I used to be able to fly consistently in the early morning, say
around 7:30am. Recently, there has been a goshawk buzzing the
large hay field just to the east of us. I can see it buzzing low
over the field searching for mice and rabbit. It has gone after
the rollers on several occasions. My birds are now on lock down.
:-\
I haven't really tried the later afternoons as of yet because my
current schedule won't allow it. But I will be working with some
young birds shortly and will start with early morning and see
what happens... ??? Everyone has to figure the best time to fly
for his/her location. I flew for years with few morning problems
and now I may have to rethink my approach to mornings.

I live in hawk alley between the hills and a river so it is a
year round struggle with the Coopers. The best time for me is
late morning or early afternoon. By late morning I mean 11am or
later and by early afternoon I mean before 3pm. The attacks are
fewer during these times but the truth is an attack can come at
anytime. The problem with flying between 11am and 3pm is wind
and heat. I keep a kit box flag in my hand and ready to use, it
won't stop the hawk but it will scatter the kit and make it
harder for the hawk to score.
Take care my friend
Thom

When ever I can't see any BOP or hear them is the BEST time for
me.....haha....all kidding aside... When possible, I fly my
birds as early as 6 a.m. with little or NO problems at all. If
not I fly them late afternoon, meaning 4-6 p.m. Or when ever I
have a flock of Crows around me, I know it's safe. My resident
Crows do a FINE job of keeping my airways clear of BOP for
me...

When I have coopers in the area the only time I can fly is early
morning. Mid-day they hit in the air. Later in the day they
pick them off as they land on the loft.
Like some others I am lucky to have crows around and they keep
the raptors stirred up.

I fly 1 to 1 1/2 hours before dark and haven't lost a bird yet
at this time. I tried mornings , midday and early afternoon and
lost birds often. Just what works for me in the South. David
