Temperature effect on performance ?

Just wondering if any of you guys have had any experience with
type of performance in different temperatures. Not severe
differences just 40 degrees to 70 degrees Fahrenheit. I flew 19
/2011 birds this am temp was 40d F high blue sky slight breeze.
Flew same kit 2 days before at 65d F. Both days they kitted well
, flew same amount of time roughly but on warmer day their
rolling performance was much better at 65 then at 40 d they did
more routing than rolling. Is this just part of their learning
curve & have nothing to do with temp. or have others noticed
this.

Hey Russ, I will take a stab at it. My birds seem to do better
on cool days then hot but I am talking about 70 vs 90 or 100. I
have not noticed any big difference at the temps. your are
talking about. In all fairness, I have not tried to track their
work rate or performance by temp. I am locked down for the
remainder of this year because of the hawks but I will keep this
in my mind until spring and see if I can get a feel of it. Any
and everything we learn can only help! :)

Flew A kit all hens Except 1 COCK on Thursday wind 25 to 40 temp
was in 50's not much happening
flew last Sunday morning wind 25 to 35 temps around 40 they were
GREAT first 10 min. then went flat but were good enough to win
region 6B have to let them warm up a little - mine didn't do
much all summer long- started getting better as soon as it
started getting cooler-- I think My rollers do better in cooler

Thanks guys gave a days rest & flew this am 40deg. good kit only
small amount of rolling. Gonna start adding temps & wind to my
day journal maybe see a pattern. Mine do seem to perform better
in 65-70 deg. weather.

Hi Ross how cold was it at night if it was 40 in the day time
and lets say in the low 30 at night it might be a feeding
problem they use up a lot of energy tring to stay warm and dont
fly as well the next day I have ran in to this here in Michigan.
But I am new to this also so this is just an idea try to up ther
feed a little this worked well for me

The colder it gets the more the feed requirement changes. Here
in the desert in Las Vegas my birds require little food in the
summer, but once we get in the 50's the food requirement doubles
and they require a better protien mix with popcorn. Your birds
will adapt to the conditions they live and fly in. Pigeons have
a normal temperature of 106 and when it gets cold it requires
much more fuel to maintain that. Regardless to where they live
and how they adapt, I believe severe temperatures either way
they will not want to perform or fly. I get pissed at guys that
let their birds out here in the 95 -100 temperatures. Once it
hits 90 I don't fly, and preferably not over 85. On the rare
occasion we get a below 90 day with a little cloud cover and
humidity in the summer the birds have a great time and it shows
in their performance. Adjust your feed for the cold and
experiment to see what works for your family of birds, but don't
fly them in extreme temperatures as there is no benefit to doing
that. Just my opinion and experiences. Don M macsrollers Enjoy

Thanks Don for the help on this one I my self dont know that
much about getting rollers to fly well I just know what works
for me and I am still learning like a lot of guys and gals it is
good to here from guys like you and Mr Thom , Mr Williams, and I
my self would like to thank all of you for your time and help.

In my opinion, the temperatures are a big factor in the
performance of our birds. In most regions, there is a big
weather change between the regional compeittions and the finals,
either in the the World Cup Fly in the Spring, or the NBRC
National Championship in the fall.We have heard some guys
comment that the scores of kits in the finals are lower because
the judges are tighter. While that may account for a part of it,
the other issue is the weather change..from cool days to hot
days in the Spring...and from warm days to very cold nights in
the Fall. Few guys, including myself, are able to make the
adjustment well to keep their birds on point. Personally, I
always wrestle with whether to give them a greater volume of
lower quality (protein) feed or lesser volume of higher quality
feed when the nights turn cold. The very thing that produces the
extra body heat they need can also shut down their
performance.....
