could some one direct me to the termonology use like, related to
pigeon flying . seems like i saw all the definations in an NBRC
book. but i loaned it out , hadn't seen it since. Like whats
ment by a turn, half turn etc. Maybe some of you might have the
defs. i'd like to print it off to put in my hand files. I heard
of water fall, can imagine that but not sure. Is there somewhere
i could down load, seem like there was stuff about wing feathers
and the like. Thanks chesley I know,,, Shesih !!

A turn is when a group of rollers roll at the same time
together. It is also called a break, meaning the birds broke off
from flying to perform. 1/4, 1/2 and 3/4 turns means that 25%,
50% or 75% of the kit rolled together. In years past, there was
no limit to the kit size so it was truly a proportionate
measure. In todays 20 bird competitions, it requires a minimum
of 5 birds to break together to make a scoreable turn. The
scoring system we use is a modified version of the 1/4 turn
scoring from the past. It rewards bigger sized breaks or turns
with a doubling effect of the number of birds scored. To be
considered a scoreble turn or break, birds need to initiate
thier performance together at precisely the same moment. A
waterfall is when birds roll together, but each bird initiates
its roll slightly later than one another so it is a continuous
series of commencing performing. There may be many birds in the
act of rolling at the same time, but the start of each birds
roll needs to be simultaneous to score or else it is considered
       a waterfall.
Im not sure what term you're asking about with wings feathers,
but I will guess you're asking about wing style. A roll, when
viewed from the front, back or beneath often shows the illusion
of a shape, described by letters such a 'X', 'A', or 'H'. These
shapes are made from the illusion of wings passing repeatedly
through a given space to where our brain interprets it as a
solid shape. In general, it is more desireable to have birds
rolling with 'wings up', the higher the better until the
wingtips even appear to bow in, molding together.

There is not a glossary of book of terminology that I am aware
of relating to roller flying or competing with them. Feel free
to ask away here, it will give us something to resposnd to.

I'll put in a few that are common and I know. This is not all of
them, just off the top of my head and again, this is how I
UNDERSTAND THEM. If there are any mistakes, feel free to let me
know or correct them. I haven't flown comp yet so I could be
wrong on many of these....good for us there are guys like
WishIWon2 here to help us out. :)
Kit: Group of birds flying together
11 Bird- A kit of up to 11 birds performing together
20 Bird- A kit of up to 20 birds performing together
Break/Turn- When any number of birds roll together
1/4 Turn- When 5 birds roll together
1/2 Turn- When 10 birds roll together
3/4 Turn- When 15 birds roll together
Full Turn- When all 20 birds roll together (very very rare in
       competition)
Waterfall- When birds roll but not simultaneously...ex ample: 4
birds break, and then a split second later, 2-3 more go and then
2-3 more go. Looks like a waterfall
Out Bird- When a bird flying with the kit leaves the kit and
does not come back for a prolonged period of time (more than
       minute usually)
Cutter: A bird that flies through and across the kit.
Coming into the Roll: A bird that is just starting to roll
Bumper: A bird that will often roll and hit, or "bump", trees,
buildings, the kitbox and sometimes the ground. Usually when
going out of the kitbox or coming in to land.
Rolldown: A bird that will roll all the way down, usually from
any height, until it hits the ground.
Stiff: A bird that doesn't roll very often...sometimes not at
       all.
Plate Rolling: When a bird rolls sideways, or horizontally,
       instead of dropping vertically.
Tail Riding: When a bird leans its head back with both wings
held high and seems to "fall" slowly for a second or two in
almost a frozen position. (Often seen in young birds before they
       come into the roll)
       BOP/Sky Shark: Birds of prey
Sky Out: When birds fly up high enough to the point where it is
hard to see them perform...(For me, anything over about
       400-500')
Overfly: When you lose a kit of birds, or many birds, during a
fly. Could be caused by weather, feed, BOP or any of the said
       combination.
Hard Color: Darker colors like blacks, red check, blue checks
       etc
Soft Color: Lighter colors like whites, yellows, lavendars,
       reduced etc
Backyard Flier: A person who flies rollers but doesn't compete.
Figure 8: A flying pattern that looks like an "8" in the sky
Flying on One Wing: When birds fly in circles, always going left
or right. Think of Nascar in the air :)
Butterfly Wing/Action: When birds fly very slow with minimal
       wing beats/stroke.
Frequency: How often birds will roll.
Style: The apparent illusion of where we see the wings when a
bird is rolling. WishIWon2, aka Jon, talked about this. X, A,
and H are the three main wing styles you see. X just means the
wings appear to cross at the top making an X, A meaning wings
touch, and H meaning wings are straight up and down.
Axel Roller: Also another style of rolling where the wings come
out to the side instead up up and above the body.
Cull: A bird that is not up to the breeder and flyer's standard.
PS, WishIWon2 needs to change his name since he's won already :)
hehe. Hope all is well Jon.

hey 2y4life, donnie james, wishiwon2, Yes I needed those terms
etc and thanks , but i just sitting here and thought that one
time what i saw was called a glossary about pigeons i think,
not sure but it may have included atmany of pigeon . I do think
it started out in albethelly order. cant spell it ,dont want to
look it up. I remember they mentioned the eye and named all the
parts etc beak, waddle, If that helps ?? If not then so k. Hey
i didn't know what self had to do with a pigeon Till somebody
said it had to do with a pigeons eye. Probably dont know a thing
about widow hood either, not when it concerns a pigeon!! I 'm 69
yr old, waited too long to get into birds i guess, but i'm lovin
it now Ha Ha, ya'll cut me some slack. I'm as keyed up as as a
boy on my first fishing trip!! You guys have a better tomorrow
       enjoy the present !! Chesley

i am not aware of a glossary of term relating to competative
roller flying. There are numerous books and websites that offer
definitions of terms relative to pigeons in general. Im too lazy
to write them all. I will answer or define all the terms I am
familiar with, if you ask them.

'Self' does not refer to a pigeons eye. It is a term that
describes its plumage color. A blue bar self, is a blue barred
bird with no white, bronzing or other color factor showing. Self
applies primarily to ash red and blue based birds. We do not
typically refer to recessive red or indigo/andalusian as a
       'self'.

I am not sure you have access to this, but the March-April 2011
NBRC bulletin has about 10 pages of roller terms listed. They
are not necessarily "competition" terms but the list might help
       with some of your questions.
