       Problem with kitting
   DIR By: Jon

       ---------------------------------------------------------
Due to numerous problems I got a late start flying my YB's and
they won't kit. I only have 3 old kit birds due to BOP'S and
have no problem with them, but the few YB's that I fly with them
won't kit. The all YB kit (12) fly all over the place. Two will
kit for a time then split. All these problem birds are this
year. They have been flying about 6-8 times. I have tried
turning my 3 good birds out with one or two young birds but no
luck. Any suggestions. I had this problem a couple years after I
started but had more "A" kit birds and was able to incorporate
       the YB's in slowly.

My advice, be patient and keep flying them. You said they've
only been out 6-8 times. Give them 25 times out before you make
any harsh decisions. You didnt mention how old these are. Are
       they the same age?

There is a critical developement period to learn good
flying/kitting behaviours in well. After that period, young
birds can still develope proper flying habits but the odds go
down significantly as they age. For my birds, the younger I can
get them trap trained and in th eair the better. After about 4
months old, they become much more difficult to train.

All the birds that won't kit are 2 to 3 month old. I may be a
few short tonight. I turned out another 6 and thought that I had
their right wing taped. I guess I was in a hurry and the tape
came off 4 of them and they are still out and it's dark. They
have been on top of the loft 2 or 3 times for a day so they may
come back. Patients is not easy for me and these birds. Reading
the post on this site and it seems like everyone has better luck
and birds than I do. I have been told that this family is a
difficult family for a beginner but the person that is helping
me raises this family and likes them.

2 or 3 times for a day wont work for most. They'll need once or
twice a day for 4 or 5 days, unless they are just weaned babies
(which sounds like these are not).

If patience is not your virtue, these birds may always be a
struggle for you. No matter the family, there are things that
simply take time, some things lots of time. You can make alot of
your own luck by wise choices, wisdom comes from experience,
experience is learned through time and often from bad choices.

The birds haven't been flown enough to kit good. Add to that
their age and you do have a problem.
A friend of mine describes newly released birds as flying like a
swarm of bumble-bees. They zip this way and that. Your birds
       are probably doing this, right?
Fly them every day. You mention a couple of old birds, go
ahead and toss them in the mix. The YBs will keep the older
ones from flying as high or long but what they will bring to the
mix is they will kit themselves and young birds will start to
join them as they settle down. Additionally, they may help
bring back the ones that were turned out too early.
When I first turned out my YBs, they were all over the sky and
neighborhood - as bad as anyone's birds could be, but now they
are starting to tighten up. Kitting takes a bit of time and
only by flying them will they learn it.
I want instant gratification, just like the next guy, but with
the babies it's better not to rush things.

Thanks for the info. i'll try to fly them more often. As for the
missing 4 YB's, I guess their wing tape did not come off. They
all chose a bush near by and spent the night in it. I found one
the next morning on my front porch and found the others in the
       bush. ;D

hey jon, i'm a newbe also. i can share what iv'e learned from
others on this site and hard knocks i learn from experience.#1
i put babies on floor when tail feathers are about 1" long, feed
pan on floor, water, water and feed they can easily reach.
Parent will still feed them also. When they are able to fly from
floor to old nest box or other shelf, then they go to kit box, i
put'em in a holding cage during the day couple hrs a day 3 or
4 days. Then my holding cage has a removable slide up door of
hard wire, that aligns up with my trap door , mine being of 4"
pvc sewer pipe & 45 degree elbo. DO this trap thing 5 or 6
times, them being hugry. once they trap good, i'll set each
bird on kit box roof or let the door open. let them come out on
their own sweet time. Usually they jump to roof or short
fly. What ever you do 'DO NOT SCARE THEM OUT' or you will be
sorry. Trust me!! Eventullay one or two may fly short distance.
Older birds will fly up and it may be day or two before younger
birds try. Eventually they will all fly up. but if you scare
them you will be sorry. They won't kit at first, but as someone
else said once, at lest they are in the same zip code!! They
will kit, even a town pigeon will !! don"t scare a bird, i have
to earn their trust, bad habits are a big set back! Just works
       for me . ----- chesley
