I agree with Paul and ask the feed dealer spiciffically if it IS
red wheat. Red from white can be hard to tell just by looking at
it.
Take care
Thom

It depends on how much wheat is used. Loading food with too much
Red wheat can cause Irritation in the bird's stomach that can
lead to other problems. This is caused by the tannin on the
outer layer of the red wheat. White does not have the tannin
that red has. They have same nutritional value.

Hey charles_b, any idea how much is too much? What about when
guys are using wheat to break their birds down, they could be on
this for weeks. In your view, would this be too much for them?

Hey Tony, My feed dealer says that red will keep better then
white and I buy in bulk.
I can check but I think it was because of the moister level of
the white. He only carries red without ordering special.
Take care my friend

In general, red wheat is more dense than white. They have
slightly different levels of gluten, too. Thats why some is used
for bread flour, while other varieties used for diverse
products. they are very simialr, but not the same.
I know what tannins are, but have never heard of there being
enough in wheat hulls to be harmful.
I cannot say why (because I dont know), but my birds perform a
bit different on white or red wheat. I prefer red.
There is a difference in the wheat I use from harvest to
harvest. I also buy in bulk. Each new batch I have to make minor
adjustments in my feeding.

I like the red Wheat also .. but keep in mind that there can be
huge variables in quality which effects the make-up values in
them.. One year I was buying a seed wheat . It was beautiful
Wheat , problem was it was just to good and my birds flew strong
on it. So I cut it with Milo to get the desired effect. Since
then I have gone back to feed Wheat.
