Birds going to the trees

Ok just starting to get some birds out of kitbox and flying they
are older birds. How do I go about keeping them out of the trees
and get them into the air. Got a few that go for trees and stay
then rest are just hanging out on kitbox or loft roof. Any
suggestions or should I just wait a while to give them time to
adjust and they will fly on there own. They only been out about
3 or 4 days outside of cage now. Put them in cage for week to
get use to surroundings now they out on there own.

I would not let them sit in the trees or anywhere else except
the kit box. If you have some old hens that will not go to the
trees, let them out with one of your young that is a problem.
The young bird SHOULD stay with them on the kit box. When you
are confident with that bird, add another. It might be a slow
process but would be better then losing all of them. If the
first one goes into the trees, move on to another BUT do not
cull it, wait and try again after you have resolved the problem
with as many as you can.
Take care my friend
Thom

Sounds to me like you may be feeding them too much. Try cutting
their feed and see if that helps.

Paul,
Birds that go to trees are almost impossible to break from it. I
will tolerate it for the first time or two out of the kitbox. If
they do it a third or fourth time, they need to be culled
because they will attract other birds to do the same thing. Same
thing goes with non-flyers and house-sitters. Cull them if they
don't break the habit after you have flown them with older birds
and cut their feed. Better to lose one or two early on, than
ending up with an entire kit that won't fly and kit. Then you
have to cull the whole kit! Good luck!

How old are these birds? they are this years young then maybe
they're not strong enough to fly far, they want to get up but
maybe not have it in themselves just yet so the trees look like
a good target. I'd cut their food a little and let them out
every other day. I've just added some younger ones to my young
bird kit, and they took to the trees around my loft the first
few times they tried to get up. In fact I left one out all night
as it wouldn't or couldn't come down, the next morning it was
still in the tree and when it did come down had trouble gauging
it's distance from the loft roof as it came in. I starved it
that day and put it out the next time they went out, It's never
been in the trees again! Might work for you, but I wouldn't cull
it unless it does it again after you've kept it in for a few
days.

I agree with Thom and Cliff. Do not tolerate it! Kick their ass
and only let them land where you designate as 'the place'. I
know it seems a bit harsh but the alternative is allowing them
to continue to misbehave and potentially attract others into the
same bad behaviour. As long as they know the roof is THE safe
place, I would do anything to chase them up and out of the trees
or wherever else they are that they shouldnt be. If they persist
at the bad behaviour, get rid of them. What good is a bird that
wont fly or only does it when it feels like it? Answer ... no
good at all.
Old birds are harder to get started flying than young ones. That
is why the advice to get them on the roof as soon as the can fly
to a perch. There is a critical development period that
flying/kitting/performing development happens within, if not at
the appropriate time, they may never develop properly.

Paul.... you mentioned that these birds have only been out 3 or
4 times. Are you letting them take to the air on their own??
Or are you flagging them to take to the air?? Let them take to
the air on their own. They may not be strong enough to stay
flying with the older birds. Just my opinion...
