If it was easy everyone would have great birds.
With that said, a lot of trial and error in following the basics
of animal husbandry is the way most of us breed.
If it works use it ,if it doesnt try a different bird(s).
A lot of times it is simply a matter of trying different matings
til you find just the right one. Breed back onto that pair with
the best performers. Try not to get too tight in the family and
you can breed from them forever.
It can be as easy or as complicated as you want to make it.
Keep good records so you can find the mistakes which are more
       frequent than the rewards.

Thanks folks, very informative for a new flyer. I understand
the breeding outlined in the original post. I don't understand
the actual mechanics behind it. The gentleman I got my birds
from was getting out of the sport due to BOP losses, many talk
about losing this percentage, that percentage of thier young
birds each year. Then there are young birds doing what young
birds do and they take time to reach thier potential. So how do
you balance finding out what you have in the air, discerning
what young birds have the most potential with pulling them for
your breeding program. what you want to do. It seems to me if
you fly your birds long enough without pulling the ones you want
for your breeding program you'll be breeding the best son that
is left with the mother and the best daughter that is left with
the father, etc. In a nutshell, when do you decide to transfer
a bird to the breeding pen? I think that makes sense? No?
       Thanks, Paul

       WELCOME Paul!!

My reason for bastardizing the line breeding schedule is one of
attrition. If the program is working and selection of only the
best traits is rigidly followed discarding the previous breeders
in favor of their progeny is part of the process. By discarding,
I mean from that particular line, not from use in my loft, they
still serve a useful function as kit birds or fosters.

I fly in one of the worst B.O.P. areas but with precautions
losses can be minimized. I have used my yearlings for breeders
but they go back into the air after the breeding season.

From another of your posts you mention how you acquired your
birds. I do not know where you got them but they are not what I
would hope for you and your son to start with. If possible, I
urge you to buy, beg or borrow the best three birds you can. If
possible, see them fly. That is not always the option, so try to
get a start from one of the trusted men on this list. Foremost,
I would recommend Tony and his Ruby strain. If you can buy
enough to fly and then start with the three best of your tested
birds as breeders and the rest, including the birds you have now
       as fosters.
I wish you and your son the best!
       Take car
       Thom

Hey Thom, how are you my old friend. I have been out of
circulation for awhile due to health reasons but on the mend
now. Hope all is well with you. If you need any help with that
project I have a Ruby cock up here that will put spin in a
       mallard duck!!!!!
Really he is the real deal as far as I am concerned. You really
need to get up here and see what he is producing.
       Your friend bman

bman, I hope you are feeling better now! Since, you did not post
your name, I will respect your privacy and follow suit. I would
love nothing better then to sweet talk you out of that bird! If
you think it is special, then it must really be something! I
could try an outcross from the same family! :)
I have lost your email address, so if you don't mind, email me
so I can capture it. I look forward to talking with you my
       friend.
       Take care
       Thom
