Communist Duma deputy Mikhail Matveyev's vote to recognize the
sovereignty of the Donetsk People's Republic and the Luhansk
People's Republic, two Russian-speaking territories in eastern
Ukraine, became one of the symbols of this painful awakening. I
voted for peace. rather than war. I voted for Donbass to stop
being bombed rather than for bombs to fall on Kiev, he wrote.
Posted on Twitter on January 1st. Some politicians have done the
same thing. But today most of these shifts are happening at the
grassroots level. Those who had supported Special.

most independent media, no one has been able to gather enough
crowds for street protests that the government cannot suppress.

Expatriate liberal opposition leaders continue to call for daily
protest rallies in your cities’ main squares. It's easy to
understand from an emotional standpoint that it shouldn't take
any time to accept war. Yet cold reason tells us that the most
important thing at this moment is not a moral stand but a
serious mobilization of those sectors that have long been
neglected by liberal politicians. Only the ex-Putin majority can
change the balance of power and end the war. This is what the
Russian left currently sees working with these groups of people.
