Illegitimate matings in openloft breeding....

What percentage of birds raised in an openloft environment can
be expected to be from illegitemate matings? I am curious if
anyone has studied this and if there is an expected percentage
rate out there.....

When I was in racing homers I heard rumors everything from 2
percent all way up to 25 percent. Not sure if anyone did study
or just throw out numbers.

believe or not i open loft a couple years ago and had some luck
everyone stayed with each as far i know it but i wasn't out
there all the time donnie james

hey Jay, what you might want to ask is, can i breed open loft
and insure no illegitimate matings? you can if you eliminate all
perches, and only have the birds breed with their mates in their
own box. Eric Laidler told me how he uses a porch on each of his
nestboxes, and the cock can defend his box easily, plus the pair
spends more time at home. i've used this porch on all 24 of my
nestboxes and i am reasonably sure all matings are pure.
observation has shown me repeatedly that matings are between the
pairs, and their young have so far proven it too. hope this
helps

There have been a couple published results Jay. The one that I
remember, illegitimacy ran around 5%, I dont have a citation for
the literature. It was something I read years ago that Tom
Monson cited. I dont know how the purity of matings was
determined or what breed they were. There is a difference in
breeds how aggressive or faithful they may be to their mates. I
also have found that if any infidelity happens, it is mostly in
the first round when pairs are newly together, or when pairs are
too crowded.
For the most part, I breed open loft. (I use individuals for a
few pair that I am collecting eggs from as donors). In one loft
I have rollers, 11 nest boxes in an 8'x8' section. In another
section which houses fosters and a couple of pairs of stock, I
have 20 pairs in an 8'x10' section. There are mookies, WOE, and
birminghams together in there. In 12 years, I have not had a
single crossbred (roller x WOE, mookie x roller etc) offspring.
There may have been a few BR on BR matings that were
illegitimate or same with a mookie on mookie etc, but none that
I could prove or even suspected to be so. In so far as I can
prove, it hasnt happened here, but it wouldnt surprise me if
there were a couple over the years.

PS I tried using a bull method to poly breed a cock a few yrs
ago at the end of the season. Most of the hens would not let the
new cock tread them and laid clear eggs. I have wanted to try it
again at the first of the season, but some of my birds arent
quite ready to pair up directly when I put them together in
February, even with lights on them for 14 hrs.

Hi fellas,
I believe Tom Monson wrote an article citing that illegitimacy
ran around 4-5% while the late Joe Quinn during his study with
pigeons, using his knowledge of pigeon genetics, said
illegitimacy in an OPEN BREEDING LOFT was around 15%. I think
one important issue is the size of the loft.
Now I do agree with Jon in that if there was some illegitimate
pairings especially in his open lofts of WOEs, Mookies, and BRs,
he would know. I know I visited a fancier who also used Mookies
as fosters and had some BRs in the same loft and he showed me a
few offsprings that were mookie/BR mix even though they were
paired with their respective breeds.
Again, I do believe the aggressiveness of particular cocks do
matter when it comes to illegitimate matings in an open loft.
