so modena bronze color comes from a modena ?? now i am first to
admit i know nothing about color breeding in rollers or any
other breed, pretty yes . but as of yet i sure cant tell you
what color means to anyone unless it is in a show pen or sitten
on a perch.seems to me it's hard enough just to get what you
want in the air... but to each his own , thats what this hobbie
is all about injoyment....

I won't deny that is hard enough to get what you want in the air
but a lot of it depends on the colors/factors in the breeders
you start with. By that I mean, if you start with excellent
spinning indigos, you will raise more of the same. If you start
with excellent spinning reduced, you will get more of the same.
In the Sept '98 issue of the NBRC bulletin, there is an article
interviewing Monty Neible. They ask him : Would you use a red
bird? His reply: I assume you mean recessive red? I don't own
any and probably owned only one or two in my lifetime. However,
I wouldn't hesitate to use one if it was worthy. Most of my
matings are gut feelings. I have only four or five white
wingers. In fact I just gave them all to Dave Kaplon. I've seen
excellent velocity in every color. Doug Brown, Randy Gibson and
John Jones are proof of this. If you enjoy spinners, regardless
of what color they are, they are out there in every color you
can imagine. And YES, to each his own.

thing about it if you went to bruce coopers a lot of his birds
where odd wing or white enders of different colors . montys
birds came from bruce cooper...no cliff color sure dont make um
roll.. on a sad note i found out yesterday bruce has cancer very
bad , please everyone keep him in your prayers..... bruce cooper

Sorry to hear about Bruce Cooper, he is still one of the
greats.
You got to see first hand how breeders can choose what
colors/factors he wants to have in his loft. Certain colors
don't make 'em perform better, and color doesn't keep a bird
from rolling either. It just goes along for the ride.

cliff , i respect everones opion ,but i have to some what
disagree a little , color does play a part in performance in a
lot of lofts....in most cases hard color [ selfs] tend to be
less frequent [ stiff ]. more stable, stronger on the wing.
appear some what faster [ tighter ] in the spin.. soft color
more frequent [ hotter ]. dangerous [ bumpers ] , softer on the
wing.... at lease this is what i have found... i belieave
strongley in color balance breeding.....

I have flown several different families of birds over the past
years and every family I have experience with has specific
traits that will follow certain colors, for instance in one
family the recessive red selfs are super stable while in another
family 8o% of the recessive reds were too hot and would end up
on the ground eventually.....in one of these families every blue
bar I raised made the competition team while the other family
never raised a blue bar that was a scorable bird.....in the
family with the too hot recessive reds a high percentage of blue
checks made the competition team while in the other family a
high percentage of blue checks rolled down. What I am saying is
I believe the traits/colors connection can change from one
family to another......accross the board my best overall birds
have been Andalusian/Indigo and Black. Jay

Tom
We are all free to voice our opinions about these issues. If
anything is proven 100% about Rollers, it is the fact that
different things work for different people. I am glad you found
something that works for you.
I have found that it all goes back to the colors/patterns found
in your base pairs. And I see very few of these "rules" that
transcend family lines, as Jay said. I have seen flyers with
nothing but dark checks do great, and I have seen flyers where
most of their birds tend to be soft feathered do just as well.
It all depends on how they are handled, how they are developed
and how they are prepped before a fly.
Much of the satisfaction of flying Rollers come from all the
experimentation we do to get what we want. Some birds need to be
treated this way and some do better treated another way.
Anyway you do it is fine, as long as you are satisfied with the
results.

Howdy Jay! Haven't talked to you in awhile! It's been a busy
summer....sorry I've sorta been outta touch. How did the
miniconvention go? I hope you have had a good summer with your
birds. Do you want me to send those birds you loaned back to you
for this next breeding season?

Cliff, I have been kinda outta touch also....been working a lot
of hours (62 hours last week in 5 days)......the miniconvention
was good had a good attendance with a lot of good information
shared on breeding, flying and judging....I am now the proud new
owner of the 6 youngbirds that Jon Farr donated. Thanks again
Jon.
The birds have been doing as good as can be expected with me
not having the time to prep them properly.... I flew 2 twenty
bird kits in the NBRC Regional and finished fourth and sixth out
of 20 kits, considering everything I was well satisfied with the
results. Jay
