Resume/Interview Tips
By: Noor76 Date: May 12, 2018, 2:00 am

Hi everyone,
First, thanks for putting together this board. I was having
withdrawals ;D when I couldn't log into the old site.
Second, where do I begin. I have for the last 15+ years (yes,
that's how long I've suffered) worked at a place that I have
never been happy. It's rude, abusive, not trusting, I could go
on. Part of the reason that I didn't leave long ago was I didn't
have my degree in the field and to be honest, I didn't believe
in myself enough. So, two years back I purchased a car and I
decided to enrolled in an Undergraduate Degree to obtain my B.S.
in Accounting. Of course going back to school has opened my eyes
even more about my working environment. I am always angry and
depressed at work, always wondering how this small incident will
become a major issue. It is time to leave, but I am having some
difficulties with getting the interviews and calls. So I am
wondering if its my Resume/Interview styles.
I would love to receive any suggestions that my fellow
RoyalChatter can offer on my Resume and what I should say or
shouldn't say on an interview, I would greatly appreciate it. I
will post a copy of my resume for you guys to provide feedback
if possible. Thanks, everyone

Hi Noor,
First of all, glad to see you posting and congratulations for
going back to university while working. That's fantastic.
I have to run out of the house but had a very quick look at your
CV.
I personally would put "Key achievements" followed by duties.
I guess that in your full CV you will include the company name
and the dates you worked there.
If you speak another language (thinking of Spanish for instance
in the US), I would add it.
Other than that, I am not familiar with the accounting world so
cannot comment on the order of achievements and duties.

Hi Cara,
Glad to be contributing again, thanks for sending me the
information about the new board. Also, thanks going back to
university was a big step and I can't wait to finish.
Ok, never thought to put the "Key Achievements" at the top. I'll
do that, thanks.
Yes, my company name and time there is on the actual Resume. I
just removed due to me posting on the internet.
Unfortunately, I'm not bilingual.
Thanks for your input, greatly appreciate it.

Hi again Noor,
About to run out of the house again (the weather is just
gorgeous today). I have a few more comments in terms of
presentation to make the CV even more appealing and easier to
read (little things like the use of bold for key achievements
and duties for instance).
Recruiters spend only seconds to skim through CVs so it's
important to get the main points to them very quickly, i.e. to
have them at the top. It's meant to make them want to read the
rest.
How many employees and interns did you supervise? It may be
worth adding the number. Maybe also something to highlight in a
different way in your key achievements (or put it up there).
I'd also add a section "Work experience". As it is now, your
work experience is not separated from your work experience.
Could be that it's because you want to keep it all on one page
but still. There's probably a way to make it work.
Your profile intro is good, concise and to the point, which is
not always easy to achieve. Very clear and understandable. But
somehow I feel that something can be added to it. I would ditch
the "over" with "over 15 years of experience" -- "with 15 years
of experience" is better. Ditto for "over 150 employees". I
would just state 150, if over means 153 (or any higher figure
that you may be nearing) or 160.

Hi Noor, thanks for your post. SO sorry you have suffered so
long at your workplace and thank you for having trust in us and
share it.
Unfortunately I cannot open your link, I donīt have Office.
Anyway, I have no experience with CVs because what I have to use
is a showreel of what I have done, words are not important.
So it is probably a good thing I canīt see your link, my advice
would be worthless.
BEST of luck finding a new job, your are fantastic for educating
yourself while working. I am full of admiration!

Noor...I add my compliments and congratulations to the others.
Going back to school while working is a huge accomplishment. My
hat's off to you. I really can't add too much to what's already
been posted, but I will tell you not to be discouraged. The job
market these days is a tough nut to crack. Don't give up and
don't take a lack of response personally. Just hang in there
and keep applying to job announcements for which you're
qualified. We'll be thinking about you!

Thanks Cara, ABS and Chris. Really appreciate your encouragement
and input.
This job market is indeed hard to crack, it's not what you know,
now it's who you know to get your foot in the door.

It's always a big step making the move to leave a job, but if
the company and its people are toxic, it's a no brainer.
You deserve a better work environment.
I looked at the resume/CV....is this a typical resume/CV in your
part of the world? In Malaysia, we need to list all the past
employers, duration we were there and summarise our role in each
of those companies.
Anyhoo...all the best, Noor!!!
