Wheat and Milo

I know this food thing is a large problem with many of us
guys... I was just wondering "where" the concept of just
feeding wheat and milo came from?? Why can't they just be fed a
"good" pigeon mix? In my mind, I can't see where feeding just
these 2 grains can give the birds all they need. Can anyone
shed some light on this for me, as well as many other who are in
question ??

Feeding straight wheat 14% protein ensures your birds are eating
the same exact thing leading up to a competition. If you feed
pigeon mix you will have certain birds eating all the peas 24%
protein and others eating only Milo 11.5%. You will end up with
birds that are different in weight and strength.
I feed a good mix when I'm building their muscles up, but when
it gets close to comp time everything is fed separate. Wheat,
Milo, peas and safflower. You want your birds all close to the
same weight and strength to get the best consistancy in the air.

Daves right about feeding mixed grains. We have talked about
that here before. Feeding a mix allows birds to be selective and
thus not all birds in the kit are nutritionally on the same
wavelength. This affects your kits performance as well as your
potential stock selections.
I dont know who came up with a wheat milo combination, I did
not. I have experiemented, extensively with grains and
performance in my birds and have found it to be a very
predictable combination for getting top performance from my
birds. I dont know why (I have a few hypotheses), but for me, it
just works.
You can feed a mixture of various grains, there are guys all
over the country who do it. My birds have not suffered any ill
effects healthwise from eating a limited selection though. It
has been said that during WW times, when grain was rationed,
pigeon fliers fed bread crumbs to their birds. I believe
sometimes we out think ourselves and over complicate matters
with our birds.

Wishiwon2... So, I take it that the "wheat & milo" mix would
just be for the roller breed? They can sustain perfectly with
just those 2 grains as their main diet?? For the past few days
I have fed just straight milo to 6 birds and have noticed a
LARGE difference in their performance. I have to get to the feed
store this weekend and get some wheat to finish my experiment.
I would add some other grains separately, for instances as for
the Molt and Cold Temps.or for just a Treat for good behavior.
:D I finally got it ..... hahaha .... Thanks for the
explanation guys.

i'm so furstrated sometime about feeding,I'm not sure what to
do,being new at this. But now i do understand the reasoning for
straight wheat or milo combo. I understand now they all get same
diet. reminds me of boot camp days. about the time I think ive
got them up flyin high and the time i like, then i read about
needing nutrition. So Im feeding wheat, so now i"m gonna do
nutrition-- OK i put a dab of brewers yest in the wheat, put a
little peanut oil on that sos to make it stick, day later they
fly like fireworks that shoots 20 different directions, but
like some one on here said once, they are in the same Zip Code.
Sometimes i want to quit trying, if it were not for this site, I
would, but i keep trying. Some say feed mix, well to me at
first i thought store bought pigeon feed was the mix, then i
find out mix is any thing you want to mix togather and get it
on. Some say dont feed scratch feed because of canker, well i
dont, but had a bird that had it !! I think my birds hate to see
me comming with a feed can, not to mention acv etc. I know its
not as bad as i make it, but im stuck with indecisions. thanks
{chesley} hey hey hey!

I bought a kit from Tony last year and i also have a family of
Easley rollers that were gifted to me by a good friend 5 years
ago. I tried the wheat and Milo thing and controlling the amount
of food they eat. I tried different grain mixes for six months
to get more performance out of my birds. The results have been
amazing. Everyday i fly they kit well and roll their little
hearts out. I have only had one fly out in four months and it
showed back up the next day. I want to say the birds i got from
Tony are amazing. I'm seriously thinking about flying a regional
competition in 2013. I'm so happy i am moving forward and my
rollers are better then ever. I never imagined it would be this
good.

The results I got was very "drastic". They "slowed" down very
much. Started rolling more rolls together. The only draw back
with just the milo is they are going "up" way too high. Almost
look like gnats in the shy...hehe Iam hoping that the wheat will
bring them back down to a good level.
Little John... sorry about the pm. I"ll get back to it this
afternoon, after church.
