Roller chased by falcon

Hi
I have a Roller that was a great prospect for the future. She
has all the right things we look for in a Roller. Spins fast,
great depth, quality spin, frequent and possibly A style. About
ten days ago i let the Rollers out to train and a falcon showed
up. It chased this hen for a minute but the hen evaded (got
away). So I locked birds up for three days. When i flew the
rollers the next time she flew for a few minutes and landed.
This hen has always been in the air for 30 minutes. She is slow
flying more but still only for ten minutes or so. My question is
will she return to flying 30 minutes again? Have any of you
experienced this also? Did your bird return to normal? I am
concerned this is one of my best young roller hens.

This is not uncommon. I would lock her down for a few weeks and
give her time to settle down. If you push her now she could
mistake any shadow for the falcon and crash while trying to get
away. She may or may not return to flying like she did before
the attack and only time will tell. She sounds like a keeper and
I would not be afraid of using her in the stock loft. This is a
learned behavior not genetic and her young will be as good as if
it never happened.
Take care
Thom

I'm wondering if that (shark) may have hit her and she has a
wound under her feathers. Keep her in for 2 to 3 weeks to make
sure she is mended 8) .

Thanks Thom and Joe
I appreciate your advice!!
I will lock her down for couple of weeks, then fly her again and
see what happens. Don't want her freak out thinking the shadows
are Falcons. I could see that she was nervous when i flew her.
Joe I did not even think she might be hurt, because i did not
see any physical signs of her being hurt. I will check her out
better.
Thanks

Hi. Although I've been very lucky with hawks and or falcon
problems. A good friend of mine has been hit a few times. His
birds went from nearly 1hour fly time to 5mins, before they
would sit on his house roof. they would sit for an hour or two,
not even conpemplate coming in!! This caused him great concern,
as before he kept the rollers, he was a very successfull racing
pigeon man. It took him to lock the birds down for nearly a
year!!! Before he could get any fly time of performance from his
birds!!!! So I guess, it could be a while. The raptor will be
back. Maybe you could alter their feed time so you can give them
different fly times. Raptors are becoming a big problem over
here in England. My local competition Tippler club, haas packed
up, because of hits from raptors, while training the birds or in
comps. A very good friend of mine, has also called it a day with
comp flying rollers. This year he's lost 7 birds from his main
fly team, and he's only let them out this last two months, after
locking down since september last year!!!! It's a sad
progression of life, I don't recall seeing a raptor over
suburbs, when I first kept pigeons back in the 1970's. Nor do I
recall them attacking pigeons in the early 1990's. But friends
in both the locations I used to live, have lost or had a pigeon
badly injured by attacks from the raptors!!! Maybe you could
have a firework rocket standing ready? Then just light the blue
touch paper, when your local Bird of prey, pays you a visit, to
see if prize roller is on the menu!!!!! all the best, Keep them
spinning

Hi nephilim
Sorry to hear your freinds are losing so many birds to birds of
prey . I only see them once in awhile. Maybe once a month i see
a Hawk or falcon. I usually can chase them away with a flashing
from a mirror. I have not lost any rollers to birds of prey but
have had a few close calls. I'm lucky i only see them once and
awhile. Im going to lock this hen down for a couple of weeks and
fly her and see what happens. I really hope she comes to back
normal. She is part of my best kit.
Thanks

I locked down this hen for three weeks to let her try and get it
back together. Have tried to fly this hen all of May with no
good results. I let her out and she fly's around the yard for a
couple of minutes at the most. She has been feed well. It
absolutely does not want to fly any more. Unfortunately i have
no more time to spend on this bird. Time to cull

Sorry to hear Mike.
I have had this happen twice. I dont get lots of pressure from
predators or not a steady regular presence. My birds may not see
a predator til they get several months old. It freaks them out
pretty hard when attacks come (I suppose it does to everyones
birds too). I have seen some guys who's birds are under regular
pressure barely even flinch unless it is an aggressive pursuit.
One of those birds I had that chose to quit flying after being
attacked was old enough and good enough I chose to bred from.
She is producing well. The other I gave away to a guy to breed
from, havent heard back about it. Like Thom said, it is a
learned behaviour not a genetic one. So if they're good enough,
I wouldnt hesitate to give a try in the brood loft.
