Difference In Rollers

Ok I am new to the whole getting ready to compete thing. I am
hoping within next year or two to start competing. But what is
the difference in competition rollers and say someone who has
kept them as just a hobby as back yard flyer. I mean I know
competition birds are flown in kits and all but why couldn't a
person get birds from back yard flyer and fly in competition?

Hi Paul You could train and manage your back yard fliers to
compete. I am in the process of taking my family's of rollers
into competition. My Easley Rollers i have been flying in my
back yard for five years and Ruby's for one years. I am learning
to train them and manage them as if they were flying
competitions. I am new to the competition side of thing but i
manage my kits like the were competing every two months. If you
have a good family of rollers you could train your back yard
fliers to compete.

There isn't much difference. To compete, you'll have to inform
yourself of the rules and the methods of scoring and then train
your birds accordingly. There isnt a magical difference between
competition birds and backyard birds. The thing about competing,
is the date is set ahead of time when you attempt to have them
showing their best performances.
There are differences in performance attributes amongst strains
of rollers, even those that compete and originate from the same
sources. It has to do with stock selections by the individual
and the training/management practices employed. Some strains are
noted for high frequency rolling, others for deep rollers and
still others for precision teamwork and many have combinations
of several desired traits. I haven't seen that there is a
superior strain for competition, yet. One difference that has
been identified in the past (not by me) is that many back yard
fanciers strive for outstanding individual spinners whereas
competition fliers place emphasis on the dynamics of the kit. To
score in competition, the birds must work together to some
degree. To score well, they must also be of high quality, deep
with good frequency. Competition requires that you get to know
you birds and be able to predictably set them up for a specific
day.

Seems like I got a lot to learn lol. I am up for it though one
day at a time. In no rush long as it takes I am in it for the
long haul.

Paul, WishiWon2 hit it on the head. It's USUALLY a difference in
breeding philosophy. To do well in competition, especially in
this day and age, your birds must perform as a kit and break
together. Most guys who choose the backyard venue and never
compete don't focus so much on big breaks.
In competition, you need have to have birds rolling
SIMULTANEOUSLY. You could have some of the best birds going 30',
tight balls but if you don't have at least 5 birds ROLLING
SIMULTANEOUSLY, you won't score a lick.

Stay in the backyard, Save yourself a lot of grief. Comp flying
is overrated. Just enjoy your birds. 8) Joe

Joe,
I didnt fly competition with my birds until this year. I think
it's a great experience and will help a person to focus more on
their birds than they would by just flying in their backyard. I
am not saying everyone should fly competition, but for those who
want to try it I believe it will help them to understand what
their birds are really all about.
Think about it, you must focus on having a good solid kit, you
have to use the feed to dictate how they perform on game day,
and everything that goes with it just teaches you more and more
about this great hobby.
Any family of birds has the capability to do well, just depends
on how developed the manager is...so a lot of times it's more
about what the manager of the kit does to prepare them for a
fly...than it really is about the birds.
I say go for it, have fun with it, and never look back. If you
decide it's not your thing...then dont continue with it at that
point...but dont just lay down and not try it because of
someones opinion who may have had a bad experience somewhere
down the line. It isnt for everyone....I got that. But
everyone should give it a shot at some point.
Just my opinion...have a good one guys, and keep lookin up!

I agree with LittleJohn and would like to add that
competition is whatever you want to make of it...If you are a
competitive minded guy that understands that you will not win or
even place well everytime (because things do go wrong) you will
enjoy it and do good at it...If you are a guy that likes to
blame somebody else instead of yourself when you don't win or
place good than competition is probably not for you.....there
will be times that you feel the judge did not score you right
and times when you feel you have the birds just right for a 2
o'clock release and the judge shows up at 4 o'clock and your
birds bomb out or the wind kicks up to 20 MPH 15 minutes before
you fly or it pours down rain your entire allotted time to fly
your birds .......my experience has been that even tho these
things do happen it is not because the guys are out to get you
.....we are all human and prone to mistakes and many times it is
something that the Judge or Regional Director have no control
over.......so do it with the best in mind but keep a moderate
perspective on it and when you have a bad day don't sweat it
just look ahead to the next fly and put your best foot forward
again.... Jay

I look forward to flying in some competitions. I have already
made a lot of good friends just getting started in this hobby.
Most notably Jay Knepp himself. He has been nothing but kind to
me let me come up look around so I could get idea how to set
things up for the competition part of it. I agree with what most
of ya say flying competitions probably isn't for everyone. But
for me its what I look forward to. I don't think I will win it
but I like to think one day after some learning and all I will
be competitive and then might be able to slip in there and win
one day.

Hi Paul I am glad to here that you have a really great guy like
Jay helping you he is a very fair man and has done very well
with his birds . I wish you all the best with your birds and I
know from listening to you on this site and others that you will
do well
