Hey Joe, I am just trying different combonations of feed trying
to find the best for "my" birds. I made the mistake of switching
them from the homemade mix to almost straight wheat. I had birds
that had never even bumped, crashing on landing! :( Out of a 23
bird kit 14 bumped that day, one killed itself when it hit the
loft roof. :( I went back to the mix and they were just fine. My
birds are just finishing their moult, most are almost finished,
a few of the later birds are still ragged but coming along.
Thanks to everyone for their input! :)
Take care my friends
Thom

Thom .. 15 0/0 protien on Wheat is very high and generaly comes
from human consumption Wheat vrs feed Wheat which is `10-12 0/0.
Milo is a very airy seed so the protien is going to be less due
to lack of density compared to Wheat.. Milo will pull weight
fast... both Wheat and Milo will trash quality in time
depending on the temps.. Wheat will sustain them longer

> Hey Scott, I will give the wheat another try ( with caution )
and allow plenty of time for the birds to adjust. I would
however like to ask why you think milo is just a "fill feed"
true it is not as protein rich as wheat but milo at 11.3%
protein/71.3% carb/ 2.9 fat as compared with wheat 15.2%
protein/ 70.9 carb/ 1.8 fat does not seem to be just a filler
but rather another means to fine tune the protein intake. Just
courious. :)

Thanks Scott, That is slightly clearer. My old brain only works
at half speed and it takes a lot to get anything through! :)
I did not mention, I also feed them pellets if I start to worry
about weight. Also I never keep them on any feed regiment for an
extended period.
Tom, I am flying my Jacs. with the Ruby's "sofar" they are
compatable for most of the fly. The Jacs. are a little larger
and depelete their reserves faster. Both the Jacs. and Ruby's
are flying 1 to 1 1/2 hours and working consistently. Next year,
I might try to raise enough pure Jacs. to fly a kit if room is
available. I must keep a small loft or risk not being able to
have birds at all. New neighbors, good people but unknown, so
caution is foremost. I live in the Burbs. but it is closeer then
I would like.
Take care my friends

Hey Paul, here are my comments, will try to keep them brief.
1, 2 & 5: Your fly times are too inconsistent. This may be due
to flying too many unevenly matched birds – age and maturity
wise. They progress at different levels. 1 younger group can
hinder the older groups progress. Separate by flying ability and
feed accordingly.
3: Sounds sufficient.
4: Go with your current ration percentages (benchmark); feed the
older group the same amount per bird. The younger ones should
get more until they are consistently flying the same time as the
older team. When both teams are flying the same time and are
being fed the same type of feed ration and amount per bird, you
can then mix them.
This may or may not impact the roll for a brief time. Do it and
see.

In general it is a good idea to keep notes or a chart to monitor
progress if you are not at a point where you know how to make
adjustments “on the fly”.
Don’t worry about the roll until 6 months or later. Master the
management routine first, trust me, the roll will take care of
itself. When rollers are mature and well conditioned, then you
can mess with the feed and percentages to squeeze out more
action and depth. For now I would build good habits in them and
learn how to fly them. Good luck

Tony
This is a good point and something Ive advocated. Build solid
habits in your youngsters first, at young ages. You cannot force
the development of rolling behaviour. More often you will create
bad habits, by pushing them when they arent ready, that will
eventually de-value the bird/kit. Let them show signs of wanting
to perform first for a several weeks, they will become
comfortable doing it, THEN you can feed for max performance. I
think pigeons must have been accountants in their former lives,
they are comfortable with routine and constancy. Dont allow bad
behaviours to become habitual, it can be very difficult or
impossible to change if becomes established.
Sorry if I hi-jacked, just wanted to add my amen to your
comment.

I am flying a small kit of young rubies, purchased from tony.
They are around 6 mo. old. I'm feeding a commercial mix. I am
brand new at this, and was surprised at the fly times you guys
are talking about, mine are only flying 10 to 15 min. [once
daily in a.m. ] Do I have aproblem?
