Extreme Diarrhea Problem

Hey All, I have a cock that has extreme diarrhea for the last
three days. He is eating the same food he and his mate have been
on since Jan. The same water, everything is the same. He is
feeding two week old young and they are fine as is his nest
mate. There are no other birds in the loft that have the same
symptoms. He has not gone light but I am worried that if this
continues he will. Any ideas or suggestions on how to slow or
stop the diarrhea?

Hi Thom, This is only a suggestion, I had the same problem with
a pair or two of breeders. I thought it was coccidi and treated
for that, only the treatment did not work! I lost one bird a few
days later which I opened up and found a multitude of worms in
its intestines!! Round worms i believe they are called. This
despite having wormed all my birds 3 months prior!
In my view I think this may be the problem. I would give this
bird an individual wormer tablet such as Vetefarms Wormout
Tablets. One of the biggest causes for health problems in
pigeons and I might add, the most missed diagnosis problems with
Pigeons is worms!!

Hey Raul, I have thought of worms and intended to treat with
Moxidectin which can be given while feeding young. I am glad to
see someone I respect have the same thought.

Thom,
The avian vet told me that roundworms can build a tolerance to
certain meds also. He recommended rotating different wormers
every 90 days, and being sure to get the dosage right. He
recommended AGAINST using wormers that are intended for other
livestock because pigeon men rarely get the dosage
correct.....Good luck..

Hey Cliff, WELCOME back! I agree with your vet. I do switch up
wormers but always try to use the Moxidectin which can be given
while breeding and feeding young. It is a liquid and dispensed
in water. The bird in question strightened up the next day and
seems just fine now. I have no idea what happened to him those
few days.

Thanks, Thom. I'm a busy guys these days with the NBRC and World
Cup Executive Committees and training my birds, but it's good to
be back.
I use the Moxydectin, too. I like the fact that it works so fast
and can be used in the breeding loft because it doesn't harm
youngsters. I rotate it with Ivomec and Foy's Wormout Gel.

Hey Thom, glad to hear the bird is back to normal my friend! Ive
got 24 2012 Ruby ybs flying, and most look very promising in the
air! I have been using the same breeding method as you, and must
say the results are paying off! Or should I say Im on the roll
LOL!

I've read that we should not give our birds meds meant for
livestock. When my dog or cat got worms (probably a different
type) I gave them garlic cloves in their food and it killed the
worms. Would ground up cloves or garlic in a bottle mixed with
the water do the same?

I dont think there is a problem giving pigeons medicines that
are labeled for use in other classes of livestock or poultry. In
most cases the active ingredient is the same. The challenge
becomes calculating dosage. Some drugs may act differently in a
pigeon than a farm mammal and so the rate would be different.
Many medicines are packaged for large animal use and it is
difficult to accurately reduce the dosage for a pigeon sized
creature.
I seriously doubt crushed garlic kills worms in livestock or
poultry. The wormers available for over the counter usage have a
tremendous safety margin. Meaning if we calculate dosage wrong,
we stand little chance of doing harm to the animal were
treating. Most of them have safety margins of 5 to 6 times the
recomended dosage. It is very expensive to do the research and
apply for labeling for the use of a medicinal drug or pesticide.
there simply isnt enough revenue to be made back off of pigeon
medicine to justify the expense of labeling it as such. We will
likely always have to use medicines and pesticides for our
pigeons as "off label". Meaning using things like dog wormer for
our birds or garden insecticide in the loft.
