all
of the other tables seem to be miraculously full now." He
laughed. "I'm Jasper. What's your name?"
"Thank you, Jasper." She sat down, facing towards Jasper. She
looked across the table at him. "My name is Zinnia."
Zinnia lifted her right arm and pulled a skin-toned glove off.
Jasper was a little bit surprised, not at the enhancement but at
her wearing a glove to hide it. Underneath the glove that
reflected not only a natural skin tone but her skin tone
extremely well, there was an artificial arm.
She reached her hand out for a handshake. Jasper paused a
second, but figured if she wasn't ashamed of the enhancement in
her arm then he had nothing to worry about. He was careful to
not dig his claws into whatever material the arm was made of,
but tried not to show his discomfort.
As a general rule Jasper wasn't one for handshakes or anything
that involved his claws touching another person. So mainly he
kept to himself.
"So, Zinnia." Jasper said. "Are you here to study or just
because you were in the mood for reading?" He wasn't sure if she
wanted to just be left alone, or if she would prefer
conversation. But he figured that if she wanted to be left alone
she would let him know. Worst case he could just finish his
book.
He took a moment to note her eyes and hair. Her blonde hair was
rather long, and slightly curly. Her eyes, well, he couldn't see
her left eye very well, because it was covered by her hair, but
her right eye showed intelligence and was certainly a lovely
color.
He laughed lightly. She probably got told a lot how pretty she
was.
"You're very pretty, although you probably hear that a lot."
He didn't see why he shouldn't mention it anyway.

She reached her hand out for a handshake. Jasper paused a
second, but finally shook her hand, being careful with his claws
and looking a tiny bit uncomfortable. She smiled and retracted
her hand afterwards. The whispers behind her had picked up at
the revelation of her arm, but she wasn't about to put it away.
The kids would have to learn that she wasn't easily cowed.
"So, Zinnia." Jasper said. "Are you here to study or just
because you were in the mood for reading?" He seemed like he
wanted to finish his book, for which Zinnia was somewhat
grateful for. She needed some peace herself.
"I'm here...well, to do research, but most of it involves
reading and writing down na-- uh, taking notes." She couldn't
let the students know she was doing research on Hal and people
he'd worked with in the past. It would jeopardize her status as
a special student. "If you need silence, I can be quiet."
She could feel him looking at her, and was a mite uncomfortable,
but it didn't really bother her, even when he gave a small
chuckle.
"You're very pretty, although you probably hear that a lot." She
laughed a little at that.
"No, actually, I don't hear that very often. Thanks, though."
She started pulling out her books. "But I kind of have to work
on my research now... If you don't mind me sharing the table
with you..."

Jasper Evans
"So, Zinnia." Jasper said. "Are you here to study or just
because you were in the mood for reading?" Zinnia seemed a
little reluctant to chat, but Jasper didn't talk to many people
and enjoyed making the most of it.
"I'm here...well, to do research, but most of it involves
reading and writing down na-- uh, taking notes." Whatever Zinnia
was up to, she didn't want to talk about it. And it really
wasn't Jasper's business, whether he was curious or not.
'She seems to not want to talk much. But then again, that
probably means she should. I wonder how often she "does
research" and "writes down na- takes notes"'
"If you need silence, I can be quiet." She interrupted his
thoughts. She definitely didn't come to socialize. Jasper had
decided to not pester her too much, but still wanted to talk to
her some.
He looked closely at her, and laughed lightly."You're very
pretty, although you probably hear that a lot." She laughed with
him for a moment. "No, actually, I don't hear that very often.
Thanks, though." Jasper smiled. Zinnia started to dig through
her bag for books. He wondered what she was 'researching', but
thought it would be rude to ask something she obviously didn't
want to discuss. "But I kind of have to work on my research
now... If you don't mind me sharing the table with you..." She
said, he nodded.
Zinnia did some reading and taking notes. The books looked
more like boring records than anything. Jasper finished reading
his book, he'd been pretty near the end and it had definitely
been less than ten minutes since she started taking notes.
Jasper had been trying for years to learn to read upside down,
and had finally managed it. He usually couldn't read handwriting
unless it was very neat and he was also focusing very hard. But
he didn't bother much about trying to read Zinnia's.
Jasper folded his arms onto the table and rested his chin on
his arms. He looked at her face with a slight smile, his eyes
wide with curiosity and interest. Her face was set and she was
obviously deeply engrossed in her research.
"Penny for your thoughts?" He teased.

Zinnia did some reading and taking notes. The books were really
only records, and she kept thinking she saw an important name,
and writing it down, and then realizing that several of the
people that the names belonged to were dead. But she didn't
stop, feeling that her table partner was still examining her, or
the books, and while she didn't think he could read upside down,
there was always the chance. And she couldn't let it get out
what she was looking at. He'd made a rest for his chin with his
arms, and was watching her with a small smile. She was almost
going to ask him what he was watching her for when he asked her
a question.
"Penny for your thoughts?" He asked, with a playful tone in his
voice.
She jumped a bit, but looked up, closing the book after sliding
her notes into the book to hold her spot. "Sure... what do you
want to know?" She probably shouldn't be doing this in such a
public place anyway. But she also didn't want to take the books
to her place, as getting them back would pose some issues unless
she could somehow come back after hours.

Jasper Evans
There was a brief pause, but Jasper finished reading his book,
The Spy pretty quickly, since he was close to the end of the
book anyway. He folded his arms together in front of him on the
table. As he rested his head on his arms. He smiled, gazing up
at her face.
He wondered at how she seemed enveloped in what she was reading
and writing. A moment or two passed this way. "Penny for your
thoughts?" He said teasingly.
Zinnia jumped. Quickly placing her notes inside the book to
mark her place. "Sure... what do you want to know?" She seemed a
little uneasy.
"When you say, 'sure' does that mean you actually want a
literal penny to share your thoughts, or you are just willing to
share your thoughts?" Jasper laughed again. "I am sort of
curious about this research of yours. Although, it's not exactly
necessary that you tell me. What I'm really more curious about
though, was you in general." He worried slightly about making
her uncomfortable, but figured she couldn't get too upset. He
continued smiling at her.
'I hope she doesn't get upset or uncomfortable, what with me
asking her questions . . . '
