The science lab is a massive room used for various subjects
throughout the day: forensics, physics, chemistry, anatomy,
biology, robotics... When empty, it doesn't look like much
science occurs in the room, but once filled with students, the
microscopes, Bunsen burners, and scalpels come out. A cabinet at
the far end of the room contains the safety equipment: lab
coats, goggles, gloves, fire extinguishers... Students are
required to don all the appropriate safety wear when performing
experiments. Another shelf contains rows and rows of various
chemicals, carefully contained. On the opposite side of the
room, in a different though clearly labeled cabinet, rest
various biological specimens for classes' usage. Robotic parts
and pieces of computer bits are stored away in boxes in a corner
closet. Posters on the importance of safety and on the
scientific method are on the walls, but other than that, it's
not in the way for much decore.

OOC: Interaction planned here with Daniel/Erin! BIC:
       Daniel Middleton
He hadn't even gotten through a whole class, and Daniel could
already tell that this was going to be a tough semester.
Transferring into a new school was always tough in and of
itself, but gosh. Daniel had been prepared for that horrid "new
kid" feeling, but not the overwhelming feeling of listening
really hard to a lecture for 30 minutes and literally not
understanding a word of it. I thought this school was for kids
going through surgery, not for super-brains! What am I gonna
do?! I can't handle this stuff!
Daniel spent most of the lecture switching between feeling very
sorry for himself and trying his best to be positive. Maybe they
would cut him some slack, since he was the new Enhancement kid.
That still didn't mean he would have any friends. At least he
knew one or two of the people who had transferred here last
year, when Dr. Ramsey was searching for new recruits (or "fresh
meat", as some of his peers had been saying).
       "Daniel? Did you hear me?"
The boy nearly jumped out of his skin, the pencil he had been
tapping against the notepad he had brought for notes. Flying out
of his grasp, the edge of the pencil bounced against the edge of
the table, flipping over several times and hitting his teacher's
       shoulder. "S-sorry..."
The teacher began to frown, but decided to brush it off, waving
him toward a girl who was sitting in the seat next to him. "You
need to pair up for the next outside of class project. Please
take this time to consult with your partner about different
possible research projects that you would like to undertake
together. And remember," the teacher now sent a meaningful look
to the remainder of the class, "This isn't just busywork. Your
research could very well be taken into direct account by the
surgeons working tirelessly here at the Academy, so I want you
to consider this a true investment of your time." He send an
encouraging nod toward Daniel and his new partner, "Please do
       your best."
As soon as the teacher turned and walked toward one of the
corners of the room, a buzz of conversation ignited in the room
like someone had just lit off a firecracker that fizzled and
popped in excitement. Daniel turned to the girl next to him, a
pretty brunette who looked friendly enough, and sent her a
little smile, "Uh...hi. I'm Daniel. Nice to meet you."

       Erin Spenser
There were so many other things in the world to be doing right
now. So many better things than being free labor and/or lab
rats. Sure, Enhancements had down sides, but why did it have to
be a downside she had to put up with five days a week, eight
hours a day? She sent a frown at her teacher that he didn't seem
to bother to notice. Erin wrinkled her nose playfully, making a
face as their teacher directed his attention to the guy who'd
       sat down next to her.
"You need to pair up for the next outside of class project.
Please take this time to consult with your partner about
different possible research projects that you would like to
undertake together. And remember," the teacher now sent a
meaningful look to the remainder of the class, "This isn't just
busywork. Your research could very well be taken into direct
account by the surgeons working tirelessly here at the Academy,
so I want you to consider this a true investment of your time."
He gave a nod in their direction, and Erin gave a little shrug
and smile in return. "Please do your best."
Erin raised her eyebrows dubiously, unable to surpress a giggle.
As the teacher moved a bit away, she "called after," "Right, the
surgeons really wanna use high schoolers' half-baked work for
actual science stuff." She sent a look to her apparent partner
       like, "Am I right?"
The guy gave a little smile, kind of shy, maybe? "Uh...hi. I'm
       Daniel. Nice to meet you."
Erin smiled, though hers wasn't a shy one. "Hi! I'm Erin, and I
am not a science person." Then she tacked on, "Well, unless it's
just looking at awesome pictures of the moon or stars or
something. That's okay, because it's not actually science. It's
       art!"
She paused, flipped through the handouts they'd been given.
"Okay, so, we need to get some litmus paper and-- Okay, no, I
swear if I have to spit on litmus paper to test my pH, I'm so
done with this school." She really wasn't, and hopefully Daniel
picked up on her dumb joke, but the idea of testing human pH
levels did kind of creep her out. Erin shoved the papers in his
direction. "Hey, did I read it wrong? Or are we about to have a
spitting contest?" She couldn't help but laugh at the idea, even
if she was wrong about it.

       Daniel Middleton
He could already tell that his partner was one of girls that was
always laughing about something, even if it was something silly
like a science project. She teased aloud that there was no way
that a bunch of teenagers messing around in a lab would be taken
seriously by any real scientists, and Daniel had to agree. The
idea that someone could need and use one of his own experiments
for future work was a complete impossibility - but the idea of
it made it hard not to smile.
"Hi! I'm Erin, and I am not a science person." It was a clear
declaration that he shouldn't expect too much work from her.
Daniel shrugged and sent her another smile, looking down at
their instruction sheet. He wasn't exactly a genius, himself.
"Well, unless it's just looking at awesome pictures of the moon
or stars or something. That's okay, because it's not actually
       science. It's art!"
Too shy to say anything witty or funny, Daniel gave a little
"hmm" sound to let her know he had heard her. Then, they
promptly turned to look through their handouts. I wish I could
say something to her that would make her laugh.. he thought
vaguely, trying to focus on his work.
"Okay, so, we need to get some litmus paper and-- Okay, no, I
swear if I have to spit on litmus paper to test my pH, I'm so
done with this school." Erin pushed the papers towards him. He
hoped she didn't mistake his shy nature as an indication that he
was the quiet nerd in the class. "Hey, did I read it wrong? Or
are we about to have a spitting contest?" She laughed at the
idea, and he smiled while taking the papers. Daniel tried to
decipher what the instructions were asking, but he couldn't make
heads or tails out of the complicated wording. His brow
furrowed, and he felt like he was being stared at and judged.
I'm such an idiot...I can't even read the instructions right.
Sorry, Erin. I'm probably the least helpful partner you could
       get in here.
He was determined to try, however. "It does say we will probably
need litmus paper for the project, but it doesn't say anything
about spitting..wouldn't it be called something science-y like
'saliva sample' or something? But..." his lip protruded slightly
in a confused frown, "It seems like the only kind of experiments
we could do in here that would be helpful or useful at all would
have to involve humans, of course. What if we chose something
specific to test an element that is going to be used in
somebody's Enhancement?" He shrugged, unsure of himself as soon
as he had spoken, but glad that he had, in the end.

       Erin Spenser
Okay, so new kid was either really not interested in talking
with her, or he was super shy. It was hard to tell. Well, she'd
find out sooner or later, right? Erin glanced at the
instructions they'd been given... it was hard for her to take
this particular class seriously. It always struck her as kind of
sketch. Granted, she knew the "quality of education" was better
here than she'd gotten elsewhere, but really, they were kids who
cared more about what they were eating for lunch then how the pH
level of their skin changed with their Enhancements. At least,
       that's how Erin saw it.
Daniel seemed to think differently. Well, maybe that meant they
could actually turn in something good. Because it was a lot
harder to turn in quality work when you didn't give a care.
"It does say we will probably need litmus paper for the project,
but it doesn't say anything about spitting..wouldn't it be
called something science-y like 'saliva sample' or something?
But..." Erin shrugged. Daniel continued, "It seems like the
only kind of experiments we could do in here that would be

course. What if we chose something specific to test an element

shrugged, and Erin felt a smile growing on her face.
"That... sounds really impressive and science-y." She nodded her
approval, a little laugh escaping. "Buuuut... I dunno really
what that would be... like... could we test heat resistance or
something? How would you even do something like that?" Her voice
lowered, and she added, "Plus, isn't that what all the
researchers are supposed to do? It feels like they're just using
us as free labor and slapping a grade on it to call it
school...." Erin's nose wrinkled at the thought, as though the
       idea itself reeked.

"That... sounds really impressive and science-y." She nodded her
approval, a little laugh escaping. Daniel couldn't help but
smile. She had a very cute laugh. "Buuuut... I dunno really what

Daniel just gave a helpless shrug, replying in a voice just as
quiet, "To be honest, I don't understand any of this stuff..I
just got here, like, yesterday. Heh...and I'm already lost. It
feels like the end of The Shining to me." He giggled, a little
snort escaping him. The teacher sent them a warning look, and
Daniel couldn't hide his guilt-ridden face. Despite his
embarrassment, he whispered to Erin, "If it was making a cake, I
could do it, but...science is so confusing..I need a recipe to
follow. You know, 'Step one, mix one pound of science with three
       tablespoons math...or something."
He let out a sigh, tilting his head to the side and looking
again at their instructions. "What about that stuff they make
mood rings out of? Doesn't it react to heat and cold pretty
obviously? We could test temperatures on that or something...? I
       really dunno.."

Daniel just shrugged. "To be honest, I don't understand any of

already lost. It feels like the end of The Shining to me."
At the mention of the old movie, Erin gasped, covering her mouth
with one hand. "Omigod, you've actually watched that? It's so
scary!" She laughed loudly, then lowered her voice back down
after looking about the classroom. It was easy to forget when
you're too loud... "Eh, I mean... like, no one here has seen
anything from before 2000, so... y'know..." She rolled her eyes,
hoping he'd get her meaning. Really, it was kind of impressive.
At least, it was to Erin.
"If it was making a cake, I could do it, but...science is so
confusing..I need a recipe to follow. You know, 'Step one, mix
one pound of science with three tablespoons math...or
       something."
"Aaaah, I know, right?" Erin turned to look at Daniel more
closely now. "Me, too! It's so much easier that way. And you can
substitute. But no-- if you try to substitute here, they're
all," She switched into an exaggerated, deep voice: "'Erin, a
picture of a ninja will not protect you from getting a D.' And
I'm like, "Haters.'" She couldn't help but laugh more... though
she did try to be quieter about it this time around. Really, it
was more frustrating than she let on, but Daniel didn't need to
       know all that mess.
He let out a sigh, tilting his head to the side and looking
again at their instructions. "What about that stuff they make

The idea struck Erin. "Hm? What is that stuff, anyway? Just heat
sensing stuff, yeah. But what would that do? They want stuff for
people.... Oh! What about sound waves? We could measure how
sound waves affect solid objects.... then they'd be like, 'okay,
sweet, now we can give someone supersonic sound wave powers,
thanks, kids! As a reward, you won't have to die today. Run
       along!'"
She started pulling out equipment from the cabinets she figured
they'd need. Meanwhile, Erin asked, "So, what's your
enhancement, Daniel? Since you're new, I'm guessing you just got
       it?"

more subdued this time. Daniel had to chuckle, mostly at her
attempt at a deep, intimidating voice.
He let out a sigh, tilting his head to the side and looking

nod, wordlessly following her lead. She rushed over and started
pulling out things they might need for the experiment, and he
fumbled through helping as much as he could. "So, what's your
enhancement, Daniel? Since you're new, I'm guessing you just got

"Um...actually, I'm still going through some tests. Apparently

like a bajillion things and stuff...I'm bruised from head to toe
from all the blood they've taken and the muscle tests and stuff,
and--" he went for litmus paper, and accidentally knocked over a
stack of metal trays that were in one of the shelves. The pile
of trays came crashing to the floor with a sound like a herd of
elephants. Daniel stood, tensed, both eyes clenched shut. He
didn't want to see everyone staring at him. You idiot.. Finally,
once the crashing had descended into an awkward silence, Daniel
opened one eye. "Sorry..." He bent to pick up the trays,
       mumbling, "I'm always so clumsy.."
"Um..yeah. But I'm not sure what mine will be quite yet. They
don't talk to me about it too much, which really bugs my mom.."
he shrugged, "What's your Enhancement?" He looked up to meet her
eyes. He figured, since she had so casually asked him, that it
was okay to ask that kind of a question. Like, it didn't make
people awkward here to talk about. Or at least, he hoped not. "I
bet you got something really cool, huh?"

into a wince. "Holy crap, owwww...."
"Sorry..." Daniel said quietly, as Erin rubbed the back of her

"So, you don't have any idea what you might get? Jeez.... like,

completely calm his nervousness. He tried to smile back at her,
       however.
"Um..yeah. But I'm not sure what mine will be quite yet. They
don't talk to me about it too much, which really bugs my mom.."
He shrugged, back on topic of Enhancements. "What's your
Enhancement? I bet you got something really cool, huh?"
Erin sent him a smile. "Yeah, I'm basically your local real-life
mermaid," she told him, half-joking and half-proud. "I mean, I
don't have scales or anything, because... creepy. But my lungs
do work underwater. It's pretty cool."
Daniel's eyes widened, and his mouth dropped open. "Wow..that is
really cool! You could just live out in the water, become best
friends with your own flounder.." Daniel let out a giggle,
realizing he sounded like a little kid. You're in high school
now, moron. You could try to be a little cooler. "I mean..I hope
my Enhancement is half as cool as that.."
"So, you don't have any idea what you might get? Jeez.... like,
we had in-depth conversations about which ones would work for
me, and I got to at least say like, 'yeah, that sounds cool' or
'no, that one's not what I'd want.' I'd hate not knowing!"
He raised his hand and rubbed at the back of his neck somewhat
nervously, letting out a chuckle. "Eh, well..they've talked
about several different ones, but... I have no idea what I'm
going to get...because Dr. Ramsey says I'm not very suitable for
many of the Enhancements available, and he wants to try for more
complex ones.. But hopefully I can get the final say. I'm not
good at decisions, though..is there a cake-making Enhancement,
or a not-so-clumsy Enhancement?" He smiled.
