Cold Weather Breeders

Hey Folks,
Looking for a little guidance here. I live in Northern New York
on the Canadian Border and am getting the itch to start the
breeding season, however, I don't want to lose any little ones
to the elements. We have had an unusually warm winter with very
little snow and alot of ice, but over all very mild. I have had
a BOP issue the last few winters which is new, so I would like
to get an early start so I can get them enough air time before
lock down. So..... when do all you cold weather roller men and
women start your breeding season and do you use any artificial
heating.

Terry.... I live in Ohio. In years past I use to start my
breedings in January. But, do to the very COLD temps we now
have, I started my breedings in mid March early April. I still
get 3 rounds then I separate them. My loft is too large to
heat. Hope this helps. Good luck

Hey Terry, I live in N.C. and we have had a very mild winter so
far, and I have a reason this year to breed early. I have a
light in my loft to give my birds a little extra daylight, but
like Windjammer, I too have a large loft that is far to big to
heat. I'd say give it a try with a few pairs just to see what
happens, but yeah, these mild temps might help ya out some.
Ideally, I would wait till March. I have not lost any babies to
the cold this year, during those few days the temps were low,
and I was worrried as the parents were no longer covering the
squeakers up. I use hay as nesting material. Hope that helps a
little... I have also been feeding up my breeders, so they have
plenty to raise thier young'uns with. Good luck! ;D

Hi Terry I live in Michigan so you and I have just about the
same weather now I dont know how your loft is set up but I can
breed year round. I have pair breeding pens and dont breed open
loft so I know for sure who mom and dad are.
The way mine are set up I have a light in ever cage and when the
pairs lay ther eggs I turn the light on in that cage for a
little extra heat it works great and so far I have not lost one
baby hope this helps ya it is a lot of work but it works well

Scott..... sounds like you got a good thing going. Is it
possible to see some photos of your breeding set-up?? I could
possible do something like that myself...Thanks

this helps if you need better pics let me know I am about the
worst at taking pics lol

Thanks for the replies. I think I am going to set up a few pair
and see how it goes. Scott you have a nice set up. Are they
mees? I have got a pair of mee's that look just like that
pair.

Thanks and no those are a pair of Masons that I have but there
is nothing wrong with a good pair of Mees

Scott, Just getting ready to put the doors on my second rack of
breeding boxes. I think I'll be switching over to the outside
feeding trays like you have. Inside with the lights on the water
doesn't freeze, but I have 4 pair that have taken the habit of
roosting on the tops of the milk jugs. Results are no eggs and
the jugs are stuck together. :( If you have a minute can you
post a close up of your feeding setup on the doors and any
siggestions. Thanks, Mitch
