Hey Scott, Consider using a drop trap instead. A 4" P.V.C. 45%
fitting will let the birds in, keep them from getting back out
and best of all most preditors can not fit through.
Take care my friend

I replaced all of my bobs with the 4" 45% PVC a couple of years
ago. The birds show a clear preference to the pipe fittings over
the bobs. I have never had a bird get out of the pipe fitting,
but have seen birds get out of bobs often.

Keith,
Is it harder to trap train the young with the drop traps? With
the bobs, I raise them and let the youngsters go in and out the
trap so they get used to it. How do you handle that with drop
traps?

I use the good old fashioned drop down method. I have a panel
in the top of the flight cage that opens. I open it about 1' x
1' when they are squeakers and put them on top of the cage.
They figure out really quick how to get down into the pen.
Once they are trained (usually a couple days) I close it down to
about 4 x 6 hole and that's it!
I was surprised how little the hole can be and still work. I
have closed it down to 4 x 4 and they still go in, but I feel
better leaving them a little extra room. Since the hole is in
the top of the pen I've not had anything else come into the
loft. Most varmits don't want to drop straight down.
The beauty of my setup is that I can close up the loft, leave
the "trap" open and go away. Any late arrivals (or in the case
of the other day hawk attack that scatters the birds) can still
get into the flight pen and are safe until I return.

Cliff,
I have a small settling cage that I can push the young birds
through it the first time or two. 2' x 2' X 1' It usually only
takes twice. Once you have some older birds that are trapping,
they teach the younger ones. May only have to help them through
once. Once they trap you can use bigger settling traps that let
them get on top of the box where you can't reach them.

i needed another troap, saw your suggestion about the 4'' pipe&45
0/0.built one,run a bird through it, worked, but i was uneasy
about the open pipe! I took a cd put a srew on left side that
held it to the door openning, run a screw from behind the cd on
the right side into a piced of dowel to make an attachment so as
to rotate cd to the left to open up the trap. cd flsh also ward
off bop.thanks for your input."chess"
