what shall i look for when buying

Hi Question, what shall i look for when buying im hopefully
going to have a look at some rollers "mason" breed what sort of
things shall i look for when purchesing new birds and how many
do you think i should start off with??

FIRST and FOREMOST .... see them in the air, if at all
possible.. I would look for how often they roll, their depth
and velocity.. Depending on how much YOU like them, depends on
how much $$$ YOU are will to spend on them... Only you can
decide on the amount you spend. Ask the breeder who you are
purchasing them from ALL your questions. He will be the one to
give YOU all the information you will need about the birds first
hand. Good luck....

I assume you want to work with the "Mason" line of rollers. They
are quite popular these days and their popularity has increased
over the last two years.
As far as what to look for, depends really what you want from
the birds. Do you want deep birds? Birds that roll clean and
straight? Do you want birds that roll together with 4-5 other
birds? It's really up to you. Some guys want nothing but deep
birds regardless of how they roll, others want birds that roll
together, then there are guys who are in-between and of course
there are fanciers who just wants a bird that rolls.

All good advice, if I was starting over and found the breeder I
wish to purchase from
I would try to buy a whole round of squeekers or as many as my
budget would allow and fly them out. And go from there on
individual performance to pick my breeders.

Abby,
have you had/flown /seen rollers perform before? If not I
suggest postpone your purchase for just a bit and go and see
some kits in the air. find out who flys the best around you and
go visit them and watch some birds (Continue to do this even
after you get some rollers). If you already have had or seen
rollers, then you will have some preference to what you like.
Get those.
Ron's idea of acquiring a kit is good, because then you will be
breeding from birds you chose, you will have an opportunity to
learn the birds you are going to breed and it will give you
something interactive to do rather than wait for eggs to hatch.
Start with enough that you can breed yourself at least a full
kit (20-30 birds) in year one. Good parents can raise a clutch
every 32-34 days during breding season.

Ron thanks and yeh iv seen a lot of birds fly./kept/breed before
but its been a while ...iv seen a kit roll together and seen the
deep ones as well, thanks for all the advice guys really big
help as will decide what to do and hopefully get on...will keep
you all posted...!!!

Finally took the plunge and i have purchesed a kit of birmingham
rollers ..... ;D ......... there from the mason line...cost me
an arm and leg :P but managed to get a young team and saw them
fly as well, the breeder that i got them off has a really good
set up and gave me lodes off good advise hes picked up through
his years of keeping them, so hope fully will be working from
this family of birds.....
