Ithilwin locked eyes with the majestic beast but kept low. She
crouched and leaned forward as if bowing to greet the unicorn.
Upon seeing the unicorn lean its head down, bending a knee to
her level, Ithilwin reached out her hand her palm facing up and
waited patiently.

"Don't be shy. He won't bite. " Loren chuckled to himself "He'll
stab you though." Loren got close the unicorn again and leaned
in to whisper in its ear "Be a gentleman and take the lady's
hand."

The unicorn nuzzled into Ithilwin's hand and she brushed her
hand along its face. She smiled and stood slowly to reach up by
its ears and run her fingers through its mane. It pawed at the
ground with its hoof and let out a small neigh in approval.
Ithilwin couldn't stop smiling and looked at Loren. "I wonder if
this means if I am pure or not," she giggled. "Guren glassui!
(My heart is glad!)"

"Maybe he's as bewildered by your eyes as I am." Loren blurted
out before thinking only realising what he'd said afterwards.
Another awkward silence fell. "uh, Kurnous go and find the
others. They can't get too far." Kurnours flitted off into the
woods to go find the other unicorns. Loren assumed he'd get a
question and decided to answer it beforehand "Kurnous is a very
rare creature. My father found the little thing when he was
still Master Scout. When I was a babe he laid Kurnous next to me
as I slept and since then Kurnous has been with me always. His
kind are said to be the embodiment of the forest and have a way
of talking to all creatures. He's my oldest" Loren paused and
sighed slightly "and only friend." Loren dipped his head down,
contemplating the words he'd spoken. "Anyway, how's your new
friend?"

While Loren was talking, Ithilwin had managed to climb onto the
back of the unicorn and was leaning forward hugging it by the
neck. "I think we're doing just fine," she said, looking down at
Loren. Her smile couldn't get any larger when she saw his rosy
cheeks. Ithilwin heard exactly what he said and it didn't go
unnoticed. "I am curious to know what it looks like through her
eyes. I mean really you should see how close we have become. She
let me climb onto her back." She paused for a moment before
continuing, "Kurnous seems like a wonderful companion. How is it
a brave scout of the forest, who is so loyal to family, without
any friends?"

Loren lost his smile. "I uh, well when I started to become a
Scout through the training and testing my then-friends felt that
my father would look favourably upon me and they just distanced
themselves from me. The real joke is that I was tested more and
much harder. Every time I failed my mentor would ask me if I
wanted to quit but I didn't and here I am. I don't leave my area
of the forest much at all. Any messages I send with a bird and
so it's been me and Kurnous for a long time now. I've probably
spoken to humans more than Elves." The noise of approaching
hooves could start to be heard, "Good boy Kurnous" Loren said
quietly. "Well seeing as you're very comfortable with your
steed, how about I get my own and we take a walk?"

Ithilwin's brow furled and she frowned. "That sounds unfair,
honestly. They must not be true friends if they leave you."
Ithilwin put one leg on either side of the unicorn and patted
her on the neck. "A walk sounds lovely. I think I want to name
her. What do you think?"

Loren smiled mischievously , "If you name it, you're going to
have to come back and take care of it." Loren turned and
whistled to one of the unicorn which Kurnous was already sitting
on, except Kurnous was sitting and gripping on to its horn. oren
swiftly mounted the unicorn, placed his hands on the creatures
neck, closed his eyes and breathed deeply for a few moments.
"Okay" Loren opened his eyes. "We'll want to avoid going too far
south or east and we don't want to go too far west either unless
you want to terrify the humans. I'd suggest we head north."

"Since you've got a name does that mean I have to take care of
you?" Ithilwin retorted and immediately regretted it. In an
attempt to hide her embarrassment she said, "I was thinking of
calling her Serenity. She's so peaceful." She started nudging
Serenity to walk north and turned to make sure Loren was
following. This was the first time in a while she has felt true
freedom. Here in the forest there were no rules except mutual
respect between creature and land. Mist from the water
occasionally brushed her skin when the breeze came through and
carried a wonderful scent of dirt. She never thought the smell
of the earth would stand out this much to her. Something about
it seemed natural. She could smell the bark on the trees and
remembered a time where she would climb them constantly. The
leaves rustled in the branches as birds and squirrels came in
and out of their homes. Ithilwin wasn't sure how to feel. It
felt like she belonged here, but wanted to hate it all the same.

Loren let silence fall between himself and Ithilwin for the most
part, only speaking to adjust their course so that they don't
stray too far. Eventually, after screwing up his courage long
enough, Loren guided his unicorn to match Ithilwin and Serenity
and they walked side by side. "You know -" Loren looked at
Ithilwin, giving himself one last think about what he was going
to say, "You can stay with me - or us, right Kurnous? At least
stay long enough to give yourself time to think and maybe spend
some more time back in the forest. Practice those climbing
skills, huh?" Loren nervously chuckled. "Y-you don't have to, of
course, it's your choice you know it's just an idea I had just
now you know so it's up to you but the offer is there but uh,
yeah, it's uh your choice." Loren's eyes darted nervously,
barely able to make let alone keep eye contact.
