Another blow for the queen to absorb...and surely the hardest.
Sad, sad news. Now Edward's the Duke of Edinburgh.

I would say the Kent Branch are very upset on the passing of
their cousin as well. He when they were younger was a very
frequent visitor to their home as their mother was first cousin
       with Philip .
Chris , I know there is a plan to make Edward Duke of Edinburgh,
but I don’t know whether Charles has relinquished it back to the
crown , or what way it’s going to work. As the elder son it goes
to Charles for now I think. We’ll see soon enough.

Think about it, the queen loses 7 decades of a husband by her
       side.
She must be devastated. I hope she has plenty of support from
       her family.

You may be right, Tiger. When Edward was made Earl of Wessex,
they announced that it was a subsidiary title of the Dukedom of
Edinburgh and, when his father died, he'd "move up" to that
title. But I never thought about Ed's being a younger son. I
hope he becomes duke...Charles has enough titles attached to him
to sound like a firm of New York lawyers.

I’d love Edward to be Duke of Edinburgh while the Queen is alive
, and to see Louise and James become Princess / Prince of
Edinburgh ( would be prefect timing to upgrade them ) .

I agree, but your theory turns out to be correct. I just read
an article that said the Dukedom of Edinburgh goes to the eldest
son, Charles, when Philip dies. It won't revert back to the
crown until the queen dies and Charles becomes king. Once that
happens, it can be granted to Edward, as per his parents'
wishes, and he'll become Duke of Edinburgh. So the queen won't
see Edward take his father's place. I wonder if there's some
way around all that rigamarole so the D of E can be handed
       directly to Ed?
