It sounds like Juan Carlos is starting to regret his decision to
abdicate. He's been quoted as saying he feels he's been
"sidelined" by his family. Here's an article from the Daily
Mail about his appearance at a recent royal event, along with
Flip, Leti, and Sofia. It sounds like he feels he's not getting
credit for things he achieved and he resents it. I think he
should take a hint from Beatrix on how to make a successful
transition from monarch to retired royal. The last thing Spain
needs at the moment is dueling kings.

truth is he's been sidelined, which isn't to say that he should
moan about it. that's the best way to be sidelined again.
difference between him and beatrix is that she willingly
abdicated while his arm's been twisted to do so.

What a selfish entitled old dotard. He abdicated at the very
last second IMO. Another month or two and Spain would have been
a republic.
So the royal family gets jeers, Catalonia wants out, but JC is
throwing a tantrum over recognition. Way to put self over the
country you vowed to serve. Poor Felipe.
And ITA Cara.

Same. Carlos might do well to visit King Henrik to reminicse,
sip wine and eat deer together.

as far as i am concerned, JC deserves both respect and
acknowledgement for how he's led Spain from a dictature to a
democracy and again for keeping Spain on track when there was a
coup attempt in the early 1980s.

I agree that he deserves respect for those accomplishments. But
I also think that he left Felipe a mess and the situation is
still precarious. This won’t help stabilize things.

i personally do not think that he left felipe a mess, but maybe
you mean something different than what i think of!
felipe's task was never going to be easy. it was no secret that
spaniards were not royalists but carlistas. JC was also credited
with being a stabilizing force for the basque and catalan
regions. actually as soon as it was known that JC was stepping
down, there were people on the streets in madrid demanding a
referendum on the monarchy and people on the streets in
barcelona with catalan flags.
the current situation is hardly something i can blame JC from.
that said, i am no spain expert, not following it closely so i
may be missing something.

I think that the circumstances which forced JC to abdicate in
2015 could reasonably be called messy (the elephant hunting trip
and Christina, just to name two). JC can certainly be blamed
for the hunting trip, if not for over-indulging Cristina. The
horrific economic crisis in Spain magnified these things 100
times over. That was not JC’s fault but going on expensive
hunting trips was extremely tone deaf.
In any event, I found this article written at abdication time
which I think pretty fairly sums things up. As you say, Felipe
was never going to have it easy, so why would JC want to make it
harder?
