Settling Cage

Local ad on Craigs Lists offers this 4x4 wire cage with roof.
Was thinking of using it as a settling cage for young birds.
Is it too big for a settling cage?

Hey Quailtail, I think you have the right idea as far as the
open wire pen, but the preferred method is a small wire pen
placed on top of the kit box or loft. The picture you show is
actually large enough to BE the kit box. Just cover the sides
once they are settled in to it. Good luck.

Why not have both? Raise it off the ground. Finish the floor
with welded wire or 1/2 inch hardware cloth. There appears to be
doors front and back which is perfect for releasing the kit. Add
perches and a drop trap but instead of wooden sides which are
fixed make removable wood panals. Now with the panals in place
you have a secure kit box and with the panals removed an airier
kit box that is it's own settling cage.
Just a thought :)

also agree with everyone else. You want to be able to remove
the settling cagefrom your loft or kitbox.
This is what I use. Each individual kitbox has it's own
removable settling cage.

i'am with you windjammer , the settling cage should be on the
same opeing as the trap they will be using... mine looks the
same as yours i just added an extra cage that fits onto the
roof......

Hey Paul, did you have to custom cut the wire to make those
pens? Also, do all the birds fit into them or do they just all
go in and out all day?

Tony.. to answer your questions. First of all my "roller"
settling cages are 36"x36"x36". I have a metal break that I can
bend any bendable material up to 36" in width. I just happened
to have a 100' roll of wire at the time. Secondely, you might
not be able to see I have 2 pcs of 5/8 pvc pipe as perches in
each cage. All 25 birds can fit in the settling cage at the same
time. And after my birds are "trapped" trained and settled I
still leave the cages on the kits so the birds can "sun bath" or
take a "natural bath" when it rains.
