Tail Riding
DIR By: chesley l warren

Just a thought that hit me today as i watched a few ybs flying .
Ones tail lower his head tilted some what backwards as he was
sailing around. Then i said to myself, is this bird doing what
is maybe called tail ridding ? Or is this bird sailing along
awaiting for the big ceasure ! Is this bird waiting for the
monkey see monkey do? If he was, then he had a few rollers to
imatate. and i just said yeap. I tend to belive his inborn
weakness had not yet been induced enough by feeding him 100%
wheat. Then tonight the ceasure might hit and he fall off the
roost! I know some of you may think my brain is scrambled?
Possiable. !!! Chesley.

What you described sounds like typical tail riding behaviour.
Wings held up high, tail flexed and head tipped back, the bird
just sinks through the sky. This often precedes the development
of rolling. Birds should typically progress from this to rolling
within few weeks to month. If tail riding persists for a long
period of time, say 2 months or longer, the probability of
progression in its development of the roll has been arrested
somehow and It will likely not become a good, sound roller. Once
a bird has developed into rolling, most people consider tail
riding a fault.
Rolling is not a siezure. It is a controled, coordinated action.
Feeding 100% wheat wont induce the development of rolling.
Development is primarily genetically controlled. If it rolls off
its perch during the night, get rid of it.

I agree with you wishiwon2. Over here i've heard it called
sitting. It's young trying to get a roll or tumble in, Depending
on the strain and the heritage of the bird it might take it up
to or over a year to develop itself fully into a competent
roller. I bought some young last year, and had a blue grizzle
that was tail sitting from day one. This bird is alledegly bred
down from champion winning stock, so I've given it some time to
develop. Now it's a yearling it's starting to roll from about
1/2 a second or so. Even if it doesn't ever roll to great depth,
it may be a breeder of deep rollers. I wouldn't be so hasty to
cull. There's a quote by Mr George Mason in the famous "winning
with spinners" book about birds that don't roll, I'm sure it's
been posted on here on more than one occasion. Not knowing your
strain of roller, I guess everyone will have their own theroy. I
suggest you contact the breeder of the parents and find out how
long they took to develop the roll, and if possible delve a bit
deeper into the strain. There was also a guy around at the same
time as W Pensom, who is quoted as saying any bird which rolls
deep as a young bird will turn into a crasher as a yearling!!!!
Hope I've been helpfull. Keep them spinning Gary

Okay.....tell me if I am wrong in my thinking?? I was always
under the impression that once a bird starts to "tail ride", the
roll will follow in due time. Or have I been miss lead?? Thanks
guys

Chesley, I have no wish to start about culling but the truth
is..... To move a loft forward only the best can survive.
Take your tree sitters, cut their feed drastically and they may
stop but left to their own they will teach all the rest to do
the same.
I give young birds every chance but once they start behaving
badly they are demoted to the last chance kit.
About the flipping and tail riding, some of mine do but not for
long, the best start with short rolls right off and those are
the birds I am looking for.
Any that tail ride or just single flip are demoted to the last
chance kit but stand little chance of ever going back up to the
"A" kit, but few make it and that is why I keep a last chance
kit.
It all depends on what type of kit or loft a person wants,
pretty birds or action packed. I can not afford to keep them all
and I refuse to give any bird away I would not keep myself.
Take care my friends
Thom

Paul, you are right, rolling follows tail riding in most cases
as part of development. Sometimes, however, a bird wont progress
beyond tail riding in development and will continue doing it and
not perform properly. Most of my young do not tail ride, they
just start off with single flips and short tumbles. Over the yrs
I have had a few that tail sat until ... I finally rid myself of
them.

chesley l warren,
Dont allow your birds to land anywhere except on your loft,
ever. Dont monitor the situation with those landing in the pine
tree. Get them outta the tree. If they persist, get rid of them.
It will draw others into doing it and potentially spoil a whole
lot of youngsters.

I appreciate the comments from every one, had only one tree
sitter to day. Like i said Ill be watching. Im not opposed to
culling .. My neighbor lives about 1/8 mile behind me has
rollers, and he flys 430pm usually. I fly8.30am or there about.
But last sat he let his birds out, and i let mine out not seeing
his. and i said oh crap and they joined up togather way up high.
high! right about over his house. Now panic hits, i jump on my
4wheller, run thought the woods to his place and he said its ok
ok, when they get through flyin yours will go home. I hauled
donkeys and when i got in my yard they were on top of the loft.
Have flat tin roof. I blew whistle and they trapped in nothing
flat. Thanks to Mr Tom, i made double traps out of the pvc, doest
take long to trap, (when a bit hungry) !!

I know, with my Oriental rollers, they most always start out
tail riding and within a short time start to to all their
moves.... After they get the hang of the roll and the twizzles
and sharp turns they never resort back to just tail riding...
