       Zinnia Natter
Zinnia walked up to the door nervously, fiddling with her
sweater a couple of times, and then sighing when her lanyard
with keys fell out of her pocket. She could never wear it
comfortably around her neck, but she couldn't ever get them to
       stay in her pocket either.
After picking up her keys and looping them through a belt loop,
she stuffed the keys themselves into her pocket. She hated
making unnecessary noise, especially when she hadn't planned on
making an outing. She hoped Yukito didn't mind her dropping by
in the early afternoon, but she figured Hal wouldn't be home
until much later so she wouldn't have to face him.
And she needed to return Yukito's jacket. She switched the arm
it was on, knocking on what she hoped was the front door with
her left hand, then taking a nervous step back. She swallowed a
couple of times, waiting for the door to open.
She couldn't decide what to do with her free arm, now that she'd
knocked. Should she stick it back in her pocket? Why the hell
was she even worrying about that? She ended up gripping the
       sweatshirt with both hands.

The house, as usual, was as silent as the dead. Yukito woke up
to the sound of a knock on the door. Still yawning, he wandered
out of his room and toward the front door, pausing to check a
note that Hal had left on the kitchen counter. The blue ink line
was thick and heavily scribbled, but somehow still legible to
       Yukito.
       Yukito,
I understand you are still upset with me. I know money cannot
buy your happiness, son, but perhaps this can buy a little bit
more time for you and I to see eye-to-eye.
I know you have been following this band. I hope you won't mind
if your embarrassing, harassing father goes with you.
If it would truly be a burden on you, you may take your friend
Reese with you. But I would like this opportunity to see things
       from your perspective.
       Take your time,
       Hal
The note made him stop in his tracks, confused. Two concert
tickets were stuck underneath the note, as a sort of silent
apology. He raised a hand to his chest, feeling that strange
constriction there and the lack of air, like he was being
strangled slowly from the inside. What did he mean? Why was he
suddenly trying so hard to 'connect'? Yukito sighed, deciding to
deal with it later. He ran a hand through his hair, ruffling it,
still drowsy from the nap he had fallen into as soon as he got
back from school that afternoon. Yukito figured it was just a
delivery man or someone to fix the stupid whining noise that had
been coming from their air conditioner the last few weeks. It
had been driving Hal crazy, even moreso once he had gotten to
New York and away from it for a substantial amount of time.
In his bleary-eyed thoughts, the last person he expected on his
step was Zinnia. Yukito actually did a double take hen he saw
her, suddenly feeling quite unprepared to accept guests.
"Uh...Hi.." he crossed his arms over his chest, trying to look
less surprised by her appearance. "Long time no see...thanks for
helping with Maechan, by the way.."

       Zinnia Natter
After she knocked, she waited, hoping that someone had heard it.
Although maybe nobody was home... She glanced back to the
sidewalk, half-intending to leave if the door wasn't answered
soon. But after she glanced back at the jacket she held, she
       sighed. She would wait.
Finally the door was opened by a drowsy-looking Yukito, wearing
a white tank top and a pair of loose-fitting striped pajama
pants. He was clearly surprised to see her.
"Uh...Hi.." He crossed his arms, his expression of surprise
slowly fading. "Long time no see...thanks for helping with
       Maechan, by the way."
"Oh, you're welcome. Erin came by, too. Uh, you left your jacket
with me after the dinner, and then you left. I'm sorry for the
delay in getting it back to you." She held out the jacket, and
her stomach grumbled loudly. She tried to fake a short cough
into her shoulder to cover it, but wasn't sure how well she'd
succeeded. She hadn't eaten much for lunch and hadn't had a
chance to snack much when she decided to bring the jacket over.
Stupid, stupid, stupid, she thought to herself. But oh well.
She'd eat when she got back home.
       "I hope I didn't interrupt a nap or anything."

       Yukito Maki
The note was left neglected on the counter, the two freshly
printed concert tickets tucked neatly next to it. Yukito went to
open the door, still yawning and bleary-eyed from his nap. When
he opened the door to find Zinnia there, he felt embarrassed,
crossing his arms over his chest instinctively "Uh...Hi...Long
time no see...thanks for helping with Maechan, by the way." What
could Zinnia want to come over for? Did something happen? He
watched her face carefully, trying to read her expression.
"Oh, you're welcome. Erin came by, too. Uh, you left your jacket
with me after the dinner, and then you left. I'm sorry for the
delay in getting it back to you." He had completely forgotten
about the jacket until she held it out to him. Quietly, he
stepped forward, taking the jacket with a deep nod of his head.
By automation, Yukito noticed he would often try to bow in
thanks to people. But here, it seemed to make others
uncomfortable, so he tried to settle for a sinking nod instead.
Nothing too obvious. But it was hard to go against such an
instinct. He held the jacket in front of him, the sleeves
wrapped tightly around his arms, when the sound of Zinnia's
stomach growling interjected between them like a sudden
exclamation point. Yukito wasn't sure whether or not to ignore
it, as Zinnia tried to pretend it didn't happen. "I hope I
didn't interrupt a nap or anything."
"No...no, it's fine. Hal would have called to wake me up soon
anyways. Um..." He shifted from foot to foot, then stepped
aside, gesturing toward the house with a movement of his head,
"Do you...want to come in for a bit? I can get you something to
       eat, if you like..."
"It's no big deal, I should eat anyways," he said reassuringly,
stepping inside and waving her in. His tennis shoes from school
were still by the door, their backs bent from the way he had
stepped out of them. The house was as clean and meticulous and
cold as usual, with no sign of current life safe for the note on
the counter, which Yukito passed by without a glance. Opening
the fridge, he frowned, "There's not really much here. We need
to go shopping.." He searched one of the cupboards, pulling out
a box of macaroni and cheese. It should be simple enough, right?
He'd only made it once before, though, and really, he had just
waited and let Reese do all the work. Reese hadn't noticed that
he was doing it, of course. "How's this?" he asked, holding out
the box, one hand reaching into the cupboard for a small pot. He
filled the pot almost all the way with water, turning the heat
on full blast, then turning to Zinnia. "There is also stuff for
sandwiches, if you want one. It's really the only thing I can
       make.."

       Zinnia Natter
She held the jacket out to him, hoping he would take it quickly.
She felt sort of awkward standing there, uninvited... It was
unnerving. Quietly, he stepped out and took the jacket with a
       deep nod of his head.
"I hope I didn't interrupt a nap or anything." she said,
glancing down at Yukito's pajamas again, and then trying to
cover up her stomach growling. She hoped he didn't notice it,
but it was practically silent otherwise.
"No...no, it's fine. Hal would have called to wake me up soon
anyways. Um..." He shifted from foot to foot, then stepped
aside, gesturing toward the house with his head, "Do you...want
to come in for a bit? I can get you something to eat, if you
       like..."
       She paused.
"It's no big deal, I should eat anyways," he said reassuringly,
stepping inside and waving her in.
       "Ok..."
She hesitated one moment more, but her stomach threatened to
growl once more, so she followed him in, kicking her shoes off
at the door, right next to his, which looked like he'd hardly
been home for any length of time, the backs of his shoes bent
slightly inwards. She looked around at the inside of the house,
which somewhat surprised her. As quiet as Yukito was, he hadn't
struck her as the obsessively clean and neat type at all. But
then, she didn't know him very well either....
Yukito had opened the fridge, and frowned. "There's not really
much here. We need to go shopping.."
Zinnia almost offered to leave, but he had already started
searching one of the cupboards, finally pulling out a box of
       macaroni and cheese.
"How's this?" he asked, holding out the box, one hand reaching
into the cupboard for a small pot. He filled the pot almost all
the way with water, turning the heat on full blast, then turning
to Zinnia. "There is also stuff for sandwiches, if you want one.
It's really the only thing I can make.."
"No, no, that's fine." Her reply was quiet, but clear. She tried
to smile. Relax, Zinnia, she told herself, It's ok to enjoy
visiting other people, remember? Dr. Spenser was trying to get
her to spend less time alone, and more time with other people.
So far it hadn't really worked, but this would be the perfect
       opportunity to try.
No talking about enhancements this time, or Hal. Stay on a more
neutral topic... She glanced around the kitchen, watching Yukito
start making the meal, eyes wandering around the rest of the
room. Her eyes fell on a few slips of paper with a note stuck on
top. She looked at the writing, but couldn't really make
anything out. She shrugged--it probably wasn't that important,
right?-- and moved farther inside, inspecting the rest of the
       kitchen quietly.
"What is this?" she asked, holding up a contraption she hadn't
seen much of before. It was an oval pot, deep, with a plastic
lid that fit inside the rim. It had a plug coming out of one
end, and a small knob on the front. Four small plastic legs
extended from the corners, so that the bottom was slightly
elevated. "I've never seen anything like that before..."
Although sort of a lie, she really couldn't remember what it was
for. And she wanted to start some sort of conversation.

"No, no, that's fine." She seemed very quiet and out of place,
not as open or talkative as she had been the last time he'd seen
her. Yukito wondered if it was because she was at his house, or
if something had changed between them. "What is this?" she
asked, and he turned to see what she was holding up.
“Eh...” he couldn't keep the surprised look from his face. “Just
       a rice cooker..”
"I've never seen anything like that before..."
“Really?” he arched an eyebrow, bending down to the counter
until most of his torso was splayed across it, leaning heavily
on his elbows as he moved the rice cooker towards him. He opened
up the little glass lid, “You just take this little cup and
measure out your rice, your water, then put the lid back on and
plug it in..” he closed it, then pushed the little lever on the
front, “And push this down for 'cook'. When it's done, it pops
       up and it's 'warm'.”
He left the rice cooker sitting on the counter, resting his chin
in the palms of his hands as he looked over at her, a
contemplative look on his face. “It's not what you expected,
       right? The house...”

He put the rice cooker back on the counter, then looked at her,
saying nothing for a little bit. She blushed slightly. Being
watched like that sort of embarrassed her, like she'd done
       something wrong.
“It's not what you expected, right? The house...”
Oh, just that. She smiled, relieved. "No, not really... I mean,
I didn't know what to expect, but, somehow this wasn't it... I
mean, I like the neatness, but this doesn't exactly feel like...
well, it doesn't seem like you, for some reason. I dunno."
She looked down at her hands nervously. It had been awhile since
she'd been in anyone elses house but her own or Dox's fencing
loft, and she had no idea how the social structure was built
up........ She'd just keep her space, that's all.
And she'd have something to tell Dr. Spenser, too.... Although
maybe she'd leave the specifics out of it.

"I've never seen anything like that before..."

leaned his body on top of the counter until he was within reach,
taking rice cooker and demonstrating for her.
He opened up the little glass lid, “You just take this little

       pops up and it's 'warm'.”
"That's... that's really cool..." She smiled a little bit. He
lifted on shoulder, unsure what was so fascinating about such a
       - in his mind - common object. But to each their own.
He put the rice cooker back on the counter, leaning his chin in
his palms and watching her. He tried to see if there was
something bothering her, and only saw that she was uncomfortable
in some way. He couldn't think of anything he had said or done
to make her feel strange. There was, of course, the possibility
that people had started rumors at school, and he just hadn't
noticed. Perhaps someone saw him walk Zinnia home, and had
started saying things. In that case, she could have just avoided
him until the stories faded, instead of coming over to his
house. It was all strange. She seemed to be inspecting the
house, though. Yukito's interest was piqued at that. Hal had
already acquire certain habits and a sense of decor before
Yukito's surgery, and there were no compromises on the shared
portions of the house in the slightest. As it was, he had had to
fight for the right to choose what his own room looked like, and
it was a constant topic of intense debate between the two. He
thought back to one of the first comments Natalie had made when
she saw the place. That it hadn't been what she'd imagined at
       all.
“It's not what you expected, right? The house...”
She smiled, seeming a little embarrassed. "No, not really... I
mean, I didn't know what to expect, but, somehow this wasn't

like... well, it doesn't seem like you, for some reason. I

She looked down at her hands, and Yukito tilted his head a
little to the side, his expression as curious as a small dog
that has heard an unfamiliar sound. A little smile made its way
across his face. "That's because it's not. I'm barely allowed to
sit on the furniture out here. My room is over there," he
indicated with a nod of his head. "And it's more like a junkyard
       compared to out here."

       Zinnia Natter
"That's... that's really cool..." She smiled a little bit. Maybe
I should get one sometime soon...
He lifted the rice cooker out of her hands and put it back on
the counter, watching her. It only made her a little
uncomfortable, but she did sort of want him to say something...
just sitting there was getting awkward. And the strangeness of
the house was making it a little worse.
“It's not what you expected, right? The house...”
She smiled, a little flustered that he'd half read her mind.
"No, not really... I mean, I didn't know what to expect, but,
somehow this wasn't it... I mean, I like the neatness, but this
doesn't exactly feel like... well, it doesn't seem like you, for
       some reason. I dunno."
She looked down at her hands, wishing she could actually say
what she wanted to when asked. That was the other thing her and
Dr. Spenser were working on-- taking enough time to answer
questions that she said what she wanted to without stuttering or
having too much extraneous details. Out of the corner of her
eye, she saw Yukito tilt his head a little to the side, like
something about her was confusing him, but then a small smile
twitched its way across his face.
"That's because it's not. I'm barely allowed to sit on the
furniture out here. My room is over there," he indicated with a
nod of his head. "And it's more like a junkyard compared to out
       here."
"Ah. That sounds a little more like a teenage guy." She smiled,
somewhat relieved that there WAS something normal about at least
one person here at the academy. "Hal doesn't like mess, or
something?" She looked up at Yukito, her smile keeping it's
place. It was very clear Hal didn't like mess. The kitchen and
living room were spotless, almost entirely.

       Yukito Ramsey
“It's not what you expected, right? The house...”
She smiled, "No, not really... I mean, I didn't know what to
expect, but, somehow this wasn't it... I mean, I like the
neatness, but this doesn't exactly feel like... well, it doesn't
seem like you, for some reason. I dunno." Her eyes flickered
away, and Yukito tilted his head at her curiously, unsure if he
had made her comfortable or if she was just naturally this way.
He just found it interesting, the way people reacted to seeing
Yukito in this environment, as if he didn't belong here. Even
though he spent the majority of his time in between these walls,
it still felt foreign to him, in many ways.
"That's because it's not. I'm barely allowed to sit on the
furniture out here. My room is over there," he indicated with a
nod of his head. "And it's more like a junkyard compared to out

"Ah. That sounds a little more like a teenage guy." She smiled
again, more easily this time. "Hal doesn't like mess, or
something?" Yukito pressed his lips together in a little pout as
he considered that, his eyes shifting slowly around the room as
he tried to take in the house with the sort of perspective
Zinnia must have seen it from.
"Hal is a very organized person. He likes everything in its
proper place." And I don't feel like I'm something that's in its
proper place, and I guess my room reflects that.
"Do you want to see it?" he asked offhandedly, since she seemed
so curious about whether or not he was a 'normal' teenage guy.
Walking over to the door, he pushed it open with one hand,
revealing the walls coated in rock posters, the discarded
clothes and crumpled papers that littered the floor, along with
several novels he was currently working his way through. His
closed laptop was also pulled onto the unmade bed, where he had
been checking his email before his nap. "It's nothing special,
       really."
While they were looking into the room, Yukito heard a hissing
noise. Turning back toward the stove, he found that their pot of
boiling water was beginning to overflow.
"くそ!" Yukito rushed over, turning it down
and lifting it above the surface of the stove for a moment,
until the water started to calm. After a few minutes, he was
able to set it back down without the rapid boil returning, and
he dumped the noodles into the pot. Looking around, he realized
he hadn't brought out anything to stir it with. By the time he
got a spoon, the noodles were already starting to clump
together, and he cursed multiple times under his breath, trying
to salvage it. "No one believes me when I say I can't cook.."
