Flying young Rubys in general

Are their certain things to look for at certain ages,when you
start flying young birds?? For instance,when first starting to
fly should you be concerend with the birds just kitting?? Then
what follows?? Some tail ridding?? Then, do some start to do
single flips?? And is their a time frame that certain things
should start happenings?? At what age do they generally start
doing rolls with any depth to them?? I think Iam abit confussed
with what things should follow what, as far as growth patterns..
And what to look for as the birds advance in age.. Can anyone
get me started in the right direction. I know with my
Fireballs, I know what to look for as they age and at waht time
frame they should be doing things.. My Ruby's Iam not quite
sure of..... If you need more infor about my youngsters I'll
gladly provide what ever you need..

Here is what I have observed with my young Rubys. 4-6 months I
get short rolls or single flips depending on the bird. I was
unable to fly them much this summer because of the heat but in
the last month they have had much more fly time. This morning I
had a grizzle hen bust loose with 5-10 footers and she has only
single flipped very little. My older kit 8-10 months old they
are beginning to really crank. Yesterday was a disaster. The
wind got up 30 minutes after release I finally got the last 4 in
at dark. But this morning they we getting it on. Flew at least
an hour. Be patient with them because the roll and kitting is in
these birds. Enjoy !!!

Don't fly Rubys but have to deal with 30 mph winds most every
day-- blowing 25 + today and hens Look GREAT can't wait until
11/18 when Joe Emberton comes to my Wif's humble home GOD

Hey Paul, Non-kitting and tree sitting are about the only
cullable offences. I try to give my Rubys plenty of air time,
even in the wind. I fly in a stiff breeze everyday so they just
have to learn and deal with it. A large percentage of my young
birds start by just flipping BUT I watch for the bird that
starts by multible rotations. The ones that start by just
spinning seem to turn out the best but also are the most
dangerious when young. I made the mistake of culling to early
and wasted some potentially good birds. Now I hold off and give
them every chance to learn or cull themselves. I also find that
you can not judge them until half way through their second
flying season and even into the third year. A 10 to 20' young
bird will deepen and tighten up as it ages. They are not toooo
dependent on feed, just never take them from a mix to straight
wheat in one day, lawn darts! :(

Great info thanks guys I my self will be working with a small
group of rubys this year but I think my wife is going to steel
this blood line from me she wants her own line to work with and
it sounds like this family will be great for her to start out
with. She has helped me with the birds for the last year and has
done very well with them

Thanks all.........Thom,after our last email I have been flying
my youngsters 8 days straight now. They have diffinately tighten
up their kitting, added some height and added more minutes to
flying time. More birds are doing single or mulit flips, but
still flying straight. At least now I have some guidelines to
follow. I don't have any cullable traits as of yet, thanks
GOD..

Hey Paul, I would just keep doing as you are. Get them as much
air time as possible before the hawks shut you down. Keep their
feed at least in the 1 1/2 tbs. per bird range but I would feed
them 2 tbs. each and see if they fly longer and slow down some.
The longer they function as a kit the better their flying habits
will become. Your wind problem is as bad as mine, so be careful
and never fly them in a down draft.

Thom..... I put them up this morning. I realy like the way they
are comming together. Had 2 Cooper attempts. Must be a
juvinele.. I yelled as it flew after one of the birds, then it
darted away back towards the tree line down the road. But, they
just kept flying as if nothing had happened. Great weather this
mornen too.

Hey Paul, I am glad it is working for you! :) I lost a good 20'
young cock last Friday to a cooper hen. There were three of them
and they attacked over and over for two hours. While they were
squabbling over my cock, I managed to get the kit in and
trapped. I'm in lock down until next year. :(
