Prevent Rollers From Overheating

The last couple months we have been experiencing hotter than
normal summer temperatures though out the USA. Too much heat
over a protracted period of time can harm our birds if not
properly taken care of. What are any of you doing to look after
your birds during this time? What advice would you give to
newbies to help them get their roller pigeons through this? ???

Well ventilated lofts and plenty of drinking water is the key to
bringing them thru the type of heat we are experiencing this
summer. Also frequent baths to help with feather molt. Birds are
big time stressed in these conditions, watch them closely! ;D

I don't think we can emphasis enough how important "well
ventilated" is. There are the obvious health benefits to the
handler, but this helps keep the birds healthy as well.
Too many lofts and kit boxes end up with dead-air hot spot above
their door. In our construction we need to remember to vent the
highest point in the box and loft. This will keep the dead air
from heating to a dangerous temperature.

Adding electrolytes to your waterers can help your birds stay
hydrated, it helps them to move fluids through their bodies.
Always make sure your birds are on a good worming program in the
hot months as this can drag down their ability to stay hydrated,
along with breaking them down physically. Keeping your birds fit
will lower their stress levels naturally.
As far as kit birds go, I fly my birds in hot weather to
aclimate them to the higher temps. If your birds are never flown
in the heat they can't build up a tolerance to it. I live in the
High Desert in So Cal and it has been 105 degrees this week. I
can still fly them and have no problems with the heat.

Hi Dave, yes, the electrolytes is a great suggestion. I use
sodium bicarbonate mixed with the water. I use about a teaspoon
per gallon of water.
