So many people think they know the concept. Of
breeding pigeos.yea anybody can breed pigeons. My
brothers kid can do this but if you don't know genetics?then I'm
here to tell you
You have no clue what your doing in your loft.a true breeder
Can breed anything if they know this.I've been fortunate
To know a few of these guys who been around pigeons their whole
Life one who knew pensom and one who knew rollers to a tee.
Growing up I've seen a lot of kits and the best that a kit
Could perform.cornell norwood.mike curtis.and my brother randy
barron
these guys could breed a pair of birds and tell you before they
wpuld tell you what color what type
And e.t.c. that's knowing genetics!

you know same of the guys don't care about genetics i'm a few
years into it makes no difference to me and theirs a lot to
learn about the birds ........................donnie james

Biology and Genetics were a major part in my formal profesional
education and it was great aid to understand writings of Levi,
Hollander and Quinn.
Solid knowledge of genetics will definitly increase one breeder
skills, but lack of it does not put you in a grave disadvantage.
IMHO there are two keys to succes in this hoby. One is love for
the breed you working on and the other is strong personal
character of the breeder.

Knowing something about Genetics is certainly a tool in your
breeding tool box. The more you know the better you can use
that tool. I would think knowing the basics of line breeding,
in breeding, some simple recessive and dominant traits, etc is a
very good start that will take you a long way without getting
too involved in the advanced stuff. Paul Conway.

What did the oldtimers know about genetics ? I'll put my money
on those with a little stock sence over a genetics guru anyday.

I agree. The study of Genetics is just a tool. And as a tool,
experience is valuable in learning how to use the tool. Take
"SEX-LINKED" pairings, sure an astute breeder will learn it over
time, but that same info can be learned quicker by reading the
books. Which ever way you learn this stuff, is fine. Experience
is a fine teacher and, if coupled with book knowledge, even
better and quicker. Both are good and both work.

@ 1time1fly, genetics can only give a breeder of anything the
potenial of breeding as good or better birds! what gene is
responsible for the roll? If you or anyone else here knew,
everyone here would have a kit full of champions! Why can non
rollers produce off spring that do roll??
