       Zinnia Natter
"Well... I dunno. It's hard to talk in front of him. But I think
I've made a little progress. I mean, I've made friends...
haven't gone insane yet... you know, the usual." She gave a
small laugh. "He's trying to get me to trust people more... it's
hard to do. I mean..." She paused, something occurring to her.
"Is it always hard to know when to trust people?" she asked,
cautiously. She really needed an answer. She would talk to
Yukito to get it, too. Then she bit her lip. Was it bad that she
felt more comfortable with Yukito than with Dr. Spenser?
Yukito looked up at her, a bit of surprise on his face, then
       suddenly morphing into a half-grimace. “Hahaha...I think I'm the
worst person to ask that, Zinnia.”
She looked up at him, sidetracked. "Why?"
He pushed his palms down on the counter, stretching his back as
he thought. “I don't think it ever gets easy to trust people.
Because people change. And the way I see it, many of us walk
around, frustrated, because in the end, you are you, and I am
me, and even if we were to tell each other everything, right
now, and always, you would still be contained in your own body
and mind, and I would be contained in mine. So I really don't
know if two people can ever completely trust each other.” He
stopped, frowned, then added quietly, “But I really hope I'm
       proven wrong.”
"But... then how do people trust? What about married couples,
are you saying they stop trusting each other at some point and
just hope the other will still be faithful? That seems like a
rotten way to live." Now she was just confused.
And if anyone knew every last detail about me, I'd probably be
kicked out of this school faster than the blink of an eye...
Maybe she should leave, if that was the only way that anybody
could ever trust... But she didn't want to leave. The school was
the first place she'd felt comfortable since she met Dox. And
she still wasn't entirely comfortable with Dox. The fencing
       fiasco had proved that.

       Yukito Ramsey
"Is it always hard to know when to trust people?" He was
surprised at the question. Surprised because it had been a
question he himself had asked numerous times, although he didn't
think he had ever verbalized it to someone else.
Yukito looked up at her with a mixture of amusement and
bemusement. “Hahaha...I think I'm the worst person to ask that,
       Zinnia.”
She sent him a look. "Why?"
He watched her for a moment, trying to figure out if she was
making fun of him or if she was genuinely unaware. Because I
       don't trust anybody.
But she was waiting for an answer to her question. Yukito
considered the words he needed as he stretched cat-like on the
counter.
That seems like a
rotten way to live." She was like a lost puppy that couldn't
find the doorway outside, even though it was just in front of
       her.
"The point is, it hurts to trust. It's hard because eventually,
someone's going to betray you, and hit you right where it hurts.
But you can't really do anything about that. Even if you try to
lock yourself away, nobody wants to die alone. So we make
relationships, and we get closer to people. But even if we reach
out and touch someone.." Yukito slowed, reaching his hand across
the counter and laying his own on hers, the human hand. The
motion was an odd one for him, and it felt really awkward and
out of place, but he didn't move his hand, looking up into her
face to prove his point. "You're stuck in your body, and I'm
stuck with mine. So how do we change that? It's something
       indescribable. I think it's called love. And I don't think it's
something you can make stop or go, but it's something you can
nourish. Like one of your trees that you like. If it's fed and
watered, it grows to the point where it's very strong and
self-sufficient. If a disaster strikes, then of course it's put
into jeopardy. And maybe you die, and maybe you don't." He stood
up straighter, shrugging and pulling his hand away from her.
"It's never easy to trust. But we do it anyway. Because we're
human, and we need other people to remember us when we're gone.
To die without having reached out to someone...I think that
       would be the most rotten."

"The point is, it hurts to trust. It's hard because eventually,

from having lost her family... "But you can't really do anything
about that. Even if you try to lock yourself away, nobody wants

"Ok..." She still didn't quite get what he was saying, but she
got the gist of it.... That trust wasn't easy, ever. Because
people could hurt you with it, fake it. She looked at the
ground. She'd been hurt, lost the ones she'd loved, and she had
still come out the other side able to trust... after a while.
Maybe it wasn't such a bad thing...
"Well, I guess I'm done... I should go, I... I need to get my
homework done." Her eyes dropped. She knew she would have to
work on trusting people, but love was another thing entirely.
"If... if you ever need to talk, I'm always available..." Her
awkward try at opening trust was terrible, and she felt her face
       get a little heated.

"Ok..." It wasn't exactly a response one would expect or look
forward to, but Yukito didn't really have much in the way of
expectations to be bothered by it. After all, you were saying
       some strange things, Yukito..
"Well, I guess I'm done... I should go, I... I need to get my
homework done." Yukito wondered again what it was that was so
wrong that he wasn't picking up on. She refused to look at him,
and he began to suspect she had come here for more than to drop
off a jacket. But before he could think to ask she added, "If...
if you ever need to talk, I'm always available..."
Yukito's brows furrowed slightly. He wasn't sure what had made
her say such a thing. Had he seemed in need of her help? Did she
suspect something? He couldn't fathom what had prompted her
words, but he nodded anyways. "The same for you, Zinnia." He
followed her to the door, holding it open for her while she
exited. "Thank you for bringing the jacket. And for putting up
with my cooking." The last comment brought a small, but genuine,
       smile to his face.

       Zinnia Natter
"If... if you ever need to talk, I'm always available..." Her
awkward attempt at opening the door for trust was awkward and
flopped on the table between them. She felt her face heat up,
and her eyes dropped. She avoided Yukito's eyes as she got up
       and headed to the door.
"The same for you, Zinnia." He followed her to the door, holding
it open for her while she exited. "Thank you for bringing the
jacket. And for putting up with my cooking." The last comment
made her smile, just a little bit.
"It wasn't that bad. And thanks for the food." she mumbled, but
didn't stop moving. She needed the privacy of her own place to
think, and she could feel herself start to tremble with the
pent-up energy that was starting to flow through her veins.
Why is leaving stressing me out? she thought. It's not like
company is better than being alone... Because when she was
alone, she didn't have to worry about who was going to get hurt
if she panicked. Well, I guess I've got something to at least
       TELL Dr. Spenser... maybe...
She waved goodbye to Yukito, and headed out into the street,
still unable to fully meet his eyes.
How could such a sweet young man have ever fallen into Hal's
relation? It doesn't seem right to me...
Zinnia has left the Ramsey's Residence
