Medications

Hi all, are antibiotics and medications being abused by pigeon
breeders? To many times one depends on his own self diognostics
when dealing with sick birds! Are they being treated with the
right medication for the specific disease or infection? Is the
cause of the bird being sick a viral infection, bacterial
infection, worms? With all of the available non Veterinary
prescribed antibiotics and cure alls are we doing more harm than
good to the birds by random self diognostics? It has been proven
that many of the avalible antibiotics today are useless due to
the fact of over useage and improper dosages, having made the
virus immune to many medications! Today there are more and more
new strains of pigeon viruses popping up all over the world.
Veterenarians are suggesting that antibiotics should only be
made available through their practise because far too many are
abusing them. Baytril one of the last remaining effective
antibiotics, is an example of abuse, which is why it was made
only avalible through a Vet!
What are your thoughts on this?

I really am not sure if they are over used. I prefer to
vaccinate rather than medicate. I vaccinate annually for
Paratyphoid and PMV. I keep some 4 in 1 on hand but haven't used
it in years. I use ACV weekly and probiotics monthly. I rarely
have a sick bird so no need to medicate. I also rarely bring in
a strange bird and on the rare occasion when I do it is isolated
for at least 3 weeks. Most of the guys I know practice similar
prevention measures therefore medication is rarely required. ;D
Keep em spinning
