Question

---------------------------------------------------------
Hello...
My question is with the new cage I've built
and limited space to work with... It's a loft/kit cage... The
top holds 18 flyers and the bottom has 2 individual breeding
stalls... Since I haven't purchased birds yet I'd rather breed
my own flyers... So my question is... Do I try and find the best
pair my money can afford and get some fosters to help or do I
try to get 2 pair and build my family from there...Please any
advice would help... I've been following most of you guys for a
while now and any advice would be appreciated.

Hey Dell, I'm a firm believer in building a family from one pair
of birds. Most strains are built around the cock but a super hen
can also provide a start. If it is possible try to buy the very
best single pair you can afford. Also try to pick them from the
air. Every bird I have comes from a one pair start. Use fosters
and make careful selections and you will soon have the qualities
you want. As important as any thing else, stick with your
choice, do not jump from family to family.

Take care
Thom

Hi Dell,
If your goal is competition, then there are two ways to go
about it. First, check the NBRC
fly archives as well as the world cup archives. See who is
consistanly placing very high in the standings. Once you have
made your choice, contact them and see if they have a pair or
two that they would part with, just know this, NOBODY is going
to sell thier top breeders, NOBODY, PERIOD !! So, you may be
just as well off by asking them to breed you a kit of 20-25
young birds out of thier best pairs, buy those, then fly them
out and choose the best ones to breed from. Get the best birds
you can afford, the rest is up to you to breed, and manage them
correctly. It only takes a couple of seasons to ruin the best
Rollers in the world. Find yourself a mentor who has has been
winning consistantly
and pay attention to what they say. I hope this helpfull, good
luck to you my friend.
James.

Oh by the way Dell,
I forgot about about the second part of your question. If you do
get only two pair of stock birds then yes, I would foster them,
otherwise it will take you a long time to breed a good kit of
youngsters. Foster out three rounds of eggs, and then let your
stock birds raise the fourth round themselves. Ideally, the
person you get your birds from should be willing to mentor you,
its called service after the sale, lol. If you buy them from a
top competitor, nobody will know how to manage the birds better
than the person who bred, and, has been winning with them.
James.

Dell, Dont get taken to the cleaners trying to by birds. Go out
and visit, make some friends and see what you want in the air
and you will also get a gauge on where you need to be at as far
as a standard. If thats not a option then by some young birds
and fly them out and pic what you want from the air. Then you
know what you are breeding out of with no question. In order to
foster I always use Mookees they are a real aggressive pigeon
and I have even hatched chickens under them, no chance of
raising a round by mixing up eggs because they are different by
far in type.

Thanks Ty for the advice... That's what I keep hearing and I
think I'm going to go that route. I'm searching for a kit of
yb's now.

Thanks Ty... I talked to Keith London yesterday and he said he
would help me... I also talked to Tony via email and he gave me
great advice so we'll see... Between them and a few other guys
and this forum I think I'm off to a great start.
