Moult

What times or time of year will pigeons moult? Seems like some
of mine loose feathers year round. My oldest birds probably 18
months old. These are not rubys, but I do have 3 pair of rubys
{breeders} but havent seen any loss of feathers. Also when will
mr & mrs cooper come back to south ga? Be my luck that my Rubys
will start kickin out some shore 'nuff eggs 'bout that time, but
Ill have to hold back the Rubys, and fly my hodge podge birds,
and see what I can draw from that :-\ I have more questions but
I'll wait for another time!! thanks '' chesley

The moult for my birds begins around September and the Coppers
returns around late October. I live in Southern Colorado it
could be later for the deep south.

Thanks for reply slvrollers. One of my other questions is feed.
Someone might explain how protiean, carbs, and all that is
measured. I'm guessing 12% bag of wheat add to 12% something
else is still 12%, so how does it add up if its less? I'm not up
to simplicity sometimes. Not a trick question, I just dont know
about balancing or preparing a self made diet or the like. Yes I
know , go buy store bought mix!! Thats not my question! ???

Pigeons may moult much of the year, but that isn't normal.
Starting about now, adult pigeons will start shedding flight and
tail feathers. They will shed and re-grow from inside out.
Meaning the innermost primary and secondary flights first. If
they are working (feeding babies, flying hard in a kit) the rate
of moult will slow or delay. Much of their body and head moult
will happen late summer early fall. Parent birds feeding babies
will delay moult until one day they seemingly fall apart in your
hand.
Photoperiod is the primary control of moult. Secondarily is
nutrition and body condition. You can trick birds into moulting
at different times of the year by lighting or darkening thier
living space. Search these terms on racing pigeon sites and find
better explanations. Birds that are nutritionally stressed, will
postpone or forgo a full moult. Young that are hatched late in
the summer or fall may moult throughout the winter or not at all
as a young bird. All birds when moulting heavily need more and
better nutrition. It is a physical stress for them. Their immune
systems are weakened by energy expense of producing and rearing
young coupled with growing an entire new set of feathers. Any
pathogen or disease that comes along, they will be more
susceptible to. I try to be done rearing young by mid August at
latest, this will be my last round of production now.

Thanks for the webb site ole fart! thanks to wishiwon2 and to
slv rollers. I knew some of you would put me in the right lane.
The moult etc is rough on a bird seems like. I will absorb the
webb site on gurnay when I get some of these Saturday honey do's
out dthe way. Done had to mow grass,take off terash,garbage.
This crap interfears with prime pigeon time. Thanks guys.
