Tom, My experience on YB has been exactly like yours. Now if it
was an old bird that was integral to my breeding program, I
would probably give it more consideration but based on
experience the chances of saving it are very low.

Well - Well , I am 1 for 1 and doing good so far - 1st very sick
bird pretty much limp in the hand when I found him ( young bird
) is now doing just great with the kit - I did however spend
alot of time hand feeding and watering him so You must have the
extra time in your day to make a hard effort in saving a bird or
birds - and I will continue doing so because I am responsible
for bringing them into this world - Mike " keep all of them
spinning "

Lets all think about what Tony asked;
"Would you have culled the famous "Pensom" 514 hen if it had
gotten sick or would you have medicated it? What would you do
with a key foundation bird in your loft? What are your
thoughts?"
8 people so far would have culled it. I think it is safe to
say that the 514 hen would have been your most favorite roller
in the loft, a cherished icon for you and the envy of all your
friends and club members. Lets just see how this would look;
you have what is probably the best roller in the United States,
your friends come over and say; where is the HEN? and you reply;
it got sick so I killed it. I can't believe you guys would be
so quick to destroy it. I don't think that is the route Pensom
would have took, I don't think it's the route you would take,
not with a bird that can take more then a lifetime to find or
produce. Think about how Pensom felt about this bird.
I would go as far as to bring it to a veterinarian, this is a
GRAND CHAMPION for God sakes.
It's really very simple, tell us what you would really do and
forget about the tough guy disciplinarian who would
automatically destroy it. Tell us what you would do after the
initial panic wore off.

John,
I grew up on a Wisconsin dairy farm and stock is stock period.
If your livelihood is at stake then a sick animal is euthanized
humanely. That is my mentality period.
Everyone seems to want to surmise what Bill Pensom would have
done when in fact he did not realize for many years what he had
in her. I am confident if she had gotten sick in her first 5 or
6 yrs she would have been culled. He truly was old school and
that is how sick animals were handled in those days. Most
commercial operations still operate that way. It is only when we
make pets of our birds or other animals that we lose that
detachment.

Hi Joe, the context of Tony's question was based on after Mr.
Pensom knew it's greatness. Just image if he had pulled the
trigger in it's early years, this discussion wold not be taking
place.
Joe I'm sure your dad called the veterinarian from time to time
and if the illness was epidemic and untreatable the Vet would
have made that call and I would bet your dad would have asked if
there was anything he could do. The point is 514 was the best of
the best and it's not so easy just to write it off.

The Gospel according to Pensom!
In my opinion,few words are necessary to cover diseases of
pigeons, although i do not blame anyone for trying to save a
rare bird. It is a fact that we are now able to procure
antibiotics which often effect a cure. If a sick pigeon does not
respond to a treatment after a few days, it is best to get rid
of it. Every fancier has had experiance with sick birds and
many have been cured , (but personally I have never found such
birds to be any great asset to anybody)

I don't think everyone is getting the true spirit of this
QUESTION, this would be an out of the ordinary event a decision
that would be very hard to make - treat or eliminate? I think
you all would put aside your practices for this roller. This hen
is the pinnacle of your loft, the franchise roller, after she's
gone its time to start over.
There's no clone.

and say to 514 you have a runny nose your done! The poll up
above should read, 26 for NO! and I'm going to call BS
otherwise.

John I think most here understood what the question was! You
gave your opinion as those who participated gave theirs. Theres
no need to call others opinons BS!
