What causes this???

The other day I was cleaning kit boxes and noticed a hen just
squatting on the floor. Her wings were spread out as she tried
to move.. I placed her on a perch but, she couldn't sit on it.
I then places her out in the settling cage to get some sun, she
just stayed in a squatted position on the bottom. She is not
"egg bound"... I am not one for medicating a sick bird but,
this has my curiosity up. Anyone have any idea what this could
be?? She is eating and drinking water, if this helps. What
would be the med I would use to help, if any??

Paul,
Even tho she is in the kit box, my first question would be has
she laid an egg in the past day or so, if so it could be
parathyroid which is a calcium and vitamin D deficiency. Try
giving her some vitamin D and see if that helps. I buy some
cheap Vitamin D capsules and give the when this occurs. Usually
only happens with young hens.

If your suspecting hypocalcemia as the reason your hen is not
standing, giving calcium would be beneficial. Vitamin D is
important in uptake of Calcium from the gut into the blood. If
there is no calcium entering the gut, vitamin D wont have a job
to do. The source of Ca that hens use is mainly from bone
stores, the body will liberate stored calcium in the bone by a
hormone called parathyroid hormone(parathormone). In addition,
PTH acts to stimulate the kidney to keep calcium from leaving
the body and acts to convert vitamin D to its active form in the
gut(so vitamin D can do its job). Just some background
information to guide you.
What feeding regimen are you on? Pellets or grain? Is there grit
available to her(that contains calcium)? Strictly feeding grain
has poor micrnutrients like vitamins and mineral.
Also consider other possible diseases(infectious, not
nutritional) that may cause such signs.

Kevin..... thanks for the break down. I feed grains and they
have access to red grit and calcium and shells but, I have not
given any vitamin D...

Here is an up date on my "sick" hen.... The day after I noticed
her being "down" and was given advise on what I should do. I
isolated her, gave her a "vitamin D" capsule, gave her clean
water with ACV . And yesterday she looked, felt and acted as
good as ever... Thanks for all your advise.

Paul, Glad to hear it. :D As a follow up you might want to give
her some calcium supplement to build up the calcium in her
bones. I use calcium gluconate in the drinking water about every
5-6 weeks during the breeding season. Doesn't hurt to give your
young hens some as well.

I have seen it alot here in Ireland among friends birds. Hen
lays egg and ends up unable to walk. The eggs are usually rough
and shell not as solid as it should be.After calcium/vit. D
birds are ok for next round.
