In the past I posted articles here about
in-breeding, line breeding and out breeding. They are very
informative. Ask Tony to provide you a link to the articles and
just read them, The Line-breeding article will provide you with
the answers you are seeking. Good luck.

Jeff, my main cock is the offspring from 3 generations of
brother to sister matings. I however do not breed full siblings
often. All of my click pairs are cousins and all of my birds
have been line bred since the 70's.

Jeff

This is just my opinion, and know that I dont consider myself a
top breeder, although I have raised livestock all my life.

Dont breed close, just for the sake of tight breeding. Have a
purpose in mind for every mating you put together as well as a
goal for your loft. When I say goal, I mean something specific,
not just "to raise a better roller". A goal like to build on kit
sensitivity and team work, or to improve on the overall wing
style, or minimize the out flying, etc.

If a more distant related bird produces you more the result you
want as a goal, use it instead of the close relation. I say
produces, you must learn what a bird can produce to make good
judgements about how to pair it and that may take a couple of
years trial. As you work the bloodline you will get a feel for
how a bird may produce based on what its relatives do,
correlated to the birds performance.

I know inbreeding/line breeding is all the rage right now. Im
not saying it isnt a sucessful method, but just know that its
not the only method to achieve good results in the broodpen.
Some of the winningest fliers in US dont breed tight, or even
within the same family. Like said at first, put your pairs
together with a purpose in mind, not just because they're
closely related.

Some of my best rollers have come from bro/sister mating. There
is a science to it, no question about that, but it has been used
as a tool for many many years by some of the best out there. I
would be interested to hear the reasons why or why not
inbreeding is an effective tool in raising these rolling
pigeons.

Hi LittleJohn, okay, just to throw this out there...I have been
breeding my Ruby family for pushing 20 years, they express the
primary traits I am after. I think I have mostly eliminated the
negative traits I don't want: rolling down, non-kitters, some of
that basic stuff.
They express good quality rolling, velocity, depth, control and
type and so forth. My question to you is what benefit would it
be to my program at this point to breed a brother to sister? If
my birds are expressing homozygous traits in high percentages,
how would this type of pairing improve the bloodline?
Am interested in your response. Thanks! :D

Tony,

Your family of birds is "true". You have accomplished this
over many years of selective breeding, and kudos to you for it.

The only way a brother sister cross would improve your birds, in
my opinion, is if you have a brother and sister who have
exhibited everything you want in a roller, and you want to
increase the homozygosity of those traits that they possess.

Again, it would be another road to travel, as you would have
both good and bad possibles from that cross, to take the best
from that mating and move forward would be the move to make.

I think for the average backyard flier, who just wants to
enjoy his birds and not worry about a "breeding method", then
this water may be a little deeper than they care to tread....and
thats ok.

I have never competed, but I have raised rollers for a day or
two, and one of these days I would like to try my hand at the
competition fly thing...even if I only do it one time.

others--I want mine to be as good aspossible and to improve I
need to compete learn how others manage their birds ---what
family is right for ME-- TRY IT ITS FUN-- and the friendships
