Who can tell me about the Crystal Palace strain?

I've been given 3 pair old birds of the Crystal Palace line. No
reason to doubt the guy's claim that the line is clean. He's
had them a long time, but now rarely does anything with them as
he's branched out into other breeds.
I'm not much of a photographer, so the picture doesn't do the
bird justice. One thing I want to point out is that the eye is
actually a two tone orange. Outter rim is orange and inner ring
towards pupil is yellow orange. Not sure why that doesn't show
       up in the picture.
I'd be interested in hearing from others what is known about the
line as I've not found much on the web about them.

I've never heard of there being a "Crystal Palace" strain but
I'd assume that the birds supposedly go back to MRS 521 aka the
Crystal Palace Cock. To say it's pure is very hard for me to
believe unless it's by someone who is a die hard
       Pensomnite/pedigree breeder.
The Crystal Palace Cock got its name from winning the Crystal
Palace Pigeon Show and it was the first Birmingham Roller to win
the show. Its band is MRS 521 and is known by both its band the
CPC name. It was a red spangle just like the bird you posted BUT
the CPC was a bull eyed bird and didn't have orange eyes.
About its performance, I have no clue but I do know it's one of
the most famous Pensom birds and took 1st at the CP show. Also a
side note for hardcore fanciers who are absolutely against soft
and "funky" colors, MRS 521's granddam was a cream badge hen so
cream is in the 521 line. So not only was it bred from soft
color birds, it also had bull eyes.

Hi Mark, you might try contacting Ray Sanchez, he is very
knowledgeable in general about the Crystal Palace bird. I assume
these birds you have are down from that line.
Just as a bit of information, I am told by Sal Estrada that the
Ruby Rollers line can be traced back to the Crystal Palace cock.
I guess that is where the red bar is from in my birds?? Even Ray
thought this might be the case as well. Anyway, that's all I
       got. Good luck!

       Mark,
Tou is correct the Crystal Palace cock, band number MRS 521-26
was one of Pensom's favorite birds as it was a show champion.
Not sure how it performed, never read anything about his
performance but I am sure he had some for Pensom to be so high
on him. Never read anything that detailed how much of that blood
made it to the US in the early imports but I am fairly confident
that after 85 yrs the line is not clean. How do the young you
got perform? Good luck with them!
       Keep em spinning :D

       Joe,
I agree, claims of purity have to be taken with a grain of salt.
The family of birds is tight and typical, not a lot of
variation in type, so they have been close bred for awhile. I'm
told fertility is down and ratio of cocks to hens is really off
       with few male offspring.
Won't know about performance until next year. I'll pump out one
kit and give them a try. When I was looking at the flock of
about a dozen birds there was one old cock that would flip
indoors flying from one side of the loft to the other. His flip
was very tight, fast and clean. HOpe that translates to
       performance in the air.
       Will keep everyone posted.
       Thanks

Very good response Joe. That's the thing, with a bird that is
that old, to say the line is still pure is a very hard thing to
       claim.
Again, it's all about how the bird performs. If it performs
       well, stock it.

Finally found the references needed in the 1967 Roller Digest
(by the Pensom Roller Club). A couple of importations carried
direct offspring of the Crystal Palace cock, most notably (at
least to me) was Smith who used the offspring heavily. In fact
he and Father Schlatterman mated brother and sister of the cock
to preserve the blood of 521.
But as someone else said, it's all academic debate if they don't
       perform.
