Another way to look at this is if she was truly a prepotent bird
and the "loft franchise" as you put it then she should have
produced progeny that are as good or better than she is.
Therefore she to is expendable. If she hadn't done that then
maybe she wasn't as valuable as some thought. I doubt that
Pensom would have had a second thought about culling her if the
situation dictated it. :'(

Joe, that's not happening, it doesn't happen in horse racing and
its not happening in Rollers.
Raul, I did not call BS on an opinion of loft management, I
called BS on the quick decision to rid a bird of this caliber. I
know human nature would make someone very hesitant.

How does anyone really know how good she was - I voted no just
on what I've learned by studying her but I also feel that some
of the revolutionized birds are perhaps even better today than
any rollers back then - but how many of them revolutionized
birds may go back to her also - I am sure many birds produced
from her were quality birds but as You's all know its
impossible to have the exact duplicate - or is it ? and You's
all admit to much culling - Perhaps many True Champions ? ;)

No one culls arbitrarily. There is always a reason, therefore I
doubt very many "true champions" have been culled. Tree sitters,
non kitters, non-performers, early landers and other
unacceptable habits do not turn in to "true champions". birds
that develop these habits rarely change :-[ . Enough said.

John, Its all good my friend ;D Im new to rollers, I am just
now flying this years birds bred. I dont know as yet if I have a
prepotent bird, or breeding pair amongst my breeders (Rubys).
It will be atleast another 2yrs before I can say I do! I do have
some very promising young birds in the air however that are
coming from 2 particular breeding pairs ;)
Yes it is a difficult choice to have to cull a bird of quailty
such as 514, Ive had to make that choice with other breeds of
pigeons and animals! I would not have culled her for a simple
cold or treatable cocci, but after treatment for a few days and
she was still sick yes she would be gone! I am new to rollers
not pigeons, or animal husbandry, and have had experiance with
various sicknesses, with all types of birds and animals.I can
say from my experience, it is my opinion that culling is the
best "cure"

Raul, your absolutely correct, but again Tony asked a simple
question and it became a loft management thread.
"Would you have culled the famous "Pensom" 514 hen if it had
gotten sick or would you have medicated it?"
How many times have you read on this sight someone asking for
medical advise, all the time.
I think we would all medicate first.

"Sick" covers a lot of ground, everything from a simple one-eyed
cold to PMV. Some diseases you can diagnose and medicate. Others
are so virulent that you risk you whole loft by not culling the
bird. A prepotent bird that is a carrier of latent paratyphoid
is of no use and should be culled immediately. Question is not
one which lends itself to a simple yes or no answer.
