I'm Running for President!

I just wanted to post a little something about myself and what I
want to bring to the table if elected as the NBRC President.
I am running against Don M. from Las Vegas. Don and I are pretty
close in our beliefs and I feel we BOTH would do a great job if
elected. I hope Don will also post so that he can put in his
two cents.
Don is a great guy and great roller flier and I would be honored
to serve him if I dont make the cut.
Anyway....Here you go!!
Hey All!!!
Well, I want to start off and say that Don is a top-notch
roller flier and has all the knowledge and experience to be a
fine President. I think we both have our strong and weak points.
I honestly think you could close your eyes and roll the dice and
either one of us would be a good pick. So I hope that makes it
easier to vote...LOL.
As far as the Article about myself in the Bulletin, George
was right, I never heard a thing about submitting and article.
As you all know that I like to leave LONG posts so a little
something about myself would have been AOK. Although I was not
happy that I did not get the chance to right a little article in
the bulletin...it is now water under the bridge.
I will talk a little bit about me-
My name is Paul Fullerton, I am 39 years young. I am married
to my lovely wife Marie; I have a 22-year-old son Gage,
20-year-old daughter Alyssa, 12-year-old Son Mason and
18-month-old Daughter Alexa. I reside in Woodland Ca. and have
pretty much lived in Yolo County outside of Sacramento my whole
life. I grew up in a small farming town with a population of
1303. Esparto is my hometown and is known for its agriculture
and livestock.
Leadership-
I have quite a bit of experience in leadership and it
started at a young age. I was selected to a Teen Leadership
Conference at UC Davis in my youth. I have held
Offices/Chairman positions in the following organizations.
President Esparto 4-H, Senior Class President 1990, President
Round Robin and Showmanship Yolo County Fairs, Chairman Almond
Festival Car Show Committee 8years total, Youth Leader American
Dairy Goat Association, 4-H All Star, State Farmer Degree FFA,
4-H Regional Demonstration Day Committee member and Judge, Auto
Extrication Lead Instructor Yuba College Fire Academy, Head
Personal Trainer Muscle World Gym, Wrestling Coach Pioneer High
School/Douglas Jr. High, Regional Director 9B since 2006,
President of the NCRC, Certified Fire Instructor CSFM, Policy
and Procedures Committee UCDFD, Apparatus Replacement Committee
UCDFD, Guest Speaker (UCD Biology 10 Class (man-made evolution),
Fire Captain (7years) and that is just to name a few.
I have also attended numerous leadership summits and seminars
over the years. I know what it takes to lead and I also know
that if the EC and membership is failing, it starts at the top.
I really feel that to be a leader you have to be a people person
and be able to handle diversity, I feel that my 23 years
experience in the Fire Service, dealing with many different
walks of life in emergency and non-emergency situations gives me
a deep understanding of PEOPLE! My athletic background has
also helped me develop Teamwork and working with many different
personalities achieve a common goal
My Family makes up and the small town I grew up in helped make
me a rounded leader. Let me explain- my parents are from
different worlds so to speak. My Father is 84 years old and is
100% ARKANSAS and owned his own Auto Repair Shop until his
retirement. My Mother is 22 years his youth is a mover and a
shaker and her life revolved around business, community and
motivational speaking. Basically what I am saying is that I
have the trust of a small town boy, the drive and skills to lead
from my business savvy mom and the good ole boy Southern
Attitude from my Father. My Dads family always called my
brother and I CalArkie's Meaning Californian and Arkie
(Arkansas). I think it’s a nice blend!
What am I going to do to make the NBRC better?
I may shoot myself in the foot, but the NBRC is at a
crossroads so to speak. The organization is at a point that many
other livestock or animal organizations were at about 20 years
ago. Many organizations get to a point where technology, old
school thoughts and new school thoughts collide. We are at that
point. The NBRC is going to have to make some tough choices so
that it can move forward as an organization. The NBRC has to
search for it roots. The roots of the NBRC love the common love
of the Birmingham Roller. To do that we have put the Love and
Future of the Animal before ANYTHING in the here and now. We
have to look at the future not the past. Remember History is
made every second! If we keep looking back we will never move
forward!!!
This organization is in NEED of a Breed Standard. The breed
standard should be based on performance since the Birmingham
Roller is a PERFORMANCE BREED. The Breed standard is a Must
in any organization to give breeders a “blue print” on what the
NBRC deems to be the Minimum accepted traits to be used from
breeding. The days of “Everyone just knows is over”. If
everyone “just knows the standard” There would be no
arguing…right? The standard is not LAW it is a guide …nothing
more and nothing less. Those who say a standard does not work
need to look no further then the hundreds of organizations that
oversee a breed/breeds that have a Breed Standard. These same
organizations also have competitions, some have 4-5 times the
membership of the NBRC, some have a lot more money invested and
a lot more politics and they work. The breed standard is well
“standard” in these organizations. Being an organization like
the NBRC that is for the Betterment of the Breed …MUST have a
standard. The standard can be changed and adapted over time and
it is the Roots of the breed.
As far as the rules for competition, again the collision of
young, old and technology. The main issue is that the cart was
put before the horse many moons ago. Competition between animals
is usually to “highlight” the breed standard. Does the animal
look and or perform like the Standard. If no, the ranking or
points will be lower for the animal or teams of animals. If yes
they will be higher. Competition brings out the breeders to show
how close there animals are to the standard or at time better
then the standard. When a standard for the animal is in place,
then the judge will judge to the organizational standard and not
the judges own standard. It also helps the judge to have
something to compare to or fall back on with a standard and not
just saying because I said so. This is the exact thing I
teach to future breeders in my Man-made evolution class at UC
Davis. As the Standard is formed all the other pieces start
falling into place.
One thing we must all remember is nothing looks as good on
paper. To get a true feeling you have to apply it and see how
it works and adjust as needed. Those who say it will not work
have to try it first. I know it will work because I have already
seen it work over and over again. Breeders are breeders and the
principals are the same across the board, does not matter if you
are breeding dogs, cats, mice, alligators…. breeding principles
are the same across the board.
I feel once we get passed the hump we will ALL look back on
this as a bump in the road…or as many organizations look back
and say…. What took us so long to change? I also know change is
hard and I especially with Firefighters…”Progression in the Fire
Service is impeded by 100 years of tradition” That is an OLD
saying in the fire service. Change is good if it is done right
and with thought. I feel that until you try it you can’t say
you don’t like it.
I feel this process with bring everyone back to the ROOTS….
putting into words what this birds is now and should be into the
future and stamping it should bring us all back to why we like
what we see in the air.
Clear with no Agenda-
I want to be open and honest. I don’t want to hide anything.
I have no secret agenda. My only agenda is to move this
organization forward and try to bring us all together as one.
Bring the love back to the bird and the fellowship. Not the
love of Money, Fame or what have you. Respecting every fellow
flier regardless of how they fly their birds. We have to
remember that all our stories are the same on why we raise
pigeons and why we love them. We need to go back to that. You
CAN be competitive and honorable at the same time. Basically I
am for the NBRC as a whole not a select few.
Pigeon Museum:
This is something that has to be tackled. WE NEED TO MAKE A
GOOD DONATION> we are the second most popular pigeon breeds in
the worlds. WE are second to nobody except the Racer Guys. We
NEED to represent with a large donation. If we can spend
10-15,000.00 for a weekend convention, why can’t we spend that
much on the History of pigeons so that OUR BREED can be
represented, as it should for all to see? Education is the key
to a future of any organization…if just 3 or 4 kids visiting the
museum see a top notch area for the NBRC and get into
pigeons…they may the next William Pensom, Don O., Norm Reed,
Guil Rand …you know what I mean. To me it like having a
National Auto Museum and Ford not donating or only putting in a
small amount. There are three R’s in
Pigeons…RACERS>>>>>ROLLERS>>>>>>and The REST! I will push to get
a sizeable donation from the NBRC. I myself would be willing to
go a year without a convention and make a donation to the museum
and have a mini convention at the Museum site.
These are just a few things that I am willing to tackle. In my
administration there is no such thing as a dumb question and
EVERYONE on the EC will have a voice. Oh and that brings up
another point. If you are not going to be involved in the
EC…then don’t be on the EC. We really have to dig in and make
some rules to be on the EC. If computers and emails do all the
EC then you MUST have a computer to be on the EC…how can you
vote on a subject if you have not even been able to be involved
in the debates. Phone in votes…. NOPE…I think those are not
acceptable. I will never call an EC member give them my side of
the agenda and then say give me a vote. You have to be involved
if you are going to make sound decisions for the NBRC or you
region. We really have to come up with some updated EC member
rules.
CANADA----I WILL PUSH TO GET YOU GUYS FLYING THE CHAMPIONSHIP
FLY>…Again our ROOTS…We need to support anybody we can and that
means our neighbors in Canada. This will be one of my first
orders of business. We have to PRACTICE WHAT WE PREACH…. For the
Betterment of the Birmingham Roller…how else to better the breed
then to allow more to be involved.
Well…As Forest Gump Would Say…”That is all I got to say about
that”. These were just some things that I see need to be
fixed. or tweaked or at least looked at . I want transparency
and I want an E.C. that is looking out for the NBRC as a whole
and not for individual agendas. I want people to speak their
mind without getting bashed. Everyone has a voice.
In the E.C. Items will not be tabled if they don’t pass. They
will be tweaked until they pass.
If ANYONE had any questions of me feel free to ask. I will
answer to the best of my ability. I have background in raising
animals and leading people. If I accomplish nothing in my term
I will let you know that you will get nothing less then 110%
from me. I will be fair and give everyone a voice. I am in
this for the many and not the few. The many is what makes and
organization. Usually a few, is what breaks and organization.
You will get nothing less then honesty and I will allow thinking
outside the box. The time is now to put the NBRC and the
Birmingham Roller number one and put we number 2.
I would like to also give the much respect to Don M., Again, him
and I are on the same page on many issues and as I have promised
him and all the members of the NBRC, if I am not elected, Don
will have my full support as an EC member and RD for 9B. I am
proud to be apart of the NBRC.
As far as the birds and pigeons…no need to explain when I
started or the love I have for the bird. As my old man would
say…”Don’t need to explain, I’m here ain’t I “

Paul,
There is no question there are 2 great choices for the office of
president this year. Either of you would do a great job, I
believe. I wish you luck in this endeavor!!

Paul, you have my full support ! I like your vision for the NBRC
and your ideas. I hope everyone will rally around and support
you. Don is a great guy in the sport also, no one can say
different !

i thought the vice president get the president job after the
president does he 2 years that's what i was told a few years ago
and when did they change the rule(s) on that if they did i sure
missed it that's for your guys answer on this donnie james
