Roller Wings

Hey; i was looking through the picture gallery and I notice that
Tony C. took a pic of the rollers wing. And I wanted to know
what the rest of you guys thought about roller wings, and do you
guys think if they had anything to do with the roll.

hay spadewings,
if i read you post and understand what your saying mho i do
believe the wing has to do with the roll they stoke/beat their
wings to roll faster the stoke/beat their wing the faster the
rotation of a bird goes and you got your wing positions of "A"
high "H" "H" high "X" and "X"and the "A" and the high "H" and
"H" is the best ............................donnie james

Hi spadewings, good question. I'd be curious to know if the
length of the wing feathers, difference in length of them in
general, etc seem to affect the roll positively or negatively
in folks experiences. Thaniks paul Conway.

I would like to hear more on this myself from some one who has
noticed a considerable difference. I have not heard much on
wing length as far as the roll is concerned, but I have heard
from other enthusiats that wing length does affect flying in
general; such as longer wings can encourage more soaring in a
bird, rather than continous wing beats.

I guess there's not that much in roller wings since there's not
that many responses.
I myself never looked after wings anyways.

I don't know much about the wings myself but I met and spoke
with Eldon Cheney and he said he breeds for the tips of the
flight feathers to come even with the tip of the tail feathers
he said it improves the roll but I dont know in what way

Absoluty it is an important consideration .. it is what
determines the quality , what it boils down to is the thinner
the primaries and secondaries the better. Thick secondaries
tend to cause too much drag or something and to go hand in hand
with too much feather . More of a slower not so nutted up spin
is the result is my experience, and I can literaly cull off of
the perch due to it. Keep in mind that you have everything in
between also and if one ends in stock due to it's merits then
you want to take into consideration a mate more inline towards
the ideal on primary and secondary along with the other factors
that need to be taken in on choosing a mate.
As for length , I want some length in both the wing and tail as
it gives more balance which translates into a smoother roll ,
some call it cast , but I want it in the feather and not the
back. Let the birds teach you and don't just look at the
rolling, but analize it and be very critical , if the bird
doesn't have the capability to spin flawlesly it is a cull,
keeping in mind they aren't machines and good youngbirds
generaly have to mature into a solid quality from start to
finish roll as confidence builds, in other words I'm talking
about polished birds in proper condition. And when you get a
ringer study the bird in all aspects, both on the ground and in
the hand.

Thanks guys .. I enjoy trying to figure out these sucker .. but
also there are internal factors that we can't see that counter
balance other factors. Then to really have fun take it onto kit
mechanics for the ultimate that the breed has to offer. Learning
and moving your stock forward is a long long process that never
ends. I seem to always feel that I'm just scratching the
surface, Pensom wrote something about it takes 30 yrs at least
to get a grasp on the breed. I understand meaning of that now.
