Hi Mike I fly what they call English style I dont have regular
Kit boxs I have kit lofts mine are over 6 foot tall 42 inch deep
and 45 inch wide you can walk right in to them every kit loft
has it own window they get a lot of light and fresh air. I have
tried both ways keeping them in the dark and giving them all the
light they want and I can say with my birds I have no problems
fling them this way at all they love to sit in the sun take care
       hope this helps

I have raised pigeons for many many years in the past. All my
lofts had outside aviaries and or removable settling cages
attached. Birds need the "natural" Sun light for a variety of
health reasons. When I started in "rollers"in 2004, I noticed
that most had dark kit boxes. I never put my birds in a "dark"
kit boxes. All my kit boxes have a removable settling cage
attached to them. For one reason to settle my birds and also so
the birds can sun bath or sit out in the rain for a bath. I have
to go along with with Thom's line of thinking on this one.

       Hi All.
I don't fly to kitbox, I have old style loft open and
avairy. Plenty of ventilation and sunshine. I don't see the
point of kit boxes to be honest. I know what they are supposed
to do, but have you ever watched a team of racers exersizing?
they fly tight and controlled, and their not stuck in a 4x2x2
box! Keping birds in the dark or semi dark, will relax them, and
not get them using any energy, which then can be spent flying.
The racing pigeon men over here in England and in Eroupe keep
young racers on a system know as the Darkness. From what I
undertsand they are kept in near total darkness, just enough
ambiant light so they can find the drinker. And are allowed
light into the loft at set periods. I think it holds or rushes
through the moult, as stated not a racing man anymore, but have
heard of the system. Google darkness racing system, should
explain it better. I thought about trying it last year with my
young rollers. But after bad breeding season, and loosing birds
of the loft from them being startled by hawks! I was only left
with four, now one! But it's a system i'm going to investigate.
