End of Season breeding

I thought I remembered most of my stuff from years ago, but i
keep getting surprised. So it's the end of the season and
adults are in molt. I had 3 pair with 2 week old young and I
went ahead and pulled the cocks and put them in the stag loft.
Now the young are just barely hanging on and are growing very
slow. 25 years ago I used to do this and the hens would raise
out the last brood of the season. Do you suspect I'm
forgetting some important step or is it just the family I have
now? Regardless I'll handle it differently next year.

Mark I suspect its just the birds. I still do similarly. Some
pairs it works great with others not so much. Some pairs I know
the father or the mother is the more dedicated one so I'll pull
one or the other, knowing before hand which with be faithful.

Mark.... I have always pulled the hen's the cocks do a great job
for me. Always keep them full. 8) Joe

HI MARK- same here Joe I always leave cock they do much better
job--have 1 cock that is feeding 3 now and was feeding 5 until
yesterday-- works full time at his job LOVES little one-- if
they are in floor He will never turn them down for a meal.

You can always leave them in the nest and replace their eggs
with dummies. After the babies are ready to leave the nest you
just remove the pair, babies and dummy eggs.

Okay, here it comes.... What is the reason for pulling either
the hen or the cock ??? ??? ?? Why not just leave "both"
parents until the youngsters are ready to move?? Then split the
pair up... That's how I do it.

Paul.... If you leave the hen they could and would drop another
round of egg's just to be thrown away. :( Joe

Joe... like I said, I split the pair up after I remove the last
round of youngsters I want from them. The hens are put in their
own separate pen or back in a kitbox to fly them out some, not
with any cockbirds until the next breeding season.

Well, now that the temps have plummted from almost 100 degrees
for the past several weeks to down in the high 60's mid 70's.
For the next 10 days the weather
will be "GOOD" for working out in the loft..
Looks like this is the "perfect time" to get in the loft and do
some well needed end of breeding season cleaning.... Got 4
kitboxes, 1 fly pen and 4 breeding pens to get thoroughly
cleaned. Have to order my "winter" feed. Time to keep my eyes
in the skys and study my birds.... Now comes the time to reap
the benifits of this years breeding... Good luck to everyone.
